21.01.2022 On 18th July NCNED researchers Cassandra Balinas and Stanley du Preez attended the 19th International Congress of Mucosal Immunology Conference in South Bank, Brisbane. This conference exclusively focused on the interface between the immune system and the environment at mucosal surfaces. Both researchers presented posters entailing the novel identification and characterisation of TRPs from ME/CFS patients. Improving the functionality of these channels following drug modulation is currently being undertaken at NCNED.

21.01.2022 NCNED: Important Publication The NCNED team has just published an important paper titled A systematic review of cytokines in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Systemic Exertion Intolerance Disease (CFS/ME/SEID). Matthew Corbitt, Natalie Eaton-Fitch, Donald Staines, Helene Cabanas and Sonya Marshall-Gradisnik. To view the article, please use the following link: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/nKM7C5QZJlI1qRNrCyQaOc The results showed that cytokines do no...t exhibit a conclusive role in CFS/ME/ SIDS and thus do not serve as reliable biomarkers. Our research was based on a review of 16,702 publications of which 14 studies met acceptable scientific standards for analysis. Quality assessment was undertaken on study design, methodology and level of evidence. Ten of the studies measured serum cytokines, and four measured cytokines in other physiological fluids.

16.01.2022 NCNED is pleased to expand on previous research findings as non-scientists may struggle with this information. Patch clamp is the gold... standard technique for ion channel research. NCNED is the first, and at this stage only, CFS/ME research group world-wide to undertake this challenging work on natural killer (NK) cellsan extraordinary achievement. If you are wondering about sample sizes, sample size is largely irrelevant in patch clamp research. Being a gold standard technique a study size of 2 (1 patient: 1 healthy control) is insightful and compelling. A study of 6 patients and 6 age and sexed matched controls is far in excess of acceptable scientific methodology. NCNED has now reproduced and published these important results twice with another publication in this area being finalised in the coming weeks. Other groups have not mastered these techniques yet, although we encourage them to do so. NCNED has simultaneously published the scientific techniques associated with these results and will be pleased to share these methodological techniques with any reputable scientific research group engaged in bona fide CFS/ME research. All NCNED research papers undergo a rigorous peer review process by appropriately skilled scientists who have expertise in this area prior to acceptance and publication. Ill informed commentary is regrettable as it demonstrates we have some way to go to overcome poor understanding of appropriate scientific methodologies in some sections of the CFS/ME social media arena. The finding of TRP associated pathology is an exciting development in CFS/ME research and the patch-clamp technique enables pharmacotherapeutics to be tested in the laboratory to discover suitable drugs for patients. We are making great progress in this area. Thank you to all our wonderful supporters and we will try to explain it all as we move forward. Best wishes Sonya, Don and the NCNED team who are working for the CFS/ME patients to make a difference.

14.01.2022 Michael Matula is a research student who has recently joined NCNED. Michael is a Clinical Physiologist in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine. His research project will involve reviewing the literature on the link between objective measures of sleep quality (such as sleep efficiency and staging demonstrated on the hypnogram of the EEG) and symptoms experienced by patients. A case series of patients with diagnosed CFS/ME assessed through various sleep centres will then be compiled,... the data analysed and their PSG findings compared with their documented symptoms from a thorough quality of life questionnaire. It is hoped that by understanding the possible link between objective sleep disruption and symptoms affecting quality of life, this can give insight on ways to improve sleep architecture and the effect this would have on the symptoms experienced by these patients. 13.01.2022 , (), () /. Dr Helene Cabanas, Ms Cassandra Balinas and Mrs Natalie Eaton-Fitch will be attending and presenting important data from NCNED. The data presented at the FASEB Conference will outline a second ME/CFS cohort investigated at NCNED which has TRPM3 dysfunction. Importantly this new study ...re-validates previous findings reporting this dysfunction of TRPM3, a calcium channel receptor, in a separate ME/CFS cohort. This new study also reported even using another TRPM3 activator, Nifedipine, did not activate this receptor for calcium entry. NCNED would like to thank all the patients who participated in this research and our supporters. Thank you to the Stafford Fox Medical Research Foundation, Mr Douglas Stutt, the Mason Foundation, the McCusker Charitable Foundation, Mr Adrian Flack, Mr and Mrs Ian and Talei Stewart, the Alison Hunter Memorial Foundation, the Buxton Foundation, the Henty Community, the Blake Beckett Foundation, Change for ME Charity, QLD ME/CFS/FM Support Association QLD Inc, the ACT ME/CFS Society and WA ME/CFS.

13.01.2022 , NCNED research team member, Dr Helene Cabanas, attended and presented her research at the prestigious international EMBO symposium held in Bangalore, India from the 26th to the 29th of January 2020. The focus of this meeting was on the most recent developments in calcium signalling and their impact on health and disease. Dr Cabanas presented a research poster that identified for the first time the calcium-permeable nonselecti...ve cation channel, TRPM3, as a novel and attractive therapeutic target for the treatment of ME/CFS. She reported impaired TRPM3 ion channel function in immune cells from three different cohorts of ME/CFS patients using the gold standard of patch clamp technique. She also presented novel data describing restoration of TRPM3 ion channel function after in vitro treatment with Naltrexone, suggesting the potential use of this drug as a therapeutic intervention for ME/CFS. NCNEDs world leading research showing ion channels and calcium signalling are implicated in ME/CFS highlights the role of numerous TRPs in the pathology of ME/CFS.
