23.01.2022 Have you or a loved one been finding it difficult to cope as lockdown continues? The Government have recently announced that emergency leave can be requested for permanent aged care residents This means that in the case of an emergency [now] a resident can request leave from an aged care home without losing their social leave entitlements or paying their provider any additional fees to secure their spot. 23.01.2022 With the colder days coming, keeping active becomes more difficult. Keeping our bodies active and healthy [at any age but even more so as we age] is crucial to our overall wellbeing. If you have a loved one who is finding it difficult to keep active, here are some of our favourite ideas: Parking a few streets away and walking when doing errands like heading to the supermarket or pharmacy Speak to a physiotherapist about creating an appropriate exercise routine for your... specific needs Giving the house a tidy keeps us moving Tai Chi or yoga is a great way to practice slow but controlled movements, working different parts of your body Having a purpose or element of fun to exercising can motivate anyone to get their recommended 30 minutes a day, especially with ageing relatives. Lots of activities can be moderated to be low-impact if need be, to cater for any injuries or limitations. Its also a great preventative measure for falls and pain [read more here: https://tinyurl.com/yaldsv8h]. To stay active, I love to head out to the park for a short but energising walk with my family. 23.01.2022 If you are the primary caretaker of someone maintaining a healthy work/life balance can be [even more] difficult than usual. What options are out there to support you? Respite care may be the answer. Respite care is available short-term and allows everyone to be more independent, have some space to relax and alleviate any tension or stress. Its also a great option for planned absences but also available for emergencies. Read more about respite care here agedcareready.com.au/dont-forget-about-yourself-here-are-t/

19.01.2022 Have you started thinking about future care options for your parents or loved ones? Perhaps youve experienced some guilt as a result of this? Looking back on the happy and cherished memories youve shared with them, it can be disheartening to think of spending less time together. Will you be able to maintain the same relationship and enjoy your favourite activities together? Its extremely normal to feel like this and all sorts of other emotions [there is no right way or wro...ng way to feel]. Its the start of a new phase of life. Sometimes, additional care is needed to manage ageing and the social, physical and mental repercussions that are a result. Often I find that while families and individuals are initially reluctant to choose to move to a facility, once they get comfortable, they start to thrive and are able to enjoy things that were off-limits when living at home. Do you need to have a chat about this transition? I am always here to answer any questions you have. Head over to the Aged Care Ready website or give me a call. agedcareready.com.au 1300 023 589

