25.01.2022 Today's "go to" math resource is from 'math is fun'. This webpage builds upon concepts based on the assumption that you or child know where the sticking point is. Often in Math - students are frustrated because they can't make a link forward in their understanding. This happens when fundamental rules are missed in the lower years. As parents, teachers and tutors it's our role to ensure that students are able to move into Vygotsky's zone of proximal development by recognising ...the gap in a students learning. Enough talk for now - here's today's "go to" for an alternate mode of looking at math concepts and helping to identify to the gap. Happy studying, Michael. https://www.mathsisfun.com/

23.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Over the coming weeks, I'll be putting some information up that might be of use to those of you who are; 1) Doing home readers with your children and/or; 2) are looking more deeply at your own reading skills.... The first (of 12 tips) I'm looking at is 'Author's Purpose'. Quiz your kids (or yourself) while reading, about the type of text you're looking at. Ask yourself (or your children) "Is the book; Persuasive? (trying to change your mind or make you act on some thought) Informative? (facts about something) Entertaining? (a story) Explanation? (steps in a DIY home project) or Description? (Looks like, feels like, sounds like)." How and why is this important for your kids? Knowing which category (or which categories) your book falls into can help form questions and predictions as well as preposition yourself for the type of information your about to engage in - say - for an essay :) Quiz your kids about the front and back covers, the word choice the Author used as well as the pictures (separate and together with the text) and see what message they initially convey. Reading is a very individual yet active (contrary to popular belief) thing to engage in and starts with the book covers to determine the author's purpose. That's it for this week, as always "happy learning", Kind regards, Michael.

22.01.2022 Hi everyone, This great article deserves some time to read (~5min) to prepare yourself and your kids as they return to school. Being a parent myself - being a lighthouse for your childs friends really resonates with me, the article explains why.... Enjoy the last few days of break before returning to school Regards, Michael. (Learning, always learning). https://www.maggiedent.com//surviving-first-week-high-sc/

21.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Today's focus is on recall of facts and details. Why? Why is this important to readers (or watchers of films)? When looking at a paragraph, facts and details are the elaborations, explanations, evidence and examples. Notice in particular that all these 'e's within the paragraph, form part of the "T.E.E.L" paragraph structure. Worthwhile remembering if you are writing your own paragraphs.... This information provides depth on the authors purpose, depending on if it's a persuasive, informative, entertaining or descriptive piece. What do we do with this information? As readers we create links to information previously read and form our pictures, opinions and understandings. Note - this also factors in personal experiences, filters and perceptions. This in turn sets up deeper understanding about author purpose but also to start making predictions about the text that follows. If you're working with young readers, question them about what happened in the paragraph/chapter just read. If you're really adventurous, use a graphic organizer and have your child write. You might be surprised at the answers you get ;) Until next week, happy learning! Kind regards, Michael.

21.01.2022 Good morning everyone, Todays site is for the advanced guys and girls who are working with calculus and trigonometry etc. Without a doubt - the biggest sticking point for calculus is found when students ask the question "how did you get from here, to there?" Often, its the same sticking point (or gap in learning) that could be found in earlier in concepts. This gap is almost always the assumed knowledge a student should possess, to feel confident moving forward in calcu...lus. In the meantime - todays site symbolab opens up each step, right back to basics to show the steps and processes used. Happy studying Michael. https://www.symbolab.com

21.01.2022 Hi everyone, I'm not saying this is a bad way to approach math, (it is cute) I'm just saying that I can help with the approach. Enjoy the humour And happy studies,... Michael. https://www.facebook.com/bonnykins/posts/10156930033913222

