14.01.2022 Always on call! A relaxing weekend off camping west in the Illawarra, a bit of excitement thrown in. It was 37 degrees and the wind picked up. These campers left there site and the wind blew a camp chair into the fire from the previous night. Although it looked out it clearly had enough heat to ignite the chair and then quickly spread through the green grass towards their camptrailer, gas bottle and jerrycan approx 1.5m away from where we stopped it. On return the campers wer...e grateful and couldn’t believe how easily this had happened. They have learnt a valuable lesson. We can not stress the importance of making sure campfires are completely out before leaving the campsite or having someone in attendance with burning campfires at all times. It also pays to have a water bucket or water supply within reach. If it weren’t for the quick thinking of two of Narooma’s local fire fighters this incident could have been catastrophic. Remember with this hot weather and gusting winds fires can get out of control fast. If you see anything suspicious, or if you are concerned about smoke/fire or someone is burning when there is TOBAN in place please call 000 immediately.

11.01.2022 Graham Cummins and the Narooma Men's Bowling Club held a charity bowls day to raise funds for our brigade early last year. They attracted 98 bowlers to the day and were able to raffle off twenty donated items. Several people just made cash donations and Club Narooma donated $100 worth of vouchers as well as providing the venue. They raised a substantial amount of $3000.00 that they donated to the our Narooma brigade. Due to COVID we were unable to organise a public handove...r of the donation at the time. On behalf of our brigade I would like to Thank you all for your efforts and support. As volunteers we dedicate a lot of time and personal funds into maintaining our station and equipment to be able to respond in times of need for our community which we love and value being apart of. 09.01.2022 Four members of Narooma crew among many others from Div 6 were lucky enough to attend the RFSA 2021 Conference held in the Hunter Valley at Crowne Plaza on the weekend. The RFSA opened the Saturday morning event with our video which was made by some of our members about our experience in the 2019-20 fires. The video provoked tears, smiles and laughs. The conference provided many speakers , Commissioner Rob Rogers, Shane Fitzsimmons commissioner of Resilience, Paul and Brent ...from surf life saving speaking of the advantages of UAV drone use, Dr Michael Eburn who spoke on Australian Emergency Law, Professor Ross Bradstock who spoke on Environment risk management of bushfires, Paul Scott manager for mental health within the RFS, who forever has our back and is focused on the recovery of our firefighters and Matina Jewell and Rachel Robertson who shared the stories of their extraordinary journeys. These ladies are absolutely inspiring and I recommend you research them and listen to what they have to say. A huge Thankyou to RFSA president Brian McDonough and all the RFSA crew for inviting us and allowing us to show our story and to Crowne Plaza for hosting an amazing event and supplying us with an abundance of food. 09.01.2022 Today we’re flying our flags at half mast to mark the anniversary of the start of the Currowan bushfire. The Black Summer fires devastated 79 per cent of ou...r shire’s landscape, with the loss of three lives and more than 500 homes destroyed. It’s been traumatic year and the coming weeks will be tough for many in the community. At this time of reflection, we are grateful to the emergency responders who protected us, and we honour the courage of so many residents who worked together to provide safety and comfort in those dark days.
