25.01.2022 FAIL: This is an F shaped recovery for higher education. Who’s going to find the next vaccine?
24.01.2022 531 ACU staff and the NTEU told their university Senate to defer job and pay cuts until management comes to the table with real transparency and proper consultation. VC Greg Craven and DVC Stephen Weller are trying to rush through $42 million in brutal job and pay cuts, just to prop up a huge $46 million surplus. To "prove" they need to cut, they've given staff a single A4 page of finances - showing ACU has over $60 million cash in the bank, over $484 million in reserves, an...d a huge surplus during COVID. ACU staff won't let management put profits before people, use COVID as an excuse to fire over 200 dedicated ACU workers, or slash the pay of those that remain. You can see the text of the senate submission online here: www.nteu.org.au/acu/senate_open_letter
24.01.2022 Today marks the landmark Mabo Decision of Australia’s High Court. It also coincides with the end of National Reconciliation Week. Eddie Mabo worked as a community activist and as a gardener at James Cook University. He was also an activist and union delegate with the Railway workers union. Upon learning that his homeland the island of Mer in the Torres Strait Islands was considered crown land, he rallied to challenge this law and fight for the land rights of his people. He w...on. This was particularly important in debunking the idea of ‘Terra Nullius’ - the idea that Europeans did not invade Australia, that it was ‘land belonging to no one’. Mabo was one of many who paved the way for formal recognition of native title claims in Australia. The struggle for land rights, treaty and justice continues today. We stand with Indigenous activists and workers in their fight for self-determination and recognition.

20.01.2022 #FactCheck: the Government lied about it's so-called "job-ready" graduates package. The real story was a cut to funding across the board. We will continue to campaign for fair uni funding, right until the next election.... https://www.abc.net.au//fact-check-humanities-sc/12822186

15.01.2022 The NTEU today expressed disappointment with the dismissal of its claim in the Federal Court against the University of Sydney’s decision to sack academic staff member Dr Tim Anderson. This case was ultimately about the principles of academic freedom, the right of university staff to express their views about their areas of expertise without fear or favour, even when those views are controversial or unpopular. The outcome of this case highlights that there is effectively no legally enforceable right to academic freedom at the University of Sydney. https://bit.ly/2JejVvB

10.01.2022 Big speech today from Tanya Plibersek defending the life-changing & nation building importance of higher education in Australia. We understand Minister Alan Tudge MP is also due to speak. 09.01.2022 Join NTEU members and Raewyn Connell to talk about what we can do to tackle the state of our universities as union members as we prepare for collective barga...ining and building better workplaces. What do universities actually do now and is it time for a radical change for universities? What is the role of uni staff in ensuring our universities can be driven by social good rather than profit, and help build a fairer workplace and society? How can we organise effectively and bargain successfully to make this happen? When: 1pm (WST) Friday 11 June Where: Zoom Professor Emerita Raewyn Connell, University of Sydney, one of Australia’s leading social scientists, will discuss how universities work, what has happened to them under the corporate regime, and what alternatives there have been in the past and could be in the future. This session will be facilitated by Alison Barnes, NTEU National Tertiary Education Union President.
