17.01.2022 Kurnell Village Fair 2019 Where on earth is Kurnell I hear you say? When travelling around Australia back in 2010 we got that a lot! We had lived in Kurnell for a while then and we knew the history well but not many people knew it’s story. Captain Cook landed here back on the 29 April 1770 in his Endeavour with a bunch of convicts and keen settlers aboard The First Fleet. He was confronted by Aboriginals and it got ugly and although the story was not a very nice one, the mod...ern day residents of Kurnell like to commemorate, remember, reflect and celebrate this special day together as one, the meeting place of two cultures. This festival has been successfully run for over 22 years and I was asked to rejig the logo for the Kurnell Village Fair next month. The committee wanted an identity to reflect the meeting that took place back in 1770 but also pay tribute to its Indigenous significance. It was a hard ask as a busy logo often risks looking like a school project but using traditional Aboriginal symbols I think you get the picture. I wasn’t paid for this #communityserviceproject but I LOVED researching the history of our beginnings and couldn’t help feeling bitter sweet learning what happened to the naughty Lieutenant in Hawaii. Serves him right for being such a rude visitor! Whether you believe he was eaten by Hawaiians or not, it’s a great read and even a great story for the kids to learn about. 2020 is a big one for our little seaside town as it marks the 250th anniversary but until then - See you all this year - Sunday 28th April 2019 9am - 4pm for food, rides, entertainment.
