17.01.2022 The New Year's Eve Carnival was started in the late 50's by a group of locals that wanted to help the Nathalia Hospital to obtain additional medical requirements. Some of the first events were dances in a local woolshed. The first New Year's Eve Carnival was held in the main street in about 1963, with a car as the raffle prize for the hospital. The local garages would take it in turn to help with the supply of the car. Nathalia Rotary, Lions and Apex clubs took over the runni...ng of the carnival in the 1970's, this was the start of the New Year's Carnival committee. After the Apex Club folded in the early 80's, Rotary and Lions ran it jointly. With insurance constraints and costs becoming an issue Lions took over the running of the NYE Carnival in the mid 90's. With the help of many locals who volunteered to join the Carnival Committee, the Carnival was built up to a large street carnival that spilled out over the road and along the creek banks. We have been fortunate to obtain grants and sponsorships to upgrade power and lighting along the main street and creek side, the committee always tries to improve and evolve the carnival. Blake Street closure was the main factor in the success and growth of the Carnival. Moira Shire Council was able to assist with the closure when it was introduced up until 4 years ago. The Vic Roads regulations made it mandatory that traffic management companies run the road closure and costs have risen dramatically since. The fireworks display started in 1999 as an event to bring in the new year 2000, being so popular they have stayed as a fixture to end the night with. Crowds well over 1000 people came from all over to see the display. With generous sponsorship they have been able to be continued as their costs rose. Due to dwindling numbers of able-bodied members in the Lions Club we have made the decision that we can no longer take on the running of this community event. It takes a huge amount of preparation work in applying for permits, seeking sponsors and grants to support the ever-increasing costs. Also, some of the current members who have been helping run it over the last 30yrs have run out of puff. The Lions Club is taking this step to inform the community so the community has every chance of keeping the NYE Carnival alive. How do we keep it running. It needs a body to take care of the insurance side of it and enthusiastic people to form a committee. See more

07.01.2022 At our last meeting Nathalia & District Lions Club had to make a decision about the New Years Eve Carnival. We would like to inform the community, sponsors, stall holders, and supporters that we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Carnival including the Fireworks and Hospital Raffle. This wasn't an easy decision to make but due to the COVID -19 pandemic many restrictions have been put in place making it almost impossible for the club to run it. Planning for the ...carnival begins in August, applying for permits through local governing bodies, Vline & emergency plans and applications have to be all applied for during this time. Due to the uncertainty of what lies ahead it would be unfeasible and irresponsible on the club's behalf to proceed when we cannot guarantee the safety of our community and all those involved. Due to COVID 19 taking it's toll, on a lot of business in one way or another, we believe that we could not ask our sponsors for sponsorship when they themselves are experiencing a financially tough time. We hope you all understand this difficult decision. We would like to thank you for all your support in the past and hopefully we can proceed with the carnival in 2021. See more
