25.01.2022 Sorry all, my estimation was way out. This fish actually weighed 26.1kg.

24.01.2022 Water temperature is hovering in the 17.5c to 18.5c range at Montague Island, with a very slight current from the North. That's the good news, the bad news is that the nice blue water has been replaced with water of a pale green colour. The water variations didn't seem to bother the fish too much today, although our catch of snapper was down compared with recent trips - morwong and other fish were certainly ready to take a bait. FYI, the ugly red fish in the photo are Red Rock Cod (Eastern Red Scorpionfish), and they are an excellent eating fish which has long been under valued my many fishers. My personal recommendation is to fillet them and fry the flesh, but be careful of the spikes, as each one will give you 5 hours of pain.

23.01.2022 Just been informed by NSW DPI (Fisheries) that charter boat fishing is deemed as 'essential'. This means that the social distancing regulations ( that is one person per 4 square meters, under Covid 19 restrictions) no longer apply to charter boat fishing. Our limits for customer numbers have now been increased to a maximum of 7 for each trip. We will continue to offer face masks and hand sanitiser to anyone wishing to use them.... Our gear and surfaces will also continue to be cleaned as per Covid 19 guidelines. Happy Fishing everyone.

23.01.2022 A slow start this morning with a few just over legal kings, then chaos broke loose with the arrival of a massive school of 80+cm kings taking everything that was put in front of them. Narooma local Jesse got an early birthday present from his Dad - a fishing trip with us. Jesse landed a nice 67cm king, and thought he was doing OK, then the bigger fish arrived and the 88cm specimen pictured was only one of the many. It seems that the Montague Island kings are going back to normal - having a bite before a southerly change, which arrives tomorrow.

21.01.2022 The Montague Island 2020-21 Kingfish season officially started for us today, with Jacko from Mildura landing this 67cm king on squid this morning. Before anyone gets their knickers in a twist, the photo is not a fair representation of the size of this fish. The angle of the fish was wrong, and distorted (much like 2020 - so far), and it was definitely 67cm. Water temp was 16.3 on the West side of the Island, and 17.4 on the East side. There was a slight, but increasing current from the North.

20.01.2022 Sue from Canberra got her first legal kingfish this morning, the best being 93cm (and fat as butter), which was pretty impressive as it came out of 23mts of water. This morning's kings had a real taste for slimy mackerel, and they much preferred them to the yakkas.

18.01.2022 Today's customers weren't really interested in catching kingfish, their target was snapper. We still managed to sneak in a few kingfish, and got some very nice snapper as well. Today's kings were a totally different school to the big ones we have been getting. These were 66 -71cm, and most were taken on strips of frozen (yes frozen!!) bonito. The snapper had a particular liking for squid strips. While today's customers were happy with the fish, I was particularly happy fo...r the excellent Lebanese food they bought along - Thanks Kaz & Crew. It will be interesting if we can get out again tomorrow morning, as there is a strong change forecast. Lately strong change equals good kingfish. See more

16.01.2022 Today, 12 year old Luka from Wollongong took out our 'Fish Of The Day' with this nice 94cm kingfish. Luka's king fell to a live bait at the Southern Pinnacle which is south of Montague Island. We hooked a very big king on a stick bait, which unfortunately was taken by a hungry big Bronze Whaler shark - stick bait and all.

15.01.2022 Our run of good luck on the kingfish continues, we have only had one trip without kingfish since late March. Today's current was trickling from the North, and after a slow start the kings came on the bite about an hour before the high tide. Water temp is still over 20c and clarity is improving.

15.01.2022 Our first trip back after the 'issues'. We travelled North to the reefs East of Tuross Heads, the fishing wasn't exactly memorable, but managed a decent box of snapper, morwong, nannygai, perch, pigfish and flathead. The most unusual fish of the day was this nice silver trevally caught on a Montague Jigs 'Snapper Snatcher', by Jock from Wagga Wagga. 'Fishing Tip', silver trevally are excellent eaten raw. The key is to bleed the fish on capture, and straight onto ice.

14.01.2022 My last month's charter fishing started with a nice run of kings this morning. With 3 fat fish in the 90's. The remaining kings were mostly only in the high 60's. The water temp is still over 20c, and there was a small trickle of current from the South early, unfortunately it stopped mid morning.

13.01.2022 We took the gamble and went out to Montague Island this morning, despite the fact that there was no current. Fortunately it paid off going to the Island, with very average reports coming from the Tuross reefs. Sherrie and Mark from Albury, as well as Emma and Evan from Canberra, had a nice session with plenty of snapper and morwong on the Eastern side of the Island in perfect weather.... I am reasonable at cleaning fish, but this table full took me quite a while - but no spikes or cut fingers, so I have to be happy. Will be glad when I can take out enough customers that I can employ a deckhand again.

13.01.2022 After a morning catching undersize kings, and there were heaps of them, we had a rare afternoon trip today - and ended up with 13 legal kings and a couple of nice snapper. It isn't often that afternoon trips are more productive than morning trips, but today was the exception. John from Wagga even got a double header of legals on a pater noster rig on squid. He forgot to do his hair for the photo. It will be interesting to see what tomorrow brings.

12.01.2022 Certainly a mixed bag today. Only thing missing was a feed of flathead - maybe tomorrow.

10.01.2022 We have entered that time of year when we have to decide whether to go to Montague Island or head North to the reefs off Tuross Head. Today the decision was easy, with no current to excite the kingfish, we headed North to chase snapper. Having my youngest daughter Sarah and her husband Scott, along with Rob from Sydney and Gary from Melbourne on board, first up we were pestered by Chinaman Leatherjackets and mackerel in shallow water. Then we found the snapper (up to 3kg) in ...the 60 metre range, along with some very nice pigfish. A few days off now, then we have to decide again, snapper or kingfish - such a hard choice. ** Legal flathead remain elusive. Looks good for next year, with plenty of undersize flattys everywhere.

