23.01.2022 Oh for days of yore! People arrived at the Contemplation Building and I gave the soldiers’ five on what the Walk was about and what we were going to do today. The RSMs hit the starter button and away the green machine went and continued going till the paperwork was done. Try that in civvie street! We mulched close to 500 metres by 10 metres of ground within the time for brekky at 0830 and all with only 20 people on site. No help from above as we had our own deity hard at wo...Continue reading
21.01.2022 Hot and sticky conditions but the fabulous few once again got the job done !! Smile These words are from our erstwhile photographer Rod N. Hello All and a happy Australia Day. I have just finished watching Grace, our Australian of the Year talk on the news. What an erudite lady with a ton of guts and marvelous looks to match. Her determination and fortitude should be a lesson to any right thinking person. Granted I don’t know everyone in Australia but I reckon it wou...Continue reading

21.01.2022 Good Day all. A bit slack but also a bit busy, so I will try to pass on all the news for the last couple of weeks. The sick list includes Trevor Pond, Margaret Deveraux and Ron Woodrow. They are all receiving treatment for their ills. We all wish them a satisfactory return to good health. At the end of July it will be six months since we wound up the RAR Assn Qld and became The RAR National Memorial Walk Volunteers. The changeover went relatively smoothly thanks to a lot of w...Continue reading
21.01.2022 Good Evening All, I trust you are well and things are well in your bailiwick. All was good last Monday and a lovely Brisbane winter’s day jumpers were off by 0830 on our way to a temp of 25. Admin first, Ron W is now walking with the aid of a stick under strict supervision of Ivy and the DVA Physio, so he is getting there but with age it is a slow process. It was good to see Trevor Pond turn up looking sore and sorry with his walking stick but with his cheek and humour h...Continue reading
21.01.2022 Today marks 75 days until we commemorate 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and with it, the first of our 75 stories in 75 days telling some of... the stories of the thousands of Australians who served. Our first story is that of Hilda Gray who served in the Women’s Land Army. I encourage you to listen to Hilda’s story, as well as all those we post in the lead-up to this important anniversary. Thank you for your service Hilda. #TYFYS #OneInAMillion
21.01.2022 Karl James, head of Military History at the Australian War Memorial, recounts the day Australia announced it was at war, 3 September 1939, which was also Father's Day that year. #OneInAMillion #TYFYS
20.01.2022 WATCH || 120 personnel from Australian Army's 8th/9th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment in Brisbane have deployed to the New South Wales border in support of ...the most recent outbreak of #COVID19 in neighbouring state Victoria. At the request of the NSW Government 120 soldiers were recalled from leave many of whom travelled back to Gallipoli Barracks overnight to quickly deploy and support NSW Police Force with virus containment and vehicle checkpoints on the Victorian border. Commander of the 7th Combat Brigade Brigadier Jason Blain gave encouraging words before the departure, reinforcing the importance of this service to the Australian community. When our citizens get to those border checkpoints they are going to see police, they’re going to see you, and they’ll know that you’re there to protect them." Commander Blain said. They know what you’ve done previously in supporting Victoria through this year’s bushfires. Read the story: https://bit.ly/89Bdeployed #OpCOVID19Assist

19.01.2022 Hi All, In the last photo is a rarity for us it is a new recruit! His name is Sam and he did time with 6 RAR and worked on the gate for security for a while and used to wonder what us oldies did on a Monday, he found out and here he is. He is very keen and has the right attitude toward the Regiment and the Regimental Family and introduced himself to all that turned up. However, as you can see by the photo he has some learning to do especially by not doing the hard yakka wh...Continue reading
18.01.2022 National Memorial Walk Report Date 19 December 2020 A very thirsty Walk welcomed 130mm over the week and more since. It will do wonders for the place but in other ways be a hindrance such as it is too wet to have the turf cut and delivered and the Western Bank will now have turf laid in the new year. Another downsize is Wombat’s nemesis, the dreaded weeds: they are everywhere. ...Continue reading

