21.01.2022 Snake bites are a subject that we've brought up on many occasions over the years but it’s important that we, as pet owners, keep up to date with what is a constant threat. It’s easy to become complacent as the weather cools but snakes are still present in the environment and for that reason we’ve put together the below guide for what to do if the worst happens. If you suspect that your pet has been bitten by a snake you should immobilise them and try and keep them as quiet a...nd calm as possible. It's vitally important that they receive immediate veterinary treatment. If you call your local vet and they don't answer head straight to their clinic or seek an alternative vet if possible. Do not wait for a return phone call, when dealing with a snake bite several minutes can make all the difference! Do not waste time or put others at risk by trying to identify the snake. Individual species of snake often vary in colour and can be all but impossible to identify other than by experienced professionals. The signs of a snake bite by a tiger (below) or brown snake are varied. They may show some or all of the following signs: Sudden weakness followed by collapse. Shaking or twitching of the muscles. Vomiting. Dilated pupils not responsive to light. Blood in the urine. In the later stages paralysis may occur. Veterinary treatment varies with each individual case, how severe the symptoms are and how rapidly the symptoms progress. Treatment usually consists of intravenous fluids and the administration of antivenom to neutralise the snake venom in the pet's body. Some patients can require multiple vials of antivenom. Around 80% of snake bite victims will survive if treated quickly. This survival rate drops dramatically the longer the time between the bite occurring and treatment being sought. Dogs are an inquisitive bunch so we strongly recommend walking them on a leash during the warmer months. Cats however are natural hunters and will attempt to sink their teeth in to practically anything that moves. To lessen the risk to your moggy try and keep long grass and debris in your garden to a minimum. To eradicate the risk entirely keep your cat indoors or build an outside cat run for playtime in the garden. Snake bites and similar occurrences are one of many reasons to look in to how pet insurance can benefit you and your pet. If you come across a snake on your property or in the wild do not attempt to catch it yourself. For advice contact Phil Schenberg on 0416933822. Phil has many years of experience and is a great friend of Narrogin Veterinary Services. Please share and help us reach as many as possible with this vital information. Thank you for reading and stay safe!

16.01.2022 Is your pet suffering from allergies? You can help to reduce their symptoms by partaking in some home care tips!

16.01.2022 Did you know some breeds are more susceptible to allergies than others?

14.01.2022 This little muffin paid us a visit today and took advantage of our current 20% discount on vaccinations (canine and feline) until the end of September. Boo, at twelve years old, also got a senior blood test to check for any problems. As our pets reach their senior years we recommend doing a blood test each year. These can help us pick up on diseases which if found early can often be treated more effectively. Don’t forget, at twelve years old he’d be well over retirement age in human years and, just like us, he needs that extra care and attention.

14.01.2022 You asked and we’ve listened! Due to the massive demand for our 20% discount on canine and feline vaccinations, and us not being able to fit everyone in, we’ll be extending the promotion for one week until Wednesday 7th October. To top it off we’ll also be drawing a name from all the pets who’ve visited us during our vaccine promotion to win a $100 Coles voucher! Don’t miss out, if your furry best mate is due their vaccination simply contact us on 98815417 for a time that’s convenient for you.

08.01.2022 Grass seeds are a common problem during the warmer months. They can lodge in your pet's toes, ears, nose or skin and continue to migrate deeper with your pets general movement. As you can imagine, this can become incredibly painful and at the very least extremely uncomfortable. To help significantly decrease the chances of this happening you should always check your dog after a walk and search between their toes, ears and armpits as well as giving them a general pat down for any rogue seeds.
