25.01.2022 Amazing MEREDITH QUINLAN,the ultra marathon runner, who just travelled on the national trail from the qld boarder down to the victorian boarder 1500 km in 21 days! CONGRATULATIONS

25.01.2022 It has come to our attention that the National Parks website is saying that the trail is closed Jenolan Caves to Widden Valley. When I investigated the Wallerawang to Widden Valley part of the trail on the website it basically said the trail is closed because of Covid! For those that follow this page closely you will know that this is not true. See our pinned post about that. The Glen Alice trail is closed until 2nd August because of pest management and when I spoke to a loca...l ranger he informed me the Crown's creek trail is closed because of fire damage to all the creek crossings for a couple of weeks. (That is not on their website). The lesson is do your own homework, contact the section coordinator and register your trek! The section being talked about is Guidebook 9 maps 4-10. Grassy mountain hut is still standing but has one post burnt which will have to be repaired. See more

25.01.2022 Not only can you read the current Tracks Magazine online, but now you can browse right back to 2009! Take a look!

24.01.2022 Finding BNT markers can be a challenge!

24.01.2022 More updates on the Trail..I'm summarizing from "Tracks" magazine which you get if you become a member. Guidebook 6 Killarney to Blackbutt in southern Queensland is good to go and so is Guidebook 3 Collinsville to Kabra in mid North Queensland. You can become a member here..https://www.bicentennialnationaltrail.com.au//bnt-members/

24.01.2022 Thanks folks for sharing this post so far and wide! We have now found several terrific candidates and are now contacting them. Thank you! *********** We are l...ooking for someone in NEW SOUTH WALES who owns and operates a Bullock Team & Dray to potentially appear in a short film. Both the dray and bullocks MUST BE 1860's style. Paid work. Please Private Message us here if you know someone. Thanks!!! See more

23.01.2022 SPIDERS You will see many. At night if you look out with a headlamp you will see hundreds of blue eyes. They are hunting spiders mostly wolf spiders. They ...can bite draw blood but are not venomous. In Australia we have funnelwebs the most venomous, trapdoors, widows, orbs, St Andrews cross, daddy long legs, tarantulas, white tailed spider, huntsman, and jumping spiders being the most known. Some can kill you(funnelweb) some just give a very nasty painfall bite (Redback spider) some are harmless to humans. When riding in the bush you will encounter big spider webs across the track these are usually made by the Orb family. They are not a venomous spider and will dash away and hide but the web will stick to you if you ride through it. A spider of the bush to be wary about is the northern rivers funnelweb. It lives in trees, hollow logs etc. They are very large.i have included photos and info in this post. They are not commonly seen.

23.01.2022 https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/park-alerts/ For those in Queensland some national parks are opening from tomorrow 12pm. Just a reminder you are only allowed to travel within a 50K radius of your home. Some good news!

23.01.2022 Woo hoo! The National Trail in Guy Fawkes National Park will re open on the 25th June. Please note that parts of Guy Fawkes is still closed but the trail which has been closed since the fires will reopen. Here's the link. Go the the 3rd paragraph. https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au//guy-faw/local-alerts

22.01.2022 You will see this on the trail. One of my favourite places

22.01.2022 A community BBQ was held in Omeo yesterday to thank Papua New Guinea soldiers and engineers who have been working alongside our Australian Defence Force personnel in response to the Victorian bushfires in the Omeo area over recent weeks. We appreciate your efforts, thank you! #WeWorkAsOne

22.01.2022 A notice from Jenny Costin one of our Section Coordinators: Guide book 11. Map3 Be aware! Tantangara Road has long vehicles with trailers travelling at speed to and from the Snowy 20 works to just before Tantangara Dam. The BNT up the power lines track is still recovering (or not) after the bushfire in January 2020.... Horse riders don't be tempted to use the Tantangara Rd instead of the powerline trail. No choice for cyclists its terrain is not suited. It is very dangerous having experienced it driving and cycling along Tantangara Rd, having to cycle the gauntlet between Nungar Creek fire trail and Wares campsite before quickly getting to the road gutter and being covered with dust with a truck not slowing down. There would be no chance for horse riders to get off the road in time or the trucks to slow down or stop suddenly. If you are driving in with floats to a two way radio channel info is displayed at Snowy Mountains Highway turnoff to warn trucks and pilot car to stop of your approach. Vehicle access on Tantangara Rd from Snowy Mountains highway is changing in 2021. Wares is open to campers walking in. See more

