23.01.2022 Happy Monday to everyone! Keep a keen eye out over the coming weeks for some interesting posts from the team! #healthpromotion

23.01.2022 **FIRST POST IN THE SERIES** "MRI Results: Best taken with a pinch of Salt *(Bae)." A study from 2015 where people without back pain had an MRI produced astounding results. Disk degeneration (usual wear and tear) was found in over a third of us at the age of 20, whilst at 40, expect 68% of us to also have wear and tear, and 50% to have disk bulging in the lower back region.... All these individuals had no symptoms despite the findings reported on their MRI. As MRI’s get better and better, they are able to pick up more and more subtle differences that may or may not be contributing to functional disability. So next time when interpreting results of MRI’s, or thinking of getting an MRI through referral from your GP, consider most of us will have some wear and tear after we hit 20 years of age. Many imaging-based wear and tear findings are likely part of normal againg and unassociated with pain. (Brinjikji, W et al. 2015). You can access the online study for free here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4464797/ #healthpromotion

18.01.2022 **CONTINENCE IS IMPORTANT** Running with the theme of ante-natal classes earlier this week, let’s talk continence! Continence is the ability for you to control your bladder and bowel for urine or faecal movement, in urgency for toileting. Commonly understood to be an issue for women during or post-pregnancy, it is an issue which males may also experience.... The pelvic floor has a lot to do with it. These are series of 6 muscles which sit within the bottom of the pelvis to hold the abdominal continents in like a hammock. Risk factors such as age, increased weight, high impact exercise, heavy lifting or chronic coughing may make an individual prone to having weaker pelvic floor muscles, thus incontinent. Not only do the muscles have a role in continence but also sexual health and dysfunction. Much like the rest of the muscles in the body, these muscles have the ability to be strengthened. The Continence Foundation of Australia have a fantastic website, providing relevant information to this matter, accessed here: https://www.continence.org.au/. If you, or someone you know may benefit from a consult, gives us a ring and make an appointment. PH: (08) 8762 8130

11.01.2022 **EXERCISE** We know it’s good for us. It helps to maintain a healthy weight, build and maintain healthy bones, keep our heart strong, reduce stress the list goes on and on! Concentrating specifically on the management of diabetes, exercise has been proven to share additional benefits.... Insulin is one of the key hormones that regulates our blood glucose level. In type 2 diabetes insulin is produced less and is less effective in keeping our blood sugar levels in check. During exercise, our muscles use up glucose for energy. Exercise also has been shown to improve the sensitivity of insulin, enabling the hormone to better lower our blood glucose level, which a key factor in the overall management of diabetes. Come into the clinic today for information and assistance in getting the right exercise and check out the Diabetes Australia webpage for more details and helpful tips in managing diabetes. https://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/ #healthpromotion

Sadly our new physio has had a slightly delayed start date, which has meant a delay in the start of our 2019 classes. 05.01.2022 **ANTE-NATAL CLASS** "a relaxed atmosphere where you can gain helpful information... and have time for a friendly open discussion". Naracoorte Physiotherapy Clinic's Emma Schultz will be at the class tomorrow night to answer some of your questions. The class starts at 6:30pm, hope to see you there!

05.01.2022 Dear Naracoorte Physio Clinic community, With the rapid progression of events surrounding COVID-19 over the past two weeks, we would like to outline how we will proceed in our clinic over the coming weeks. We are no longer providing face to face consults at the clinic but we are preparing an exciting new option of online physiotherapy to begin on Monday April 6th, often referred to as Telehealth.... Telehealth uses video conference calling that you can access via your smartphone or computer, or for those who find technology more challenging we can provide telephone consults. The appointment proceeds just like a face to face visit, as we go through your medical history and history of your complaint, and for those that have access to video calls, a visual assessment of your condition through movements and tests that we guide you through. The information gathered will help us determine the best course of action for your condition, after which we can provide you with an individualised treatment plan including education and an exercise program, all done in the safety of your own home. This method of treatment has been used with great success for a number of years to service remote communities and has been shown to be effective in the treatment of a wide range of conditions. At the present time, Return to Work SA, NDIS and Medicare EPC are all providing rebates for this service. Some Private Health Insurance companies will provide rebates starting Tuesday April 14th. The service will be charged at $40 for an initial consult. We understand this is a major change for us all from the usual physiotherapy experience but we are excited to be able to help you during this ever changing time! If this is something you would be interested in or just want to chat to us about how it would work, please don’t hesitate to call us. Phone and leave us your details and we will get back to you within 24 hours to make an appointment time or just answer some of your questions. Warm Regards, Kate, Emma and Melanie Phone 08 87628130