21.01.2022 Hi everyone, One of the consistent things Ive come across in study is my universitys insistence that we (as pre-service teachers) know and understand the teaching standards that AITSL have. The first standard sums up so much; know students, and how they learn. To me, Bill Rogers - a prominent author and master in the field of behaviours and consultant in Australia and overseas, always seems to come back to this point - knowing your students (oh, but he has so much more ...too!) So - when we remember our students... our kids, are still little people that need guidance and we take the time to get to know them, we take a massive step in educating - not only them, but us. Build the relationship - as a parent, tutor, teacher! It makes the world of difference and is a pre-cursor to learning in positive ways. Happy learning, Michael. (P.s. no I dont get kick backs - I just look for stuff that works to help kids learn gooder)

21.01.2022 Hi everyone, This morning I'm putting the last of my favourite math go to sites. This site is wonderful for all ages and is quite concise with terminology and multiple ways to view math concepts and problems. Math antics meets student engagement with colour, diagrams and explanations during the video tutorials, linking concepts from other areas of math to get the "ah-ha" effect. Enjoy this free to use site ... Happy learning, Michael. https://www.mathantics.com

20.01.2022 Dear fellow procrastinators, This is worth a watch - if you are procrastinating. Alternatively, I can help you with time management problems Happy learning, Michael.... https://www.facebook.com/29092950651/posts/10161825123280652?sfns=mo

20.01.2022 Hi everyone, This weeks reading/writing strategy is on sequencing. By the end, Im sure you will see how sequencing is linked with remembering details and facts from last week and that its a foundation skill (in cognitive terms) when reading and recounting books. Sequencing while reading and writing helps make sense of and recount stories, instructions, historical events (etc) usually in a chronological order but not always. Lets face it, its embarrassing when you do a... recount and forget the actual sequence. I liken it to our little people trying to tell a joke but getting it horribly wrong. It simply doesnt make sense and the joke is often on the person telling it not a great self-esteem builder. The types of words used for sequencing include; first, next, then, last, finally, before and after. Youre probably thinking to yourself, actually its not all that difficult. Youre right, this type of thinking (recall/sequencing) sits low when we look at cognitive function and compare it to any of the taxonomies in learning/teaching. Its important to get it right though. This is a springboard that moves into higher order thinking skills (more on this in the coming weeks) for writing of all types and is clearly important at a social level. If youre a parent doing reading with your kids, ask questions that challenge them to recall the exact order of events; what happened first, Then what happened?, Wait, didnt happen first. You get the point P.S. Yes questioning is, in itself a craft. Well look at that another week though. As usual, Happy Learning (learning, always learning) Kind regards, Michael.

20.01.2022 This is where great teachers, tutors and TAs add depth and engagement- by asking the right questions to develop independence. Moral - ask questions that confirm understanding and give direction on how to approach the problem. Dont give the answer. This is part of problem solving.... Cheers, Michael.

20.01.2022 Hi everyone, Well, Christmas is but days away which means hot cross buns will be available within the next two weeks! Most of you are already considering 2018 goals and considering how to prepare your kids after looking at report cards and remembering conversations with teachers last year.... Why not consider; 1) purchase of a "mental math" book from your local newsagent (Narangba Valley news has these). Invest 10min a day with your child to prep for this coming year. 2) watch one or two videos from November that were posted or, 3) consider a tutor to provide targeted math work, covering the gaps your student came across in the year. Whatever your decision, enjoy your break, have a safe and merry Christmas a prosperous new year and as always, happy learning! Regards, Michael.

19.01.2022 It's been a few weeks since I wrote about helping your kids to engage with texts. This week's about recognizing cause and effect within a text. In simple texts, look for the word 'because'. ... The tricky part for students is to create the link in text. You might have to scaffold for them by asking the question 'why did that (some event) happen?', then give a sentence starter and prompt with the word 'because'. This key idea is central in comprehension. Cause and effect provides logic in a sequence and helps make sense of events (or not - for example; texts that may be psychological in nature and we may not have any reference point, a discussion for another time). While I've not gone into great detail in this post about cause and effect, we do this everyday in life. We 'suppose' and we 'reason' why things occur to us or others. So - what to take away from today? Ask 'why', prompt with 'because'. You might have to provide an example to begin. That way your child/student can make links in the text in a logical way. In this fashion and with practice, they are engaging deeper with their reading. Happy learning Everyone!!! Michael.

