15.01.2022 Research out of the Watson Headache Institute reveals that there is more neck involvement in headache and migraine than previously believed. According to Watsons research It is reasonable and logical that upper cervical (neck) dysfunction has the potential to sensitise (the Trigemino-Cervico Nucleus (TCN) in) the brainstem. This means upper neck dysfunction can turn up the volume on your brainstem thus resulting in increased headaches. Nathan our Principal Physiotherapist at Physio23 has a special interest in treating headache and migraines. He has completed training at the Watson Headache Institute in Sydney. If you are experiencing headaches or migraines consider an assessment with Nathan. Book online at www.physio23.com.au or call 0413 419 981.

13.01.2022 How to Combat Netflix Posture During this time of social distancing you may find yourself engaging in a bit more Netflix binging . You know the drill, you sit down to watch just 1 episode of Next in Fashion and before you know it youve completed the whole series plus 3 action packed movies. ... Then when you finally do try to peel yourself off the couch your neck, back and hips hurt which makes it difficult to complete other tasks in your day. So when you find yourself going down the endless blackhole that is Netflix options, remember these 3 tips: 1. Watch your posture. - Sit on the couch or chair properly instead of sprawling out across it. - Use a small cushion or rolled towel behind your low back to help add support if you find it difficult to sit up straight for more than a few minutes at a time. - Gently draw your shoulders down and back away from your ears and pull your chin in over your sternum (chest bone). 2. Set timers - It is very easy to get engrossed in the program/ movie your watching so set a timer on your phone and put it in an inconvenient place out of your reach. This will mean you have to get up when it goes off to stop it rather than just hitting snooze for another episode. - While your up try some gentle exercise like calf raises, mini squats, arm circles, etc. 3. Schedule in some exercise time. - Create a schedule for yourself and stick to it! In this schedule allow a set time for Netflix and when that time is up, move on to the rest of your schedule. - One very important thing to remember is exercise! Schedule at least 30 minutes each day to get your body moving. Even though gyms are closed you can still accomplish a lot at home.

Theres no need to force strenuous exercise, just some gentle walking and natural movements (gentle back bends, side bends, etc) will help. 2. Watch your posture! 10.01.2022 How to safely return to sport or gym after COVID-19 With gyms and sport slowly reopening many people are itching to jump back into their normal fitness regime or weekly sport. Although this is a great thing to look forward to, jumping straight back into the same level of activity that you were engaged in prior to the shutdown puts you at an increased risk for injury. Heres a few things you can do while recreation opening hours are still restricted to reduce that risk and en...sure a smooth return: Maintain a regular workout schedule at home 5-6 days a week to avoid a sudden spike in training once things reopen. Just because you dont have the same equipment at home doesnt mean you cant workout at a similar intensity to your normal training. Work on specific skills you need for your sport if able. Get creative with equipment if neededjust make sure its safe! Mix it up at home To prevent boredom and decreased motivation mix up your home workouts. Try incorporating yoga, Pilates, walking, running, bike riding, dancing, etc into your week. Maybe try doing a Zoom session with friends from the gym to add some fun and add accountability. Be prepared for a very SLOW and very GRADUAL return to training Try using a graded scale from 1-10 for your sessions. Difficulty: 1 = very easy and 10 = very difficult Record your score each day while working out at home. Then gradually work on increasing the intensity rating over a 4 week period. *Adapted from Shift Movement Science *Image credit Unsplash
