24.01.2022 #IWD2018 Among the many females whose lives are celebrated on the Tasmanian Honour Roll of Women are the following three remarkable people who have contributed... greatly to the community of Northern Tasmania. Dorothy Edwards Through Dorothy's work with the National Council of Women, legislation was amended which would enable females to stand in local government elections. Following her role on Council from 1949, Dorothy was then elected Mayor of Launceston in 1955-57. Mayor Edwards drove the construction of the City Baths (now Launceston Aquatic) and worked to improve flood prevention methods. Isabella Mead Isabella was QVMAG's first female director. During her time at the organisation, Isabella introduced a new way of cataloguing items which has proved efficient to this day. Isabella also held office in the Royal Society of Tasmania and worked with the National Trust of Tasmania and other community groups. Dame Marjorie Parker A radio announcer for almost three decades, Dame Marjorie was known and loved for her commitment to charity and community organisations. She instigated the 7EX Children's Fair, was the first female elected as President to the Royal Commonwealth Society and started Meals on Wheels in Tasmania. More detail about the lives of these dedicated women and others is available at the Department of Premier and Cabinet's website: www.dpac.tas.gov.au//progra/tasmanian_honour_roll_of_women Pic L-R: Dorothy Edwards in early 1950s, Isabella Mead in early 1950s, Dame Marjorie Parker taken by the Examiner newspaper in the 1980s.