13.01.2022 Hi All, No report this week as have been at the Walk helping to erect the sandstone wall and fertilisilng and watering all lawn areas. It will take me the weekend to finish it off. However, attached are Rod N’s photos for the last week. Until Monday (and beyond) I hope you and yours stay safe and well.... Cheers to all, Dave
12.01.2022 Beautiful rain and a green, green Walk. Thanks Mother Nature! Hello all, It has been a while since my last report but times have been busy and many jobs have either been completed or are well on the way. The sandstone garden is only awaiting the planting of Poinsettias when they arrive from Mexico as we have planted the Rosemary and have used existing cuttings and transplants with the Russelia (Firecracker) then it just a matter of top dressing and construction of a watering ...Continue reading
11.01.2022 Hello All. This report covers the last two weeks. The first is Monday 29th July where we had a National MP Ross Vasta, local Brisbane City Councilor, Steve Toomey who is the rep for The Gap and Ferny Grove and a personal friend, also in attendance was the Base Manager, Paul Screan and the Commander 7 Brigade, Jason Blain. It was a convivial morning well attended by Dads’ Army (on good behavior). The reason for the visits to show off the NMW. A while back Ross donated a larg...Continue reading
10.01.2022 A message to the group from Ros and Rod Wyatt Sending all our very best wishes to you and your families for a truly happy, healthy and safe New Year in 2021
08.01.2022 Hello All, Another beautiful but tad cool day in Brisbane as can be seen by the photos courtesy of Rod N. After this week the grass will be a lot greener as we have some very welcome not buckets but consistent showers that will do wonders. Hope the people on the land are benefitting from it. Well I will start off with sick parade. Ron Woodrow is at home and is comfortable. I didn’t get to speak to you Ron however Ivy filled me in and if you are not comfortable lift y...our game because she said you were! Heal well mate. It has only been a week since Trevor Pond had his major operation which turned out to be a bit of a marathon for the surgeon. I spoke to Sandra and she said he has been moved out of the ward and into Re-hab but he is still in la la land because of the diet of very strong painkillers. It is easy for me to say but hang in there Trev, Sandra says things will get better. A new one is Marg Deveraux. Norm rang me and bought me up to date. You may have noticed that Marg has been AWOL for a while. She has a lump in her throat and has been having various tests done and things like chemo and radium have been thrown around. She is now in hospital here in Brisbane (no phone). She is terribly underweight as she can’t eat so they have inserted a tube down her throat and is being fed intravenously. As I said, many a diagnoses but no real prognosis. Norm is travelling as well as can be expected but as long as you don’t overdo it he wouldn’t mind a chat. I just phoned Norm and read this back to him and he is quiet happy with the content. God bless you Marg. Anyway Monday we had a good turn up and everyone was looking for smoko by 0830 with the Walk looking schmick and tidy. We must remember it is not the growing season so all the work that we did over the Covid restrictions in dribs and drabs really paid off. Am really looking forward to this coming Monday because we are hosting many soldiers from both the Battalions and the hierarchy of 7 Bde for a full on work party to continue to enhance the look of the Walk. Make sure you have your camera Rodric! The work on both the walls around the Contemplation Building is progressing at a steady pace and once they are finished then the turf and footpath on the street side and then the concreting of the forecourt around the flagpole it will look the bees knees. A showcase for all soldiers in Gallipoli Barracks will notice. I know I always say it, but, is your mate OK? Stay safe people and as trained RAR men do as we are told with Coronavirus Till next week, regards Dave
07.01.2022 A fine and almost crisp morning for the early starters !
02.01.2022 G’Day All A little bit of winter around especially nights and early morning, however it is near the end of June so is to be expected. Last week I checked the rain gauge and we had 40 mm so must check the tanks because with what we have had sporadically for the year they should be reasonably full. Doug we will work out a sprinkling roster for Diggers’ Rest. Admin wise poor Trevor can’t take a trick he is still in hospital and hopes to be out soon but Sandra, his wife, had a ...Continue reading
01.01.2022 Good Morning All, Admin first, just got off the phone to Ron and Ivy, they are well and Ron is taking things steady and is improving. He also told he has spoken to Margaret and it seems they (her and Kiwi) are ok however she is not great on conversation at the moment and Ron says it is hard to get any news from her except they keep being locked down because of C19. Trevor Pond came in on Monday and fitted a new starter motor to Ken’s red tractor and he seems to be in fine s...Continue reading
