20.01.2022 Today is World Occupational Therapy Day! National Disability Services celebrates occupational therapy (OT) and the many ways occupational therapists help people... to reach their potential. In the light of recent bushfires and the global pandemic, this year’s theme is Resilience: supporting our communities to rebuild, recover, and re-engage. NDS’ Acrod Parking Program has for many years engaged OTs within its team to assess and review eligibility for ACROD parking permit applications. Philip Smith, OT for the ACROD Parking Program, shares some insights. Philip what does your role at ACROD Parking encompass? The OT position sits within the Access and Inclusion Team, in the Customer Service space. The primary role is to assess submitted applications for ACROD and Companion Card WA which can involve liaising with the applicant, agencies and health professionals, if more information is required. Each application is assessed on a case by case basis, using a decision tree, against the national eligibility criteria and a healthy dose of clinical reasoning. The OT also has a resource role within the team. What does your professional training as an OT bring to the role? OT has a varied role, with a background in function, activity and occupation. OT’s also have an understanding of the impact of disability on a person’s function and mobility. In your experience, what’s something people applying for an ACROD permit should consider or undertake first? Check the eligibility criteria and exclusions before applying, as filling out a form takes time and effort. Eligibility is around a severe functional mobility restriction. Consider the distance you are able to manage, before needing to stop and rest. The form asks many questions for you to answer. You will need your GP or OT to complete the 2nd part of the application and confirm the information. With the upcoming ‘This Bay Is Someone’s Day’ ACROD Parking Campaign, what perspective can you offer to encourage people to not misuse the bays? Consider this scenario: The shopping centre carpark is very full, as it’s school holidays. The only available bays are ACROD, so you park in a bay but have no permit. ‘I’m just ducking into the shops and won’t be long’. That simple decision could have a big impact on whether someone is able to access the shops at all and they may have to turn around and go home. Stop and think before you act! Why is the underpinning value of viewing a person holistically so important to the profession of OT? OT is about maintaining/improving quality of life, and supporting people to achieve life goals and independence. What do you think is commonly misunderstood about OTs? The origins of OT were to assist WW1 Veterans who returned home injured. Art and Craft was a primary occupation for returned soldiers. OT’s aren’t basket weavers! It’s a people centred profession and focussed on a person’s goal, aspirations and bringing purpose and meaning to life, through activity and occupation. How do you think OTs can assist the community to rebuild, recover, and re-engage? A whole raft of reasons can limit people in life. OT’s can help overcome some of those barriers, assist skill building and rebuild, recover and re-engage with friends, family, colleagues, community and that’s always positive. #NDS #ACRODParkingProgram #ThisBayIsSomeonesDay #ParkRightDayAndNight Image: man with glasses sits at desk with computer with ACROD Parking application in hand, at work at NDS office.