10.01.2022 I haven't posted for a couple of weeks, the photo explains the reason why! At first I thought a noticeable shudder in the boat was a failing uni-joint, unfortunately it was only the tip of the iceberg. After $7000 in parts, a quick trip to Sydney, offers of assistance from some great friends, excellent customer service from Fenquin Marine, and outstanding mechanical work from Dave Harper - the motor began the refit process today. We will (hopefully) be back on the water on Saturday. Along with everyone else, I am looking forward to seeing 2020 in the rear view mirror.

08.01.2022 With an East Coast Low about to hit us, I thought that the fish should have a bit of a bite this morning. On the way to Montague Island there were massive schools of slimy mackerel everywhere, but nothing chasing them, except for us targeting them to use as strip baits. The photo shows just one of many schools, and yes the water temp was hovering around 18c. After the first hour we only had a morwong and a silver trevally in the esky, and I was wondering what was happening. Then the snapper and morwong got a taste for our slimy fillets. The result was nearly an hour and a half at the cleaning table for 3 or us on the knives.

08.01.2022 The weather station at Montague Island is currently not working. On some sites it is showing wind as 0 knots, this won't be right. Be careful, especially tomorrow - a Gale warning is current. Got some nice kings this morning, and the seals thought that their Christmas dinner was delivered 2 days late - grrrrrr.

06.01.2022 Had an informal trip up to the reefs east of Tuross Heads today, the day went well - fish wise, but I will be off the water for a week while I sort out a mechanical problem (probably a worn uni-joint). The fish of the day went to Jason, a nice fat snapper of 64cm, other reds around the 45-50cm range all fell to fresh squid baits. Despite our efforts, we couldn't get the bigger snapper to release successfully, as they came out of 65mts of water, so they are destined for the d...inner plate. Also boated a nice bag of morwong, nannygai and some cracker flathead - destined for my dinner plate tonight. A reliable report of a 68cm kingfish taken at Montague Is by a Narooma local, there must be some more around, but these reds are hard to ignore. The decision for the next couple of months will be to either go North to Tuross, or East to Montague! See more

06.01.2022 ** Below are some details of the freakish incident which occurred offshore at Narooma on Sunday, where a humpback whale landed on a recreational fishing boat. Nick and Matt are extremely keen fishermen, and can use some help at this time. I have checked out the 'Gofundme' site and the family have confirmed that it is legit. (Thanks for creating this Carmen) Please help. Even a little bit will help them with medical expenses.... https://www.gofundme.com/f/keep-nick-afloat XMA Header Image Keep Nick Afloat, organized by Carmen Bartley gofundme.com See more

04.01.2022 After the 'Full Moon Blues' earlier in the week, causing some less than acceptable results on the fishing front, fortunately 'Team Leeton' had a good session this morning. Snapper were hiding under schools of 'glassies' (small bait fish), on the western side of Montague Island. As well as the snapper we also managed a very mixed bag of mowies, nannygai, goatfish, perch and a small bar cod. Water temp was back up to 17.9c. Fishing the full moon in Winter is very hit and miss, ...unfortunately more miss than hit. Flathead are still scarce at the moment. See more

03.01.2022 *Only 7 days to Retirement.* Justin (see him for your radiator repairs at NATRAD of Wodonga) and his crew are visiting us on their annual pilgrimage to Narooma. Even though he didn't catch the biggest kingfish on today's trip, he was happy to hold up his 67cm king - as it wasnt caught in the mouth, but foul hooked in the cheek. Over the last few days the kings have been fairly spread out, but most have been caught in the 85mtr depth on the North East of Montague Island (a real challenge if your jigging)&&

03.01.2022 Had to take a second look at the sounder this morning, water temp of 24c was a bit of a surprise in December. Spoke to the crew from Underwater Safaris and they reported that the temp was 25c in 20 metres. Still plenty of kings on the North End of Montague Island, with only the very occasional legal king amongst them. If you want to put a feed on the table, there are plenty of large flathead south and west of The Island.

01.01.2022 The weather is always good at Narooma this time of year, unfortunately one of our crew today fell victim to the dreaded curse that is seasickness in a big way. This meant our morning charter only lasted 4 hours, which translates to less than 3 hours fishing. Despite water temp of only 16.5c, we still managed a nice feed of snapper and morwong. 'Fish of the Day' went to Ciaran from Bodalla, with a nice (very fat) 53cm reddie.... No conclusive sign of kingfish today, starting to wonder if the season might be over. Fingers crossed that we get another crack at them.

01.01.2022 NSW Kingfish Management Failure: Apologies for this being a long post, but it is important to all who fish in NSW waters, especially those who chase kingfish:- Background- ...Continue reading

01.01.2022 We were pretty happy with Baz from Jindabyne's 80cm king caught on the Fowl House at Montague Island this morning, that is until Alex from Ulladulla showed me his monster caught on a flat line in the same area. My estimate of Alex's fish was 18-20kg, and if you look closely you can see where he was previously wounded - possibly by a spear when he was a bit younger. Today's kings were very fussy, with our better fish refusing to take baits attached to heavy line. Our legals were taken on 30lb leaders and 30lb braid. Fortunately the Jindabyne crew had plenty of experience playing with trout, and did excellent work on light line. Not much current today, but the water was clear and warm.
