25.01.2022 Did you know that it was not until after the second world war that the large Australian pearl oysters were harvested for their pearl !!!!!!! Prior to that it was known as the "mother-of-pearl oyster" and was in huge demand for this in particular for buttons. For example in 1906 the harvest value of pearls was 450,000 ponds but the shells were worth 1.2 million pounds!! It was only because of the collapse of the mother-of-pearl industry did the focus turn to pearls in earnest. In particular how to cultivate and produce pearls following on from what the Japanese had perfected at the turn of the 1900th century in producing akoya pearls.

For example a parcel of 537 clean round near round pearls ranging from 12mm to 16mm sold for approx $375k AUD that is $700 AUD a pearl and that is why as wholesalers in Australia we are unable to supply quality pearls at low prices. I has also attended South Sea pearl auction in Japan at the end of January and the prices continue to be strong and of course is made more difficult because of the depreciating Australian dollar as all purchases are made in USD or YEN. I was able to purchase a number of parcels of very high quality pearls which are now available for sale as individual pieces or small bag lots. Please call to discuss your needs