22.01.2022 Wow Jackie Mann. Thanks so much for this.

22.01.2022 Please note that the National Trail in Victoria is closed until further notice.

22.01.2022 This weekend, we were afforded the privilege of attending a Munro Tramway Historical Group Inc. meeting at Perseverance Hall near Ravensbourne, via Esk-Hampton ...Road. Our goal was to discuss with the group how the historic & publicly opened sections of the Munro Tramway Rail Trail could be linked up to the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT) in the future. Many options are possible, including National Park walking tracks through Ravensbourne National Park/Deongwar State Forest via South Street, Esk to Hampton. There are of course, the multiple links that tie in with The National Trail through the districts/townships of Ravensbourne, Palmtree, Perseverance, Hampton & Crows Nest. Esk-Hampton Road is built through the former Tramline's corridor at Bunker's Hill & remains a crossroads for The National Trail, the TRC Bird Trail to Ravensbourne Falls & a trail to an old gold mine. After The National Trail passes through Esk-Hampton Road, it then winds north via Kipper Creek/Esk-Crows Nest Road & up Nukku/Blackbutt way. There is the potential at Nukku to link down into the Munro Tramway Rail Trail via The National Trail, but there could be another potential link via Tuites Lane/Morden Road to Toogoolawah. Sadly, the entire Munro Tramway Rail Trail corridor is not publicly accessible, with swathes of the formation lying within private property boundaries. The orange highlighted sections in the attached map denotes the publicly accessible sections of the Tramway Trail. The historical route follows the old timber tramway network that A&D Munro Company constructed in the late 1890's & early 1900's to service their logging & milling operations in the Hampton, Perseverance & Ravensbourne areas of southeast Queensland. The original tramway route is mostly on private property with only four sections accessible to the public: The Great Short Walk, Perseverance Reserve, Ravensbourne Sports Ground (where the Shay Loco is on display) & Bunkers Hill. The Munro Tramway Historical Group have done a wonderful job assembling the Shay Loco that is on display at Ravensbourne Rest Area & working with Toowoomba Regional Council to erect signage & open up a lot of the publicly accessible Tramway route within this vicinity. This spot is currently undergoing a major upgrade & bitumised carparks will soon be unveiled for motorist convenience. We will continue working with the Historical Group & with our friends from Bushwalking Queensland Inc. to actualise links with interconnecting trail & track networks with the BVRT & will forward our suggestions to both TMR & TRC. Please see below links of our previous visits to the historic Munro Tramway & Shay Loco, & further information: https://www.facebook.com/BrisbaneValleyRailTrail/posts/2096115923798031 https://www.facebook.com/media/set/ https://munrotramway.wixsite.com/mthg https://www.tr.qld.gov.au//palmtree-munro-tramway-historic

22.01.2022 Eliza Allan who did the trail in 2016 has set up a new website saddletrampers.com for all you horse trekkers out there. Have a look!

21.01.2022 I know the virus has stopped a lot of treks but if anyone has anything to contribute to the magazine please let Roger know

21.01.2022 We are about to start a new group related to the trail where you can ask questions or share experiences. In the meantime, does anybody have some helpful advice?

21.01.2022 The BNT board like to ask you to complete a short (5-10 minute) online survey to gather your views on formally changing the Trail name, and consequently the logo, and moving to digital mapping as we review and revise our current maps. We would also like an indication of how you use the Trail. Please click on the following link to complete our anonymous survey. The survey will be open until the end of April, so please make the time to do it soon. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LM3D3Z6 If you would like to provide any more general comments to the Board about the National Trail, please feel free to send us an email. [email protected] All the best and please take care of each other.

19.01.2022 It is now recommended that trekkers follow their own State's recommendations for regional and interstate travel and whether camping is allowed. It is best of course to contact the section coordinator of the area of trail you wish to travel to check out the condition of trail especially that affected by the bushfires.

19.01.2022 Next Monday I will start a road trip from Cowra to Forbes with my bullocks and cover wagon ,mule, camels , ponies and grandkids . If any of you old bushies want to pull up and say g-ay your welcome . BYO horse, swag, stump, rum panican .

17.01.2022 A memory from Marianne Creese-Kranenburg and Fraser Creese from their epic trip last year

17.01.2022 What a great way to start a trip on the National Trail!

17.01.2022 In this time of Covid-19 where we are not allowed to trek, I thought it would be good to share books that we have read or want to read of people doing the National Trail. One book which I'm about to read is Liz Bryon's The Only Way Home.. "It is story of Liz Byron’s 2004 BNT trek from Cooktown to Mount Perry with her two donkeys, Grace and Charley, is now available in a new Woodslane Press publication, The Only Way Home. It was a rite of passage to mark leaving 40 years of ...marriage and embarking on life as a single woman at the age of 61. Liz foresaw that self-reliance, physical stamina and route-finding would be challenges, but couldn’t have known how the outback environment in Queensland was to test her to the limit. An extended drought had left much of her route a dusty wasteland, without food or water for her animals. Years of suffering from childhood abuse and a family tragedy had left her unwilling to ask for help. Walking became a meditation, an exercise in being in the moment even when that moment was 43 degrees or she hadn’t eaten for 7 hours. In her moving memoir, Liz reveals how she healed herself step-by-step on the way to her new home in northern NSW by learning to trust her intuition, the wisdom of her animals and the kindness of strangers. Illustrated with delightful sketches of the donkeys, the book is available at bookstores and online booksellers (RRP $25), or you can buy it as an ebook. But if you are interested in supporting Liz, you can purchase a signed copy at https://lizbyron.com/ for $22 plus $10 shipping. " See more

17.01.2022 Our first ever trek! My sister (walking) and I went down along the BNT from Georges Junction. It was harder going than expected and we had a few mishaps so jus...t ended up going down and back instead of through but it was AMAZING! I can see now what everyone has raved about and how people get addicted! If in doubt, just get out there and have a go! We were well under-prepared due to nearly constant rain over summer and the horses were very unfit and fresh but they really stepped up and were incredible. See more

16.01.2022 It was good to see so much water but made the crossing look very difficult.

16.01.2022 Our own chairman of the board is on the trail

16.01.2022 Ben Cianchi has already run across Tasmania, kayaked across Bass Strait and now is cycling from Wilson's Promotory to Cape York a lot of it on the Trail. Have a look.

