24.01.2022 Super quick sketch for a super fun Christmas idea! I thought of this a number of weeks ago, and then someone asked for me to do it for them- great minds think alike! So here’s the ultimate social distanced Santa ‘photo’: if you’re avoiding the traditional Santa pic this year, get a painting instead I think I’ll draw up a standard background/Santa and prices will be a slightly reduced version of my standard rates, or just the usual rates if you want a different background (beach/bush Santa?!) Good idea?! Could go either way

23.01.2022 Another of these little ones

22.01.2022 I do love autumnal landscapes Worked straight from a photo for this one!

18.01.2022 So I went back to the RPK submission! Still not sure if I'm going to submit this...it's a mix of watercolour, gouache, ink and digital. 3yo says the Snow Fairy is turning all the pink flowers white (I'll accept that interpretation!) I'm excited to have created something out of my normal realm. Completely different from the first vision I had and happy to have explored some new techniques. Will I try again?! Maybe Get used to all the experimental works- the Cardboard Box illustration challenge starts in a few weeks, and I'm going to be creating outside the box!

17.01.2022 Less than a week until I kick off The Cardboard Box Illustration Challenge and a blog about illustration type things. Am I in any way organised? Not at all But I am keen to explore new techniques, develop some skills and share it all with you. Sounds like something you’d love to participate in? Come and join The Cardboard Box fb group! Link in comments. #CBIC #mycardboardbox #illustrationchallenge

16.01.2022 So whenever I'm doing multiple orders at once, there's always some kind of theme that manages to go across them. This time it was a whole lot of conversation not really related to painting, and me receiving many photos of newborns (in the form of babies, lambs and kittens ) and crazy children- It was delightful but so random that everyone seemed to be doing this at the same time! The hardest part after seasonal days is choosing what order to post all the illos So let's st...art with this one. These boys are super super cute and won't lie, seeing the little one as a chubby little newborn almost (almost) made me want another baby (not going to happen ) It started off with a soccer theme, and then I learnt that hubby is originally from Costa Rica and missing his home country and family at the moment. So we incorporated the Costa Rican beach into it. Love!! See more

16.01.2022 Another Mother's Day gift featuring all the grandchildren. I wasn't sure how new style would go in terms of portraits, but I think it works!

16.01.2022 If anyone is interested in finding out where that splash of colours went (the one I posted on Friday night), it turned into a smorgasbord of experimentation. But this little bit could be heading somewhere interesting! Stay tuned... #experiment #watercolour #illustrator #lotsoflines #scribbles #hopethisgoessomewheregood

14.01.2022 Here’s the cover of one very special Christmas gift I got to work on- A picture book telling the adventures of three cousins during their time living together It was such a joy to work on this very sweet project! Of course, I got to encounter all sorts of technological dramas along the way, but I’ve learnt a lot and it made it to the Christmas tree before Christmas Day Ps. Speaking of ‘Valentine’, get your Valentine’s Day orders in ASAP! ... #custompicturebook #christmasgift #picturebook #kidlitart #illustrator #illustration #cousins #love #family

13.01.2022 It’s been a crazy busy week that involves three play dates, a house inspection (but 24hrs after it happened you never would have guessed the house was immaculate ), launched a blog and illo challenge (not that I’ve done much there ), finished three orders and started some character sketches. I’ve still got to show you the illo I handed over the other day (in return for another gorgeous portrait!) as well...Time to pack these ones up and get a big crack on with a big Christmas project, start illo challenge, work on competition sketches, feed children. No rest for the wicked! #busybusybusy #illustratormumlife #illustrator #watercolour #customillustration #illustratorsoninstagram #imsotired

12.01.2022 PSA! Christmas commissions close in TEN DAYS, so get your order in now before it's too late! I'm currently quickly sketching up a little illo to go onto Miss 3's pre school library bag. Will paint soon. We only started visiting the library a couple of weeks ago (I couldn't remember why it took so long to visit there, until we got there and Miss 1 started screeching and running around the place ). Miss 3 loved it! I loved it! Pretty sure we'll have borrowed out every picture book by the end of the year!

11.01.2022 I am suuuuuper excited to share this one with you! Prepare yourself for a lengthy backstory! This is the first of a series of works that are ever so slowly coming together. A few months ago, I offered a heavily discounted rate to my e-newsletter subscribers- they give me the characters and theme, and I create something that can be used for my picture book portfolio. It’s a win-win for both myself (creating huge challenges for myself, actually getting a wonderfully diverse por...tfolio created- I’m useless at self-directed projects and deadlines. Without client accountability I will literally never get a portfolio done) and my client (yay discount!) I’ll likely do another round of this later this year or next year, so if you’re interested, click the Sign Up button at the top of my page! This one’s for a beautiful family that loves bush walks, Australian animals, a daughter who loves yellow and giving flowers, a mum who stitches hearts and a crescent moon to represent their angel baby So much symbolism in here! The challenge I created for myself: I have always hated painted backgrounds of any sort. People were my absolute preference. Foliage? Tedious and boring. The past few years have forced me to paint some detailed backgrounds but I didn’t particularly enjoy it. But recently, some switch has flicked and I’ve developed some crazy interest in creating fabulous backgrounds! So my aim here was to create a somewhat complex landscape, with depth, mood, tone, limited palette. This tuned out way better than expected! I’ve learnt some things I’d like to do differently next time, but that’s part of the learning process. Onwards and upwards! The next seven in this portfolio collection are gradually coming together, stay tuned

11.01.2022 Hurrah! I have officially started The Cardboard Box blog. First post up, it's just a summary of what exactly TCB is. Illustration Challenge starts tomorrow! Except I need to finish some commissions first, so my first challenge illo will happen next week https://natashahagarty.com.au/the-cardboard-box

