06.01.2022 Bart Sbeghen, Co-founder, Dr Crankys It started under the peppercorn tree at Flemington Primary School. I was helping another parent, Peter Hormann, with Ride ...to School day and I noticed that a lot of the bikes were unroadworthy. A wheel was loose, the brakes didnt workso I was trying to fix them so at least they werent unsafe. But there were also a lot of kids who didnt have bikes at all, so we thought, why dont we recycle bikes for kids who need them? We started fixing up donated bikes and in 2014 we moved into the shed and established the Bike Hospital. Since then, at Flemington weve recycled and repaired over a thousand bikes. I saw the effect it was having at Flemington, so I did my research and I found there were a quarter of a million kids in Australia without access to a bike. We started up at St Kilda Primary and Albert Park and saw the same result: kids who got bikes rode them a lot. It becomes a habit, and if you establish that habit of regular exercise as a child youre more likely to be physically and mentally healthy as an adult. We were clearly doing something that worked, so I incorporated Dr Cranky as a registered charity and now were at 15 schools around Melbourne and one in Darwin. Weve just had a grant from VicHealth to expand to another 16 schools, so well be at 30 schools around Melbourne and regional Victoria. But we wouldnt have got off the ground without the local support: not just donations of bikes and money, but also support from Bendigo Bank, Flemington Cycles and other local businesses. So far, weve given away 2,000 bikes. For the kids who receive them, its freedom. Its transformative: they have the independence to get around, but its also saving the family money because the kids are not taking the bus. If you can save $20 a week thats a huge difference to some families. For me personally, its brought me into contact with a lot of people I wouldnt have met. I was doing it to get people riding, but the most valuable thing has been the connection. At Flemington, the local African communities, who I didnt really know at all, have really embraced it. But you see it at all the schools we operate in: the transfer of knowledge and skills is important, but the connections made strengthen the whole community. COVID has hit us hard we havent been able to operate the bicycle hospital. Ive tried to continue helping people get riding by making YouTube videos on common bike fixes, and Ive helped people find bikes through Good Karma Network. But were really looking forward to getting back to schools, we need that connection. The positive of the lockdown is the number of people and families getting out to ride bikes. Its like being in the 70s again. People have discovered what it can do for your physical and mental wellbeing. Hopefully, the joy of being able to get out for a ride or a walk and not be rushing around to and from work and activities reminds families of the importance of spending time together. We need donations of cash and bikes, but we also really need people who are willing to get involved at their local school. Thats where we make a real impact.
