25.01.2022 I know us Speechies talk about book reading a lot but that is because it is so important for language and literacy development! Speech Pathology Australia have recently announced the 'Book of the Year Award' 2020. See below the winners in each age group. - Birth to 3 years: Meerkat Splash by Aura Parker. In this book there's verbal language, relatable stories, rhyme and rhythm of a text and illustrations for non-literal development. - 3 years to 5 years: Charlie's Shell by ...Marina Zlatanova. Promotes phonological awareness, pre-literacy skills, adjective building and confidence. - 5 to 8 years: Goat on a Boat by Suzanne Houghton. Age relevant themes such as friendship and bullying, a narrative form and building a story. - 8 to 10 years: The Little Wave by Pip Harry. Promotes a narrative text with problem solving, sending a message about connection and friendships. Happy Reading :)

23.01.2022 Stuttering or dysfluency can start from the age of 2 years, and it is important to know when to be concerned. Repetitions of words or phrases can be a sign that a child’s language development has exploded and they are figuring out how to express themselves in the most efficient and effective way. This helpful handout may guide you to understand when to give your child time and when to seek some help. Feel free to ask us any questions if you are concerned!! Image: @speechsisters

23.01.2022 Our elf, George, is busy riding back and forth telling Santa about all of the hard work happening in the clinic! Today he enlisted some help from his good pal, Woody, who is navigating their way back to the North Pole. We hope they make it!

17.01.2022 Learning to read is more than just sounding out words on a page! It is important to support a child’s overall literacy skills, including building vocabulary knowledge, word meaning, word relationships and reading comprehension. This will ensure the child has not only understood the words of the book, but will gain meaning from the text as a whole! Happy reading Image: @speechie.morgan

17.01.2022 Our elf, George, has been in quarantine since arriving from the North Pole! This morning we found him getting some presents ready to deliver! He's always keeping an eye out for good boys and girls! We're looking forward to seeing what fun (and mischief) George gets up to over the next few weeks before we close up for Christmas on Friday 18th December!

13.01.2022 Summer is here , and so is a great opportunity to further develop your child's language skills! Try out these tips when you're at the beach: Play I-Spy with all the things you can see at the beach! This will help to facilitate new vocabulary. Build a sandcastle, dig a hole, or build a tent together! This will help with following directions, problem solving, sequencing, and team work!... Collect and compare seashells! Use words such as "big/small" "smooth/rough" "fragile/thick" "translucent". This way, your child is learning new ways to describe.

12.01.2022 Do you have a pre-verbal child who is not yet talking? Check out these great tips on how to facilitate language development! Photo: @mrsspeechiep

10.01.2022 How much of your child's speech should you understand? Parents often understand (or interpret) a lot of what their child says, but other people may have trouble understanding them. Use the following guide for how intelligible your child should be:... 19-24 months: unfamiliar people should understand 25-50% of your child's speech 2-3 years: unfamiliar people should understand 50-75% of your child's speech 4-5 years: unfamiliar people should understand 75-90% of your child's speech 5+ years: unfamiliar people should understand 90-100% of your child's speech Image: @speechsisters

05.01.2022 We love having the option to provide Speech Therapy via Telehealth! It means we can continue supporting people when they can't make it into our clinic. We are even working with children interstate - as far away as Tasmania and Northern Territory!!

02.01.2022 Tomorrow is Developmental Language Disorder Awareness Day! DLD is a disorder which impacts an individuals ability to understand and use language in an effective way. It can create an impact amongst children as they develop socially and it is important for consistent support in their communication environments. It can also impact a child socially and emotionally. We as Speech Pathologists teach strategies to both the children and people around them to allow their communication skills to be used to the absolute maximum of their abilities. #DLDSeeMe
