20.01.2022 This month’s P&DNSMB profile recognises Michelle Russell’s contribution to the band and proactive involvement within the wider musical community. Michelle always had a musical inclination and in 2016 began to learn the kit drums, however the passion really commenced in 2018 at the Holy Family Primary School Indooroopilly. On that occasion Michelle met P&DNSMB piper Noel Saunders who started her on her musical journey with the band by inviting Michelle to join the band. After... attending her first band rehearsal Michelle joined up straight away. Michelle commenced on the side drums and then progressed to the Bass Drum under the expert guidance of Robin Werda and Mark Sonter, leading to her first public performance in the 2019 St Patrick’s Day Parade. An exciting time for Michelle. Michelle also performed in front of her work colleagues and peers by playing with the band for the 100th year celebration of her workplace at Brigidine College, Indooroopilly for the 2019 ANZAC Day Service commemorations. A passion for playing in bands cumulated in Michelle representing the P&DNSMB in the massed bands at the 2019 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo (ANZ Stadium -Sydney). It was a new and thrilling experience. Love of music led Michelle to perform at QPAC in 2018 as part of an ensemble choir singing in Gaelic leading her to be part of the Queensland Music Festival Choir which will be filmed in May 2021. Michelle’s other interests includes being an avid attendee and volunteer at a number of Brisbane International Tennis Tournaments and is also in her 27th consecutive year (2021) as a season ticket holder for the Broncos. Representing those National Servicemen and all Service personnel who have served their country as well as meeting members of the Community and performing at the many ceremonies and events since joining the band continues to be an honour for Michelle which will always be cherished.

11.01.2022 Happy Anniversary to the band

09.01.2022 Celebrating the 21st Anniversary of the formation of the Pipes & Drums, National Servicemen’s Memorial Band. The P&DNSMB was formed in 1999 by Dales Whyte as a living memorial to the over 300,000 men that were called up for National Service between 1951 to 1959 and 1965 to 1972, who fought, and unfortunately sometimes died in the service of Australia. Dales was a very well known figure within the Queensland pipe band fraternity and as the Drum Major of the then Queensland Po...lice Pipe Band led many parades and events, both with Police and also with massed Pipe Bands. Upon retirement from the Police Force, Dales realised there was a need for a military style band that could take part in ANZAC Day parades and other major events. Dales then approached the Queensland Branch of the National Servicemen’s Association with his vision and received support from the then Management Committee. Because of Dales standing within the band community he very quickly found support from a number of Ex-Service organizations, one of which was the 61st Battalion, Queensland Cameron Highlanders Association. The original idea was to follow the military style of uniform which the band continues to uphold. Through his commitment the band has continued to perform and inspire audiences in the proud traditions and principles when first conceived by Dales back in 1999.

06.01.2022 Introducing this month’s band member profile - Des Stuart. Desmond John Stuart, or Des was 36 years of age when he learned to play the pipes. His son wanted to play the drums and Des agreed as long as it was in a pipe band and so father and son commenced their musical journey, initially joining Redcliffe Pipe Band. Des had the honour of being the oldest learner in the band but his perseverance paid off when he was issued with a band uniform. His first occasion to march with t...he band was to carry their flag on ANZAC Day. Draping his kilt over the back seat of the car to get to the march, Des had to cross the Hornibrook Highway toll bridge. As Des stopped to pay the 2 shilling toll, the toll collector saw the kilt and waived Des through without paying. Des never paid a toll again. Eventually all of Des’ family joined and played in the Redcliffe Pipe Band. Clan Stuart Pipe Band started in 1999 and Des became a member. At one practice the then Pipe Major of the Pipes & Drums, National Servicemen’s Memorial Band, (P&DNSMB), John Arnfield, walked in and asked if any Clan Stuart’s pipers would join them to travel to Canberra and participate in the commemorations for the 60th Anniversary of the formation of National Service. Eight pipers, including Des, then joined the P&DNSMB’s 40 pipers and drummers and traveled to Canberra. After the event Des went to return his loaned P&DNSMB uniform and the Pipe Major said, Keep it. Since then Des has continued to perform with the P&DNSMB. Over the years Des has had the distinction of performing with the ‘Nashos Band’ at a wide range of events including major parades and military ceremonies including four trips to Noumea. Des has enjoyed his time at the ‘Nashos Band’ and he counts every member as a friend. Good Friends and everyone liking pipes & drums - what more could you ask for? See more
