22.01.2022 4 Health Stars for this food-like substance...Really? Call me stupid, but if I see a ranking of 4 out of 5 for anything, at first impression, Im going to think it will be good. So when one sees 4 HEALTH STARS advertised on a pack of cereal it could be assumed that its good for your health. To be fair, the ranking is a comparison of other packaged foods as stated in the fine print on the side of the box. It also claims that it is a source of protein and fibre. If you we...re to consume 8000 kJ of this food-like substance which is approximately the daily energy requirements of a 70kg person, (breakfast, lunch and dinner) it would contain 105g of protein and 25.5g of fibre, which is still 5g under the 30g recommended daily intake (we should be aiming for 100g of fibre). You will also be consuming 133.5g or 33.3 teaspoons of SUGAR. 33 TEASPOONS! This product rates 4 STARS for obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and type-2 diabetes. It is a 4 star ranking for the profits of the wheat industry, the pharmaceutical industry and our duopoly of supermarkets. It is NOT Ironman food and my opinion Is that this health rating system is misleading. The NatCare rating for this product is a star. Try and eat wholefoods and avoid anything packaged. See more
20.01.2022 The doctor’s waiting room usually has an array of brochures recommending advice for certain health issues. While waiting for an appointment I picked up one that was titled Live Well, tips for healthy living after 65 years. These days it seems that being over the age of 65 and not on a cocktail of pharmaceutical medications is becoming very rare so I was interested in what tips were being recommended. It spoke about being hydrated by drinking lots of water or soups, being ...Continue reading
17.01.2022 As we rush off to the doctor or chemist to get relief from heartburn and reflux, it is important to know that recent studies are linking an increased risk of dementia and the long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPI's) such as omeprazole, pantoprazole, lansoprazole, esomeprazole, or rabeprazole. Some of the brand names of these drugs are Nexium, Prilosec, Somac and Prevacid. A recent analysis with a total of 73 679 participants, 75 years of age or older, showed a signifi...cant risk of acquiring dementia in those who took the medication compared to those who did not. Prior studies on mice found that PPIs increased the levels of b-amyloid in the brain which is one of the hallmarks of Alzheimers dementia. You can read the study here: http://jamanetwork.com/j/jamaneurology/fullarticle/2487379 It is important to look at natural ways to relieve reflux as these drugs have quite serious side-effects. Reducing the production of stomach acid increases the chance of bloating, flatulence, abdominal tightness, heartburn, indigestion, undigested food in stools, constipation, abdominal cramping and bad breath. The use of PPis has also been linked to vitamin and mineral deficiencies especially vitamin B12, vitamin C, calcium, iron and magnesium.
15.01.2022 An article by The Age reporting on the "health" star rating. Understanding what is and isn't healthy to eat is complicated enough, but when you have the food industry in the pockets of politicians this is the result. http://www.theage.com.au//calls-for-added-sugars-to-be-use
15.01.2022 Couldn't have explained it better myself!
12.01.2022 Apart from the water, you probably wouldn't consume whats on this plate. Flour , yeast, sugar, salt, oil and additives. Mix it, add some heat and you have bread.
11.01.2022 Drugs used to treat heartburn, ulcers and reflux have been linked to premature death, and everything from fractures to dementia. MORE: https://yhoo.it/2tcWdFe.