09.01.2022 Haven’t had much to post the past few weeks, but not because I haven’t been busy! Been working on a couple of big projects- I’ll share one in a week or so, and the other after Christmas. I’ve also had a massive setback this week as our computer decided to crash and we haven’t got it working yet agh! The one time I aim to get all the line work done digitally Anyway, here’s a pic of me trying to sketch today. It lasted about one minute before everyone decided they needed to make their own contribution to the page #illustratormum #thingsnevergotoplan #artistkids #family #mygirls #illustrator #sketch

08.01.2022 Who knew it would be the end of the year so suddenly! Wishing you all a wonderful 2021

08.01.2022 Another beautiful gift, this time for hubby, at a location that is super special for this lovely little family #illustration #illustrator #gift #customillustration #family #beach #illustrationartists #adventures (Ignore the grey line in the middle, my scanner has issues )

07.01.2022 Here's my entry for The Illustration Station CYA competition. Didn't win, but that's ok- this is the first full landscape I've done with these new little characters and I didn't really know how I wanted to approach landscapes (I still don't ), so with that in mind, I'm ecstatic it got shortlisted at all! Inspiration came from my girls and the absolute joy they get out of splashing in puddles. The landscape came from the property where my parents-in-law live. Every time we go up there, the hills are a different colour. Pretty sure this scene would have happened in real life if all the cousins were up there when those rains broke the drought last year!! Big thank you to Heidi and her judging panel from The Illustration Station and Scholasitc teams!

06.01.2022 I don’t know if this interests anyone, but fb memories reminded me of this list I posted a good number of years ago! I’ve got synaesthesia and see letters, numbers and sounds in colours and, sometimes, textures. An old pianist friend and I documented our colours for musical keys (and we strongly disagreed on each other’s choices ) Anyone else reading have synaethesia? It’s fascinating, especially the people who feel or smell sounds and other things! #synaesthesia #illustrator #illustratorsoninstagram #colour

06.01.2022 I was just randomly scribbling all over the initial sketch just to see what different colour combinations looked like. But then hid the line work and I kind of like it?! Line work drives me nuts and I was aiming to ditch them altogether but couldn’t figure out how...I think I may have had a breakthrough, but can I get it to look like a respectable illustrative style that tells a story... I don’t even know why I’m posting this! Maybe someone out there will have gone through something similar and can give me some insight?! All feedback welcome! #experiment #whatamidoing #feellikesuchanovice #illustrator

06.01.2022 Had the pleasure of creating another little cheeky milkie face this week

06.01.2022 Happy Father's Day! May you all continue bring the magic and adventure into your childrens' lives forever and ever

05.01.2022 So remember that huge piece of paper I posted a few weeks ago? Well, it took 13 days but finally got to its home in rural Vic! Family portrait that needed to fit her 60x90cm frame. Colours in the background link to the colours associated with each daughter. Was so good to draw on such a large scale! Think I need to get all interstate orders done in November to guarantee they’ll make it in time for Christmas

05.01.2022 Family portrait! I ended up with quite a thick, gouche background here which was quite fun and I'll be aiming to play more with those thicker mediums over the next year. How is it mid October already? Far out. Got a couple big, time consuming projects to work on at the moment before launching into all the Christmas orders and completing the next work for the #cardboardboxillochallenge. All the things to do!

04.01.2022 Happy fifth anniversary to this beautiful couple Based on one of their wedding pics, we went pencil with a hint of watercolour

03.01.2022 Family picnic, and I loved this one because it reminded me that I do not do enough (any) Australia flora. Add that to the never ending list!!

03.01.2022 I was allowed to do a quick couch sketch today, thanks kids! Not sure why, but I felt compelled to draw this photo of my girls, Maybe it had something to do with ballerina lions playing catch On another note, commissions are CLOSED for the rest of the year!

02.01.2022 This might sound ridiculous, but I just remembered that I sell gift certificates (I also thought it was Tuesday tonight, so things are going really well here )! Get it on your Christmas list! They can be monetary amounts or for a specific type of illustration (ie. $100 or 8x10" watercolour) and I can post or email them- good last minute gift as well! Shoot me a PM for more info

02.01.2022 Morning! Valentines Day is only six weeks away and commissions are open! Visit my website for more info on the process and pricing, or PM me to discuss #valentinesday #valentinesgift #sentimental #keepsake #customillustration #illustration

02.01.2022 It seems to be illustration competitions galore at the moment! I started this one for one of them but did an awful job at stretching it and decided not to do a rush job on it. Will I ever finish it? Probably not...I’m on the last few orders for September and then have October dedicated to finishing one mammoth and amazing Christmas gift, and starting the @cardboardboxillustrators illo challenge (which was meant to be a monthly thing but I have three different ideas that I want to pursue ). But then I also thought of a way to take that fairy dragon illo into a potentially beautiful direction Plenty to work on for the next month! #shouldprobablytendtothekidsaswell #somuchtopaintsolittletime #illustrationartists #illustrator #illustratorsoninstagram #watercolour #cardboardboxillochallenge

01.01.2022 Another random experiment- playing with shadows, light and diagonals. Hubby asked what they were running from. I’ve decided they’re running away from 2020 Incomplete, but I want to change the palette a bit and try a new medium! #watercolour #gouache #pastel #charcoal #experiment #illustration #illustrationartists #shadowsandlight #diagonals Edit: If anyone’s interested in the actual story behind it (I’m loving everyone’s interpretations!): They’re running back home to make it to dinner in time without getting in trouble- stayed out a little bit too late! I think they found a fairy garden or some magical thing in the forest. Will save that one for another painting
