18.01.2022 [NAS Studio Feature] We spoke with BFA 2 student Aaron (@ajmcgarry) about his practice and NAS student experience. "Most of my practice deals with absence/presence & liminal spaces. I use a lot of recycled materials in my work to help support this, examining the time between a materials production and its ultimate end. By changing the original form or function to create a new narrative, memory or meaning, it speaks to environmental, social and political concerns of an uncerta...in future. Recently in Soft Sculpture rotation, I got to look at Queer culture through repurposed fabric from my ‘dance-party/club clothes.’ It can be seen as a joyful celebration of what was and what is currently still missing for the Queer community during COVID restrictions. Everything about NAS is great! I feel really lucky to be learning here. From the social aspects of meeting new likeminded people, to checking out what the other departments are working on, there’s a great communal vibe on campus and everyone supports everyone else. I’m in the Sculpture department and it is the bee’s knee’s! I’ve learnt great technical skills, had amazing support from the teaching and tech staff and made some great friends... we have a really lovely time in Sculpture. I first came to NAS in the early 2000’s because of the technical and practical approach to learning. Sadly half way through first year I left, not fully appreciating the opportunity and failed make the most out of the experience. Dropping out was one of my biggest regrets, so almost 15 years later I’ve returned to finish the degree I started at NAS. I really appreciate the rounded approach NAS offers, I’ve found art history and theory really enjoyable this time round, and I’ve learnt more in Sculpture this year than I’ve picked up on my own for the past 15 years."
