11.01.2022 Banner Repairs at Sydney Trades Hall. Our original Federated Seamen’s Union banner made by Althouse and Geiger was originally unfurled on Tuesday 19 September 1...899 at Federation Hall, Church Hill, Sydney. The ex-Premier George Yes-No Reid performed the ceremony. Since this unfurling it has been housed at Sydney Trades Hall. It was on loan at the Lithgow State Mine Heritage Park last year, where it was accidentally torn, damaging one corner. The banner is receiving intensive repairs by Karen Coote from Antiquities Conservation. This large banner made of canvas, with newish fabric borders, has aged and deteriorated over time, so it is quite fragile. Sydney Trades Hall is very lucky to have this original banner in Karen’s professional hands and care and we are looking forward to when we can display it again in all its glory. Stay tuned for further updates and for when we will be able to show it in the atrium. 08.01.2022 March is Women's History Month and to celebrate we have been working on two displays in the Menzies Library. The first display highlights women in trade unions... and the Labor movement from the late 1800s to 2000s. The display includes minute books of trade union equal pay committees; pamphlets and badges relating to feminism and the women’s movement; photographs and short biographies of prominent women in trade unions including Della Elliott, Mary Wright and Henrietta Greville; and various records from the Union of Australian Women. The second display highlights the history of the Women’s Studies Program at the ANU, which ran from 1976-2000. The display includes a variety of posters, pamphlets, magazines, correspondence and short biographies of those associated with establishing and running the program including Ann Curthoys, Jill Matthews, Dorothy Broom and Susan Magarey. Throughout March we will be highlighting some of the amazing women from the ANU, trade unions and Labor movement. Our Women's History Month displays can be seen in the Menzies Library until the end of March. ANU Gender Institute
07.01.2022 On this day in history, 24th of February 1834, (186 years ago) Dorset farm labourer George Loveless set off to work, saying good bye to his wife Betsy their thr...ee children. They were not to meet alone again for 3 years, as George was arrested. Loveless and five fellow workers his brother James, James Hammett, James Brine, Thomas Standfield and Thomas's son John were charged with having taken an illegal oath. But their real crime in the eyes of the establishment was to have formed a trade union to protest about their meagre pay of six shillings a week the equivalent of 30p in today's money and the third wage cut in as many years. They were sentenced for transportation to Australia. Few ever returned from such a sentence as the harsh voyage and rigours of slavery took their toll. After the sentence was pronounced, the working class rose up in support of the Martyrs. A massive demonstration marched through London and an 800,000-strong petition was delivered to Parliament protesting about their sentence. After three years, during which the trade union movement sustained the Martyrs' families by collecting voluntary donations, the government relented and the men returned home with free pardons and as heroes.
