25.01.2022 When it comes to a good cake, the proof is always in the cut, according to local champion show baker and judge Jean Biggins. The Naracoorte local won first prize for her fruit cake at the Royal Adelaide Show in 2016 and 2017, and has judged the prestigious state competition and local shows. Her friend, fellow competitor, and Naracoorte Show cookery convenor Rosemary Miller said the pair have lost count of the number of shows they have entered over the decades.... Despite the friendly competition, Mrs Miller said she had learnt a lot from Mrs Biggins, who also runs baking demonstrations at shows, and school workshops. Pick up your copy of this week’s issue of The News and turn to page 13 for their baking secrets and the full story.

Pony Club president Amanda Shrive welcomed the funds and said there was always some club upgrade to be done. ... 11.01.2022 The local firefighters’ museum recently received a free solar panel system valued at $15,000 from a power company. Enerven’s former general manager Rob Snowden suggested the SA power subsidiary donate the system because of his heavy involvement in the CFS Foundation. South Australia Volunteer FireFighters Museum chairman Rex Hall presented a certificate of appreciation to Enerven commercial solar manager Rodney Kiddy and thanked him on behalf of the museum. ... Mr Hall said the kind donation would help the museum manage its finances. We’ve got an ongoing program of expenses and with the facility not being able to open regularly with COVID-19, it is limited to our own funding, he said. It’s certainly a great asset. Pick up your copy of this week's newspaper, and turn to page 8 for the full story.

08.01.2022 Bordertown local, Don Vanstone, has spent a decade adding to his collection of more than 3000 souvenir teaspoons A retired farmer from Pine Hill, the Tatiara Retirement Village resident began his collection after he acquired one-hundred spoons from his sister Coral, following her passing. I suddenly got hooked on it, Mr Vanstone said. It sort of just took off.... The walls of the 84-year old’s home are laden with the shiny trinkets, all of which are displayed in wooden cabinets Mr Vanstone crafted himself. The spoons have been meticulously sorted so that each cabinet represents a theme or origin. These include cabinets of spoons filled with Australian landmarks, members of the royal family, spoons from New Zealand, USA, European countries, Australian animals, left-handed spoons, miniature spoons, and an entire cabinet of Ned Kelly souvenir spoons, just to name a few. Turn to page 5 of this week's issue of The News for the full story:

08.01.2022 Naracoorte Mill Quilters and Naracoorte and District Basketball Association (NDBA) are the latest recipients of funds through The News’ Give Back program. The groups have each received $610, bringing the sum total of donations to local organisations to more than $37,000. Naracoorte Mill Quilters secretary Louise O’Shaughnessy said the donation would fund new materials to sew charity quilts for the community. '... "We make lap quilts for Longridge Aged Care and ‘quilts of love’ for the Naracoorte Hospital, Mrs O’Shaughnessy said. "Each new baby born is offered a small quilt that's designed to go in their capsule in the car or in their pram." Last month the group made 70 ‘quilts of love’ for babies born at the facility using MiniJumbuk wool wadding and 100 per cent cotton. Mrs O’Shaughnessy said the donation would also help subsidise an upcoming skills workshop for group members. She welcomed anyone interested to join the group. "We have people as young as 30 right through to 80 years olds, and it's amazing how we all can get together and share our skills and ideas," Mrs O’Shaughnessy said. The group meets on the second Monday of every month at the Naracoorte Presbyterian Church from 9.30am. NDBA president Paul McRostie said The News’ donation would help fund the upkeep and replacement of uniforms, and the purchase of a new score clock. The association hires the Naracoorte High School and the Naracoorte South Primary School stadiums for its annual junior squad carnival in February. We're looking at purchasing two portable score clocks for those two stadiums when we have that carnival each year, which cost about $1200 each, Mr McRostie said. For the next month, you will see our Give Back double to more than $1,200 in total each week. 25 cents from the sale of every copy of The News, plus the generosity of a friend of The News who is matching the Give Back donations for the next $10,000, makes this possible.
