23.01.2022 The average adult takes up to 20 breaths every minute, something most people give little thought. However, breathing can be a daily struggle for people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), an umbrella term for a group of lung conditions that includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis and chronic asthma. For Professor Anne Holland, investigating supportive therapies for people with chronic respiratory disease has been a career focus. A professor of physiotherapy at ...Monash University and Alfred Health in Melbourne, she has been looking at in-home rehabilitation as a way to improve access for patients with COPD. #NHMRC's #TenOfTheBest celebrates success stories from Australia’s health and medical researchers. https://www.nhmrc.gov.au//breathing-easy-improving-access- #chronicobstructivepulmonarydisease #COPD #emphysema #chronicbronchitis #chronicasthma #worldasthmaday #TenoftheBest

22.01.2022 Nada Powell, one of #NHMRC’s first indigenous interns is about to finish her medical degree, start her internship and is looking to start a Masters in public health. Originally when I had started my degree I just wanted to do it and get working but this internship opened my eyes to what else I could, such as research. If I wanted to do research I could do it; I could do a PhD! Nada’s project with NHMRC involved interviewing Indigenous researchers and writing news articles... for the communications team. This led Nada to be inspired to do more, she said. 19.01.2022 Professor John Bekkers is a cellular neuroscientist from The John Curtin School of Medical Research - JCSMR who leads a team researching the neurons and circuits in the brain that underlie the sense of smell. The sense of smell is a very primitive sense which makes it simpler and easier to understand than other brain areas. The funding I have received from the #NHMRC allows me to hire young scientists and to pay for the research that is carried out in our lab. Without that kind of support this research would be impossible. View more about Professor Bekkers and his team's research https://www.nhmrc.gov.au//news-cen/unlocking-secrets-brain

The NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence to end Rheumatic Heart Disease (END RHD) has launched the RHD Endgame Strategy: The blueprint to eliminate rheumatic heart disease in Australia by 2031. This will mean there will be no more children like Tenaya to suffer from this life threatening disease, which disproportionately affects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. http://ow.ly/7ORX50CeZNI

10.01.2022 Australians take more antidepressants than almost anyone else in the world, and the number of prescriptions keeps rising, yet there is little evidence to guide for how long antidepressants should be used. Professor Jane Gunn from The University of Melbourne began a short, one-year study looking at how people who present with depressive symptoms were treated. The Diamond Study turned into a major 13-year project, following hundreds of patients through their primary care jour...ney. After about 10 years we decided to start wrapping up the study because we kept finding the same things over and over. One big thing that really jumped out at us was the under-researched area of the connection between physical and mental health." Professor Gunn and her team used the findings from Diamond to develop an innovative web-based tool to help GPs identify patients at risk of depressive symptoms and match them with tailored treatment options. Despite the setbacks some individuals face, we saw time and time again in Diamond that human beings have a remarkable capacity to bounce back. Professor Gunn is one of #NHMRC’s #TenOfTheBest. 05.01.2022 The formation of abnormal proteins in the brain has long been suspected to contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. Yet many individuals with abnormal protein formations do not go on to develop such diseases. Professor Ashley Bush discovered that the major forms of protein found in Alzheimer's disease are influenced by interactions with metal ions such as iron, copper and zinc. Professor Bush, whose doctoral research was sup...ported by NHMRC, subsequently received three NHMRC Research Fellowships and an Australia Fellowship to support further development of this work. https://www.nhmrc.gov.au//case-study-neurodegenerative-dis #NHMRCInFocus The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health