Its so important for everyones emotional health. Its been so nice hearing about these moments and the joy that they bring families. 13.01.2022 As part of the Aged Care Ready team, finding the right home care provider for our clients is a service that we offer. Our clients and their families come to us in this instance because the home care sector is complicated to navigate. Especially if you have to compare numerous providers - like in most cases. Their pricing varies drastically, then on top of that, each provider names their services differently so clients don't actually know what they are comparing. This tool is going to be an amazing resource for families! Home Care Package pricing tool to assist provider transparency requirements https://loom.ly/StdbNG8
13.01.2022 Do you come from a diverse, multicultural background? Do you prefer conversing in a language other than English? There is so much important information being disseminated each and every day at the moment. It can feel extremely overwhelming to consume this in a language you or a loved one may not be most comfortable or confident with. 12.01.2022 No assets, no care for the elderly? This is a question we get asked more often than you may think. What if your parent doesn't have assets that they can sell off to get into an aged care facility. Often the misconception is that if an elderly person doesn't have the money, they don't get the care. But be rest assured, this is not the case. In this clip, I spoke to Financial Planner, Patrick Curlis from Mint Financial about this very scenario. Here's what he had to say:
12.01.2022 Its as good a time as any for some uplifting news This is such a sweet idea repurposing a shipping container to become a portal for safe visits during the pandemic. We love seeing the joy and happiness when loved ones are reunited. While this might not mean a cosy hug, its still great to see families staying connected. How have you been staying connected? Its an extremely difficult time, so have a read of some of our past posts for ideas and resources, or reach out to the team on 1300 023 589
11.01.2022 With many aged care facilities closed to visitors and family members in the high-risk category isolating at home, how can you feel connected to the ones you love? Here are 4 ways to connect, even in isolation. Share a virtual meal : Family dinners may be off the table for a little while, but it doesnt mean you cant break bread virtually. Set a time every week (or even a couple of times a week) to share a virtual meal with your loved one. Bonus points if you organise the... same meal it doesnt get more authentic than that. Send a gift to help them pass the time: Whether its a good book, a puzzle, craft supplies or any other activity, a gift that can keep your loved one busy is a good idea. You could organise a virtual book club or spend some time over the phone while you both do a puzzle Send snail mail: While technology allows us to connect with ease, there is something precious about receiving a letter. Spend some time crafting a note for your loved one. Its a great way to involve young children too! Share a virtual walk: While you might not be able to head on a walk together, grab your phone and share a virtual walk. You will both stay connected and active at the same time Do you have a loved one that you cant see at the moment? If you try any of these ideas, make sure you let us know!
09.01.2022 So youve chosen an aged care facility to send a loved one/ones to, what next? Its important to keep in mind that an aged care facility is their new home. They will be living there under someone elses care and will be spending the majority of time around new people and new environments. This is why ensuring they can still access their favourite pastimes [if able] is essential it positively contributes to their mental health and keeps their brain active. Try out some act...ivities/ programs run by the facility [great for socialising] Continue/ introduce an engaging and fun routine [eg. daily crossword] Regular visits/ calls from family and friends Keeping connected with the community [eg. via the library services] At Aged Care Ready, we dont stop caring for you and your loved ones once they have moved in. We are always here for advice, expert guidance and an open heart & mind!
08.01.2022 During Covid-19, Ive been getting a lot of questions about how to start considering aged care facilities for loved ones. There is *a lot* to consider! Here is a good place to start. Location [Is there more to do nearby? Is it close to a park or the beach? Is it more secluded and quiet? Is it more accessible for loved ones to visit when they wish?] People [Are close friends or loved ones residing in the same home/area? What level of care is provided by staff?] The provi...der [Will this suit your loved ones lifestyle? Have they been reviewed well? Does it utilise your funding package effectively?] Already wondering what is the right match for your loved ones needs? Thats where I can help you navigate this important [but often overwhelming] decision. The team at Aged Care Ready will help to select two to three aged care facility options for your to consider. We do all the heavy lifting so you have all of the right information to make an informed decision. Id love to chat about your loved ones needs today! Give me a call on 1300 023 589.
08.01.2022 Honesty is the best policy! Our ethos is to determine the best care options for the people that means the most to you. We want to fully understand our clients, what makes them unique and what their values are. Our strategy-based advice aims to be practical, offer solutions to the various aged care niches and result in genuine, detailed reports about carers and facilities. 07.01.2022 At Aged Care Ready, we are nurses, which is why we work so well hand in hand with financial planners. It's also the reason why we strongly suggest that all of our clients and family representatives get financial advice from an accredited aged care financial planner. Just like a Financial Planner should never give advice on what facility you should select based on your care needs, we don't give any financial advice. We work with your Financial Planner to negotiate your desire...d outcome with your chosen facility. It's because of questions surrounding means testing and aged care pensions that you need to get this advice. It's so complicated, and if you make a mistake when doing it yourself, Centrelink isn't going to approach you to fix it. So with that being said, how does means testing effect the aged care pension? I had a chat with Financial Planner, Patrick Curlis from Mint Financial to find out.
05.01.2022 How did I negotiate $150,000 off a RAD and saved the client $11,862.50 per year in 5 minutes? Check out the video below! Even when we're not representing a client and acting on their behalf, we educated them on the importance of doing their RESEARCH. There are a number of reasons why we do this:... So that they know what the bed availability is across different facilities What facilities are charging What each facility has in terms of offerings which sets them apart So that they can LEVERAGE this information and NEGOTIATE This is something that we cannot stress enough - YOU have the power to negotiate, despite facilities implying that costs are fixed. Do you need help in this area? Reach out and contact us on 1300 023 589
04.01.2022 Its been great to see families are able to reunite now that restrictions have started to ease. We know Mothers Day was a tough time for a lot of families who were isolated from their elderly loved ones, how beautiful the reunions are! This has to be one of our favourites! We sure have been missing our families in isolation. How has it been for you reuniting with your loved ones? If you have a family member in aged care, how has the facility been at keeping you connected during this time?
04.01.2022 Moments like these are so important. Thats why were rapt that earlier this month, the Government announced a Covid-19 support package for aged care providers. Its aim is to offer more support and care for those that need it the most. Its essential that both patients and workers in these facilities have access to the emotional support they need. The new Industry Code will aim to streamline visiting whilst respecting and protecting the vulnerable. Read more here https://tinyurl.com/y89oac5s
04.01.2022 We would like to take this opportunity to remind our clients and friends that safety precautions regarding Covid-19 are still in place [particularly for those in Melbourne] Social distancing is not always possible if you are providing care, but make sure you wear a mask and wash or sanitise your hands regularly. Always remember if in doubt, stay home. So many of our clients are keeping in touch with their loved ones via video calling, old-fashioned pen pal letters and window visits. Its not easy, but keeping our most vulnerable and at-risk demographic as safe as we can is paramount.

02.01.2022 Placing your ageing loved one into an Aged Care Facility can be an extremely emotional decision. There can be some resistance from the individual moving into care, a differing of opinion within the family and a whole lot of hassle finding *the right* facility. Both emergency and planned placements into a facility can evoke stress, distress and fatigue [just to name a few]. Instead of doing this all on your own, getting a helping hand can make a world of difference. As a reg...istered nurse with 13 years of experience, Ive seen the industry change and evolve significantly. Ive also seen a lot of families struggling to place family members, as well as a lot of loved ones *thrive* when they finally settle into a facility. The Aged Care Ready team can help you understand the ins and outs of funding and financials, how to find the right facility for your loved one's care and lifestyle needs and navigating the transition to a new normal. Dont forget that facilities are still taking placements [with the necessary safety procedures in place] in the current climate. If you would like to talk, give me a call on 0424 039 951.

02.01.2022 Im a big advocate of connecting with the community, both online and in day-to-day life. Creating the Facebook support group has opened a forum for those with ageing parents, especially those experiencing unfamiliar and sometimes overwhelming challenges. There are so many people who are like-minded and going through the same thing. Find the FB group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ageingparentssupport/
01.01.2022 Is the pandemic [or otherwise] making in-person consultations unachievable at the moment? Its no surprise that Covid-19 has thrown a few spanners into the work; its affected relationships within aged care facilities, mental and physical health and the ability to seek services and advice from businesses like ours. Thats why we wanted to remind our lovely clients that we are available via video call. Its not quite as personable as the real thing, but we didnt want our clie...nts to transition into aged care unsupported. For more information, please chat with the wonderful Aged Care Ready team.
