25.01.2022 $15 MILLION TO HELP UPSKILL PRIMARY PRODUCTION WORKFORCE The successful AgSkilled program has been expanded to include training across a wider range of agricultural sectors and extended until 2023, in a massive boost to the industry's workforce. Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke said the NSW Government has committed $15 million to AgSkilled 2.0 to upskill the state's primary producers in plant-based sectors of the agricultural industry.... "Drought and COVID-19 has shown that it's never been more important to develop a locally-based workforce, and this program will do exactly that," Ms Cooke said. "Our farmers have not been immune to the challenges of the last few years, but AgSkilled 2.0 means that they can upskill, and put themselves in a better position to quickly respond to improved seasonal outlooks and recover from future droughts. "The expanded program targets emerging needs and key areas of production, including horticulture, viticulture and rice growing in addition to the cotton and grain covered in the original program." The expansion comes off the back of the success of the original AgSkilled program, and Steph Cooke said it would continue until 30 June 2023. "The original program delivered training to 5,227 people, over 849 courses across 189 locations to support cotton and grains farmers in regional NSW," Ms Cooke said. "Not only does this upskill primary producers, it also acts as a career pathway, meaning our innovative agriculture sector can secure the skilled workforce it needs. The training is complemented by a range of other Training Services NSW initiatives to support regional NSW. For more information, visit www.training.nsw.gov.au.

23.01.2022 DOMESTIC WATER FILTER UNITS As recently advised, Council is implementing a new measure that will see residences affected by dirty water receive a domestic filter unit to reduce the impact and incidence of coloured water. Council will supply four washable filter cartridges with the filter unit, which will be installed on the house side of the water meter by Council, or a selected contractor, at no cost to the property owner.... These systems have been tested over the past few months with those property owners being very happy with the results. Once installed, the unit is the responsibility of the property owner including any repairs or replacement of filters. Full maintenance instructions will be provided at the time of installation to assist residents and each filter cartridge should last for around six months. The filter cartridges need cleaning approximately every four to six weeks. This treatment will ensure the water entering the property has reduced discolouration, however there will be several older properties with cast iron water pipes which may still experience discoloured water at times. To enquire about a filtration unit please visit https://www.narrandera.nsw.gov.au/environme//water-quality, or contact the Water and Sewer Manager on 02 6959 5510 or email [email protected].

20.01.2022 POLICE REMEMBRANCE DAY Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke is urging the community to pause and reflect on Police Remembrance Day. Every 29 September the men and women who have lost their lives in the line of duty are remembered.... Ms Cooke said it was an important day to remember the service and sacrifice of our police officers. "The NSW Police are often the first on the scene in an emergency, witnessing terrible events, putting themselves in danger, and going above and beyond to keep our communities safe," Ms Cooke said. "In 2020 we have seen them work round the clock during the summer's bushfire crisis and take on the responsibility of enforcing public health orders to keep us all safe and healthy, while continuing their work in protecting the community. This is an enormous workload and I am incredibly grateful for their dedication." "This September 29 I encourage everyone to pause and reflect on the work of the NSW Police, and particularly those who have given their all."
20.01.2022 AT THE LIBRARY We are getting ready for Christmas at the library and have prepared a festive space for the community to visit and take their own Christmas photos (COVID rules apply).