18.01.2022 Welcome back to school everyone! I really like the message in the photograph because it gives us one important message. Over the next week or so, big changes are afoot as we (and our kids) get back into the learning/study routine. So, Ill post an example of how I get on top of my study and put forward some ideas you might like try to encourage/set routines and goals - in the meantime...... Priorities - worthwhile putting the word up on the fridge as a reminder to self. As always- happy learning Michael.

17.01.2022 Welcome back to school everyone! First week (establishment week) where teachers are setting boundaries that make classrooms safe, welcoming places to be! This week I worked with students in our sessions using dominoes and cards (I.e. Just a good old pack of cards) to play multiplication wars and addition competitions amongst other teaching techniques.... All the techniques I use; teach students process and problem solving, then we add speed with loads of fun. You can get creative, learning games for your kids on the net (just google what skills theyre working on, or check out Pinterest). In the mean time - happy learning, Michael

16.01.2022 I love it when parents support those in the teaching profession. We really appreciate those of you who are parents and do your best to help us, help your children Michael.

16.01.2022 Hi everyone, Well new year came and went and wouldnt you know it, its one week before our kids are back at school ("thank god" some say). These days kids are taught math concepts in way that makes them think deeply to understand the application. What is sometimes skipped is the basics - simple multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. You can bridge this gap by purchasing (or print off the Internet) flash cards. ... The big retailers have them for around $3 to $4 a pack. Invest 2-5min a day, even every second day, with you kids (or motivate them to work independently) doing these, and keep them on track - learning the concepts they should be focusing on rather than wasting time with the easy stuff Best wishes for the year and as usual - happy learning! Michael.

16.01.2022 Hi everyone, While teachers can’t formally diagnose learning difficulties and/or mental health conditions, it helps when we can identify triggers and behaviours typically displayed by students that may affect a students ability to learn. The picture/infographic has some handy identifiers for ADHD, but we (the teachers, parents and tutors) have to be able to show, lesson after lesson, day after day and month after month to our students that we believe in them, care about them ...and let them know they can accomplish academic and social/emotion goals Be patient while you learn with your kids and don’t forget to be patient with yourself in the process. We learn from each other. Happy learning, Michael.

15.01.2022 Well now Everyone, Its been a few months since I posted. Im not sure about you - but Im flat out! (I love learning!!!!) Today Im posting a weblink for those of you working on Algebra and wanting to link equations (which can be abstract, i.e. youre thinking "what does this even look like?" and "why am I doing this?") to a graphical representation. ... This web page allows you to put in an equation so that you can view the possible solutions for y when inserting an independent variable x. All you do, is enter the equation. Specifically, this (free) software allows you to make sense of linear and non-linear (quadratic and high degree polynomials) that relate to real life concepts such as; trajectory and height of a ball/projectile as well as business and area optimization to name a few. Remember though, this doesnt solve your problem/work - it will just help make sense of it. As usual, happy learning :) Kind regards, Michael. https://www.geogebra.org/graphing

15.01.2022 Hi everyone! Math website number three in my "go to" series that might help your child (or even you) out.. This guy is phenomenal with regard to the amount information and videos hes posted on youtube and his own webpage. Sal Khan has hundreds of videos that might assist you in finding the missing piece of the math puzzle (otherwise, you can call a tutor). Check Sal out here;... https://www.khanacademy.org Happy learning! Cheers, Michael.

13.01.2022 Whos story is similar to this young gentleman? More to the point - if youre an adult learner, are you rewriting your script, or is someone still writing your script for you? Please consider.... Learning - always learning, Michael.

