25.01.2022 Are you fit and motivated? You could play a critical role as a Seasonal Firefighting Officer in the ACT Government's bushfire mitigation strategy. Find out more from the ACT Parks and Conservation website.

25.01.2022 A very merry isthmus for Wilsons Prom The Victorian National Parks Association is thrilled to share and celebrate the news that Victoria’s most loved National Park, Wilsons Promontory, is to get some well-deserved TLC, with a a $23 million dollar investment from the state government. The funding will establish a 50,000-hectare biodiversity sanctuary by constructing a predator proof fence to protect the park’s unique and abundant wildlife, including its threatened species. 25.01.2022 Following our local acknowledgement this morning, here is the bigger picture.

24.01.2022 Urgent action needed on peatlands! Peatlands worldwide are running short of water, and the amount of greenhouse gases this could set loose would be devastating for our efforts to curb climate change. https://bit.ly/3vtaFWK

24.01.2022 If you are planning on any outdoor activities this weekend, please find ways to stay cool :) - temperatures in Canberra will be going up to the mid 30s.

23.01.2022 Breaking news! The ACT government will extend cat containment to every suburb, with all new cats to be required to be locked up from 1 July 1 2022. There are currently 17 cat containment suburbs, which include most suburbs in Gungahlin and Molonglo Valley. A free-ranging domestic cat can kill around 75 native animals annually, and domestic and feral cats are a leading cause of at least 20 of Australia's mammal extinctions over the last 200 years (Threatened Species Recovery H...ub). Many cat owners now use outdoor cat runs/enclosures as a means to provide their beloved pets with fresh air and exercise, while protecting native wildlife. #threatenedspecies #endangeredwildlife #wildlifeconservation https://bit.ly/3fqj9sM

21.01.2022 More national parks. The NSW Government has purchased more than 60,000 hectares of land in the far west of the state for a new outback reserve, conserving significant biodiversity and Aboriginal heritage. It’s the second-largest land acquisition in NSW for national parks in the past decade. https://ab.co/3iv8C1n

21.01.2022 Tens of thousands of feral horses continue to be afforded protection in Kosciuszko National Park. On the third anniversary of legislation to protect the horses, the NSW Government needs to start immediate action to significantly reduce their numbers by all suitable humane methods. https://bit.ly/3z5kVHJ Photo by jimmyvandewand. 14.01.2022 Three NPA members completed an 8 km circuit walk at beautiful Nimmo Nature Reserve and Snowy Plain yesterday, visiting three huts and following the Gungarlin River along a meandering course. Cloudy overhead and plenty of snow on the ground.

13.01.2022 This week's joint NPA ACT/BBC/CBC Wednesday walk took in Tidbinbilla Peak and Tidbinbilla Mountain, using a mix of on-track and off track routes. The tough, steep climb from Mountain Creek to the Peak featured wet bracken and fallen tree debris, becoming somewhat dense, "sticky" regrowth from the 2003 fires higher up. The terrific views at the top made it all worthwhile. From Tidbinbilla Peak, the group headed SW along a ridge and up to Tidbinbilla Mountain for more amazing views. Lunch was spent trying to make peace with ubiquitous little black ants that would swarm in response to the slightest movement. From the summit, it was a straightforward - albeit steep - descent down the footpad from Snowy Corner and back to the cars at Mountain Ck. A lovely walk ably led by NPA ACT's Barrie Ridgway. 13.01.2022 This week's joint NPA ACT/CBC/BBC walk visited some rock outcrops to the west of Billy Billy Rocks in Namadgi. Most of this area was badly burnt in the 2020 fires, but there is now quite a bit of regrowth, including the important alpine ash tree species. The views of the Cotter Valley, the Brindabellas and Tidbinbilla from the outcrops were spectacular. Thanks to NPA ACT leader, Phillip G for another great bushwalking adventure! #bushwalking #bushwalkingaustralia #hiking #namadgi #canberra

12.01.2022 ACT Parks and Conservation Service field ecologist, Thea O'Loughlin, shared her tremendous knowledge of - and enthusiasm for - the Territory's critically endangered grassy woodlands with a large group who braved the chilly conditions to join us for a guided nature walk at the Campbell Park (Majura West) reserve area. A home to magnificent Yellow Box and Blakely's Red Gums. We learned about the important corridor of remaining grassy woodlands that extends from Campbell through to Hall, the special flora and fauna that are supported by these woodlands, and ways to help protect them. Thank you Thea for a very interesting, informative and enjoyable outing. If you would like to learn more about the ACT Government's conservation strategy for woodlands, including grassy woodlands, go to: https://bit.ly/3waOyVH