17.01.2022 COOTAMUNDRA ELECTORATE WOMEN ENCOURAGED TO STAND FOR THEIR COMMUNITY Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke is encouraging local women to put their hand up to run for election at the September 2021 council elections. Ms Cooke said local council service offers a rewarding career working with residents and businesses to improve the lifestyle and amenity of the community.... "There are so many women across the Cootamundra electorate who are passionate about their communities. This is a chance to make your voices heard," Ms Cooke said. "The NSW Government is committed to increasing female representation on councils. Help shape our communities by standing for election." Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock said women had plenty to offer the level of government closest to the community. "As a former councillor for 17 years, I know only too well the tremendous contribution women are making in our State's 128 councils and their local communities," Mrs Hancock said. "However, women represent just 31 per cent of all NSW councillors so we must do all we can to inspire and empower more women to stand for their community and run for their local council in September." Minister for Women Bronnie Taylor said strong, effective councils are those that reflect the diverse communities they serve and represent. "You don't need any formal qualifications to stand for election - all you need is a strong will and a desire to make a difference in your local community." Councillor Judi Smith, Cowra Shire Deputy Mayor, said she encouraged women to put themselves forward for what she described as one of the best experiences of her life. "My first four years on council I was the only woman. I have never been treated any differently for being a female and I have been really lucky to work with such a committed group of people," Cr Smith said. "I would encourage any woman to give it a go. We need more diversity on our councils; more female representation, more Indigenous representation and people from all walks of life." The Government has partnered with Women for Election Australia to run a series of workshops to equip aspiring candidates to stand for election at the 2021 elections. More information about the Election of Women to Local Government campaign including the videos can be found on the Office of Local Government website https://www.olg.nsw.gov.au. Workshop details can be found on Women for Election Australia's website https://wfea.org.au.

15.01.2022 NEW UNITS FOR LAKE TALBOT TOURIST PARK Narrandera Shire Council is pleased to announce PCR Building Services Pty Ltd as the successful contractor for the Lake Talbot Tourist Park unit conversion project. This project is part of the ‘Playground on the Murrumbidgee’ Project (POMP), which was awarded $8 million in funding under the NSW Government’s Drought Stimulus Package. The Lake Talbot Tourist Park unit conversion project will include the refurbishment and transformation of... an unused amenity block into two contemporary 2 bedroom units at the venue. Local Narrandera contractor PCR Building Services Pty Ltd, with their strong ability to utilise local goods and services, will construct quality and modern units increasing accommodation options within the tourist park. Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke said the Playground on the Murrumbidgee is one of several new projects to receive a share of a further $41.7 million committed from the NSW Government’s $170 million Drought Stimulus Package. This is an enormous investment into the region and will be a boost for tourism and the local economy, Ms Cooke said. Projects like this help keep money flowing through towns, particularly as we see travel to the region greatly reduced, I am incredibly pleased this contract has been awarded to a local business. This is just one stage of what will be an incredible transformation as the ‘Playground on the Murrumbidgee’ comes to life. Mayor Kschenka said Narrandera Shire has committed $3 million to the POMP. The tourist park is an extremely important part of our visitor attractions. It is great that we are able to use the local contractors for the project so funds are injected back into the local economy. Works will commence late September and are due for completion in February 2021.
15.01.2022 COMMUNITY ORGANISATIONS CAN NOW APPLY FOR NEW CLUBGRANTS FUNDING Community organisations in the Cootamundra electorate impacted by COVID-19 are encouraged to apply for funding, thanks to the next round of the NSW Government's Infrastructure Grants program opening today. Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke said the economic impact of COVID-19 has been felt across many community organisations.... "So many of our local clubs and community organisations have done it tough this year with events postponed and fundraising reduced, which means the important contributions they normally make to our communities has not been able to happen," Ms Cooke said. "These groups are the lifeblood for many communities and I want these organisations to not just keep their doors open but to grow and prosper. "Clubgrants funding is designed to give community organisations a boost when and where it's needed most - it is available for projects to build, repair or upgrade facilities across arts and culture, sport and recreation, disaster readiness and community infrastructure." The last round of the program gave a weighting to projects to repair and rebuild community assets affected by bushfires and COVID-19, and such projects will remain in the priority framework for this round. Community infrastructure is also now a standalone category and it can be used for spaces like halls and meeting rooms, community transport, and infrastructure that supports youth, disability, mental health, homelessness, and domestic violence services. The grants are made possible by the Clubgrants Category 3 Fund which re-invests profits from registered clubs' gaming machines into a statewide funding pool for large-scale community projects. Since 2015, the NSW Government has funded more than 350 community projects worth $62.8 million under Infrastructure Grants. To find out more information or to apply, please visit https://www.responsiblegambling.nsw.gov.au. Applications close 12 October 2020.