11.01.2022 Good morning everyone, A short video on 0 and why we cant divide and multiply with it. Enjoy the video (if not, the first section), as we get an explanation of the why. Happy Learning ... Regards, Michael. https://www.facebook.com/TED/videos/2004380972908432/

11.01.2022 Hi Everybody, No doubt everybody is settled back in school. It's interesting to note that most of my students (across schools that I tutor) and in class rooms that I work, are all doing fractions. I'm getting a very strong feeling that all schools are moving toward the implementation of revised curriculum in (public) schools. To help our people in school and home with fractions I'm posting two links. On this webpage < https://www.mathsisfun.com/fractions.html > you can set t...he denominator to different values and see how this represents 'parts of the whole'. You can also change the numerator values to express how many of those parts you 'actually have'. The web-page also progresses onto activity/exercises to cement learning. The second link < https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CA9XLJpQp3c > has a video explanation of fractions. This is in a lecture format which is good for visual/audio learners providing the chance to pause and review. Both are great resources that I have used and seen used by other math Teachers in class. Happy learning! Michael.

10.01.2022 Hi Everyone, I came this really interesting and informative TedX video on social media and how it affects our lives. Take a look, share it, its worth it as a reminder to "unplug" for a while, particularly for our young people. Enjoy ;) ... Michael. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Czg_9C7gw0o

10.01.2022 And now for something completely different - Im to see the proof in the pudding, but Ill certainly be researching and talking to the Teachers I work with about this interesting method to ground and calm students. Im the mean time - new year resolutions are fine, just remember every day you wake up, you have a choice - so make everyday worth it, and the days that arent, make the following day worth it. (Its a mental attitude - "choose"). Best wishes for a healthy, prosper...ous new year everyone and happy learning! Regards, Michael.

07.01.2022 Hi everyone, A few weeks back I spoke about how I plan when it comes to study. Well, semester 1 has just kicked off (for those returning to Uni), so rather than make something up, or refer you to another page, I thought Id show you exactly what I do, from the start of semester. Im going to periodically add photos to show how I approach study as I go on as well What you will notice 1st up - and every time I begin study is the box plan, with a time limit of 2-5 mins. ... Planning is super important so you know what you want to have achieved (using SMART goals - Ill do those another time) by the end of session. I put 2-5min so I have a defined time limit and reduces the need to check Facebook. I also put a check box to tick - this gives me an easy win and encourages me to look to the next activity. Yes - even easy wins feel good as you get into your study - and starting is nearly always the most challenging part for people. Summary - Plan your study session. It might be only 10 min Math revision, or 15 review English assignment criteria - but plan for a couple of minutes. Give yourself a reward after youve completed a session too! Nothing fatty though More soon, Michael. Learning, always learning

07.01.2022 And now for something completely different - I'm to see the proof in the pudding, but I'll certainly be researching and talking to the Teachers I work with about this interesting method to ground and calm students. 06.01.2022 Hi Everyone, This quick video discusses the but, Im no good at math, idea and puts a few misconceptions to bed. I think the main point I took is the mention of practice. Now, Ill concede that if you dont get it, this your learning opportunity and where you need to ask for help to make the connections so that you do get it . Thats where parents, peers, tutors and Teachers pitch in.... Math, like all your learning - should be relevant to help you make more sense of the world and have deeper connection/appreciation of it. Enjoy the video and dont forget - practice. There is no substitute for pen on paper. Even if its just 10minutes a day. Just 10 minutes a day! As always; Happy learning, Michael. https://www.facebook.com/ScienceNaturePage/videos/377833866329165/

06.01.2022 Hi Everyone, This is a quick video that helps explain the difference between simple, compound and complex sentences. The images are a basic and comical but, they step up into terms like relative pro-nouns, very quickly. What to do with the video; 1) Watch it < https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98OcAe5O0Ws >... 2) Ask your kids what type of sentence they just made. 3) Ask why they thought that; use of conjunctions i.e. FANBOYS , independent and dependent clauses. 4) Link this to the past few weeks of facts, details, author message that Ive posted (and celebrate if you get this far ) Then, enjoy the rest of the weekend. Happy learning, Michael.

