13.01.2022 The Bonsai Pot Acquisition Prize was designed to encourage the appreciation of the art of bonsai pottery and to highlight the beauty and functionality of bonsai pots. The style of the pot adds to the aesthetics, the emotions evoked and to the way a bonsai is styled and maintained. Entrants were challenged to design a pot for an Australian native bonsai, Agonis flexuosa, Willow Myrtle. We have been so impressed with the imagination, creativity and craftsmanship of the pots received for the Bonsai Pot Acquisition Prize. Whilst the display of the pots at the Collection was cancelled due to COVID-19, we can share the pots with you online. Which pot do you like? Stay tuned to find out who the winners are. #NBPCA #Ausbonsai #Australianbonsai #AABC #Bonsaiempire #BFA

11.01.2022 It’s time to prune and thin out the Collection’s Niwaki Japanese black pines. The two Niwaki adjacent to the Village Centre’s southern deck date back to 1951 and were donated by Dorothy Koreshoff. #bonsai #nbpca #nationalarboretumcanberra #australianbonsai

11.01.2022 Congratulations to Luke Parsons who received third place in the Bonsai Pot Acquisition Prize at the National Bonsai & Penjing Collection of Australia. The judges were impressed by the earth tones of this beautiful pot which would complement many Australian native species. With the contrast and use of colours, the artist has created a versatile pot that would complement the featured bonsai bark and foliage. The pot will become a permanent feature of the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia. Luke receives $400 in prize money thanks to the NBPCA Bonsai Trust Fund.

08.01.2022 On behalf of the National Bonsai & Penjing Collection of Australia, we wish everyone a happy World Bonsai Day. Please enjoy this short video from one of our most documented and iconic Australian trees in the Collection, the Angophora costata (smooth barked apple gum). This species is one of three that form the Gum family of trees in Australia, along with Eucalypt and Corymbia. The age of this tree dates back to 1959 and was originally styled and trained by Melbourne based artist, Ted Poynton. Ted is skilled in Australian native bonsai and grew this tree from nursery stock. An iconic tree within our Collection that has received praise from many international visitors. Music credit: Gidgi Gum - Aboriginal Dreamtime

06.01.2022 Congratulations Pat Kennedy, winner of the Bonsai Pot Acquisition Prize! The challenge of the competition was to create a pot was for an Australian native Agonis flexuosa bonsai. The judges were unanimous about the winner. The pot, expertly crafted with a high degree of technical quality, shows a well-balanced and stable foundation for the tree to reside. The colours and contrasts of the pot complement the tree’s bark and foliage colours subtly as if they were meant to be ...together. The depth of the pot is sympathetic to the horticultural requirements of the tree. The crackle appearance of the pot marries well with the fissured bark of the featured tree. The size and balance of the pot, along with the tree will create an overall composition befitting of Australia’s National Collection. The winning pot will become part of the permanent collection at the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia with the Agonis flexuosa to be re-potted as soon as the weather permits in late spring to early summer. Pat takes home $1000 thanks to the NBPCA Bonsai Trust Fund. Thanks to all the entrants who put so much thought and care into creating their pots. #AusBonsai