04.01.2022 Media Release - Steph Cooke MP 2250 KILOMETRES OF RUMBLE STRIPS ROLL OUT ALONG OLYMPIC AND STURT HIGHWAYS A mass rollout of rumble strips along the Olympic and Sturt highways is under way to improve safety for thousands of NSW road users.... Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the installation of 2250 kilometres of rumble strips - also known as audio tactile line marking - is part of the NSW Government's $640 million Saving Lives on Country Roads initiative, delivering safety improvements on high-risk country roads. "Two-thirds of road deaths in NSW occur on country roads and crashes involving vehicles crossing over the centre line are one of the most severe types of crashes," Mr Toole said. "Rumble strips are a highly effective road safety treatment, known to reduce these incidents by 25 per cent. "This is just one way the NSW Government is working towards a zero toll by 2050 on our roads." Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier and Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke said that starting this month through to April next year, the first lot of 750 kilometres of rumble strips will be installed on the Olympic Highway, starting at Cowra and heading south. "This will be a great boost for the local economy supporting 15 jobs," Ms Cooke said. "Rumble strips are so vital for keeping drivers alert and on the road. One road fatality is one too many and I am so pleased this work is being done to make our roads safer." Work to install 1500 kilometres of rumble strips on the Sturt Highway will follow - from Gol Gol heading east to Hay, and then Hay to Collingullie from February 2021. To limit noise impacts, rumble strips will not be installed within 200 metres of homes or other properties sensitive to noise. Lane closures and a 40 km/h speed limit will be in place during work hours and may affect travel times. For the latest traffic information, visit www.livetraffic.com, download the live traffic app or call the Transport Management Centre on 132 701.
04.01.2022 We're urging parents and carers to keep young children at home if they are sick amid a rise in gastro cases. Director of Public Health, Tracey Oakman, said the ...warning has been prompted by notifications of several outbreaks of gastroenteritis at childcare centres and an increase in number of gastro presentations to Emergency at Griffith Base Hospital. Ms Oakman said gastro was often spread by direct contact with an infected person. Viral gastroenteritis is usually caused by norovirus or rotavirus. The best defence is to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 10 seconds before handling and eating food, and always wash your hands after using the toilet, changing nappies or assisting someone who has diarrhoea or vomiting. Infants or children in childcare or school who develop vomiting or diarrhoea should stay at home for at least 48 hours after their symptoms have stopped, Ms Oakman said. People whose work involves handling food or looking after children, the elderly or patients, should not return to work until 48 hours after symptoms have stopped to avoid spread of infection. Anyone not involved in these occupations should stay home for at least 24 hours. You can find out more at: https://bit.ly/3cISu7N

03.01.2022 Media Release NSW Rural Fire Service: Harvesters urged to monitor conditions across the MIA District Thursday 26th November 2020... The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is urging farmers in the Carrathool, Griffith, Hay, Leeton, Murrumbidgee & Narrandera local government areas to closely monitor weather conditions to help prevent the ignition of crop fires during harvest operations. Superintendent Kevin Adams said farmers play an important role in preventing fires from igniting during periods of greater fire risk. Using harvesting or farm machinery on days of increased risk can be very dangerous as any sparks in dry crops can start fires that spread very quickly, Superintendent Kevin Adams said. These fires have the potential to threaten property and also destroy millions of dollars’ worth of crops. Due to the predicted upcoming weather, Superintendent Kevin Adams said throughout tomorrow (Friday 27th November 2020) and Saturday (28th November 2020) farmers should stop harvesting regularly to check the weather conditions against the Grain Harvesting Guide before deciding whether to continue due to the increased risk of fire. In recent years, a number of substantial fires have been started by farm machinery being used in hot and windy conditions. The NSW RFS appreciates the cooperation of farmers and machinery operators on days of heightened fire danger. A short period of down time until conditions ease will lower the risk of fires breaking out and can prevent a great deal of damage for farmers and their neighbours. Grain Harvesting Guides are available at your local Fire Control Centre and online at: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/harvesting-guide