05.01.2022 Hello Everybody, Time for quick intermission... For those of you writing essays at the moment and you forgot how to - here is a neat little set out for you use in planning and drafting; https://actuallyadhd.tumblr.com//slide-1-how-to-write-a-ki ... Its basic, it works, its what I do. If you need to do references/bibliography, remember to do that as you go! Thats it for now - Happy Learning, Michael.

05.01.2022 Having problems with shapes and geometry in general? Call me to avoid these sort of problems later in life...

04.01.2022 Hi Everybody, Its been a few months since Ive posted largely due to work/study (life) commitments but its time to start looking forward into the new year. Before we do, as a parent and pre-service Teacher its really important to acknowledge our kids. So;... Congratulations to all my students in the 2018 year! You have lifted the bar and proved to yourself that "you can do it" - you are able to "get it" and in fact - your parents have seen through your grades that this is true. "You are amazing young people and Ive seen incredible growth throughout the year! Great work in 2018". This isnt just academic - more importantly, its your kids self confidence. No surprise - this is backed by research. So keep encouraging your kids and ask them questions that cause them to think "deeply" about an issue/learning topic. Now to 2019; This year I continue tutoring and posting articles, hints and tips to help you improve approaches to learning and teaching your kids. For now, heres a neat little graphic explaining synonym, antonym, homonyms that I found a few days ago. Handy as a print out to keep in a study folder; https://examples.yourdictionary.com/examples-of-homonyms.ht To that end, I hope everyone has had an relaxing and safe break to this point and that it continues on into 2019. Best wishes and happy learning into 2019! Michael. Learning, always learning :)

02.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Over the coming days Ill post some of my favourite "go to sites" to help students engage in Math. These are (mostly) free and have different methods to engage different styles of learning. The first site is dadsworksheets.com. This handy site has loads of worksheets to review and "cement" ideas learnt in the classroom. As you know, most math problems sit at the lower end Blooms taxonomy. That is, once you work out the question, its about applying rules that b...uild on previous knowledge and then, dare I say it - repetition. Interestingly, Robert Marzano states that around 27 exposures are needed to achieve true mastery of a subject. Happy Learning everyone! Cheers, Michael. https://www.dadsworksheets.com/

02.01.2022 Well now Everyone, It's been a few months since I posted. I'm not sure about you - but I'm flat out! (I love learning!!!!) Today I'm posting a weblink for those of you working on Algebra and wanting to link equations (which can be abstract, i.e. you're thinking "what does this even look like?" and "why am I doing this?") to a graphical representation. ... This web page allows you to put in an equation so that you can view the possible solutions for 'y' when inserting an independent variable 'x'. All you do, is enter the equation. Specifically, this (free) software allows you to make sense of linear and non-linear (quadratic and high degree polynomials) that relate to real life concepts such as; trajectory and height of a ball/projectile as well as business and area optimization to name a few. Remember though, this doesn't solve your problem/work - it will just help make sense of it. As usual, happy learning :) Kind regards, Michael. https://www.geogebra.org/graphing

02.01.2022 Hi everyone, Im not saying this is a bad way to approach math, (it is cute) Im just saying that I can help with the approach. Enjoy the humour And happy studies,... Michael. https://www.facebook.com/bonnykins/posts/10156930033913222

01.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Over the coming days I'll post some of my favourite "go to sites" to help students engage in Math. These are (mostly) free and have different methods to engage different styles of learning. The first site is dadsworksheets.com. This handy site has loads of worksheets to review and "cement" ideas learnt in the classroom. As you know, most math problems sit at the lower end Bloom's taxonomy. That is, once you work out the question, it's about applying rules that b...uild on previous knowledge and then, dare I say it - repetition. Interestingly, Robert Marzano states that around 27 exposures are needed to achieve true mastery of a subject. Happy Learning everyone! Cheers, Michael. https://www.dadsworksheets.com/