15.01.2022 Section 8 Ebor to Aberdeen is closed due to snow and wind.

15.01.2022 I have just finished Liz Bryon's book "The Only Way Home" and this is my review: "As a person passionate about the Bicentennial Trail and having ridden it in NSW I am always keen to read about other’s adventures. Liz trekked the length of Queensland with donkeys and I found it fascinating to read her account. Like a lot who trek for a decent amount of time, Liz shared and worked through her traumatic past. I appreciated her honesty and the way she wove it into her travels. I particularly liked the way she explained the way to work with and the characteristics of the donkeys. I was sorry to finish the book and want to wish her all the best for her future. Another trip perhaps?" Anyone else read it? Please comment.

15.01.2022 Just a reminder that our pinned post says that the trail is closed. We had an inquiry recently re Guidebook 7 and the Guy Fawkes area is definitely closed.

14.01.2022 Just one example of how members can be involved. Great effort guys! https://www.parks.vic.gov.au//work-in-remote-areas-the-old

13.01.2022 It looks like Donna is a horse rider. Does anyone know the area up there well? @Marianne creese-kranenburg

13.01.2022 The National Trail and Centenary Trail intersect a number of times. Section co-ordinator Jenny Costin often refers hikers to the Centenary as a good alternative for hikers.

13.01.2022 This was a beautiful spot on the Trail.

12.01.2022 How are you planning to Trek? Young and old have taken to the Trail with many forms of transport! You can find their stories in past Tracks magazines on the website.

12.01.2022 Please note there is no longer a blanket closure of the trail. Please bear with us as we gather information from the section coordinators and local knowledge. 10.01.2022 The Sandy Creek Centre has replaced the old Forestry Camp found on Map 4/5 on Guidebook 5. Ross is keen to support the trail and has asked to book in advance as he has a lot of groups using it. It is $6 a person

10.01.2022 Another beautiful trek in the Guy Fawkes- Newton Boyd to Ebor section of the BNT

08.01.2022 I’m not sure how well this works when no signal, but useful nonetheless. I really recommend the Emergency Plus App. You just press on it and it gives you the option of pressing on 3 numbers - 000, SES, or police. Just tap whichever one and it calls them. Also, it gives you the exact address you are at (very helpful for me - half the time I don’t even know what town I am in or near let alone the street name ). It also gives the latitude and longitude of your location AND a map of where you are. It has been a great comfort to know I have this in an emergency.

08.01.2022 This is affecting the trail

08.01.2022 A book about Alienor Le Gouvello’s adventures on the trail will be coming out soon.

08.01.2022 BNT Trivia question Can anyone name this marker location along the BNT ?

08.01.2022 Copied advice re shoes, with permission from original author Mark Roberts This is probably a good place to share this about shoes. I was an athletic sports shoe industrial product designer for eight years. Let me share some info that can be of help. All shoes are built on/around different shaped lasts (forms). Each manufacturer uses their own lasts. You first need to identify which last matches your foot shape and volume the best. Notice I added volume. Then you are...Continue reading

07.01.2022 As it stands NSW and Queensland members are able to trek within their state. Please if you are planning a trek, become a member, buy the guidebooks and register your trek. The last step is very important as many parts of the trail is closed due to bushfire damage. Stay safe!

06.01.2022 Not just yet but for those of us in NSW this is another thing we can do to keep safe. Obviously if you do the trail as a member you submit your trip as well and the section Coordinaters know you are passing through

05.01.2022 Section Coordinator Glenn Joiner caught up with National Trail chairman Neil Ward and his partner Jane, at Mt Howitt. Neil and Jane are trekking with horses from Healesville to the border.

05.01.2022 This is one of my favourite areas of the trail. It is currently closed and not just because of the virus. The bushfire damage is extensive so it is encouraging to see photos like this

04.01.2022 An interesting and informative look at the Trail. Now we can see why Section 12 is so challenging!!!

04.01.2022 There is a new group called Bicentennial Trail Trekkers. It is for those interested in the trail for questions advice and sharing experiences. It is a private group so you will have to apply to join but please join us!

03.01.2022 Anyone who has anything to publish in our magazine please send to Roger ASAP

03.01.2022 Guy Fawkes River National Park is closed because of bushfire damage. We will let you know as soon as it opens. When planning a trek the map will tell you if the trail goes through a national park. Have a look at the alerts to see if it affects you.

03.01.2022 As we already know State Borders between Victoria, NSW and Queensland are open which means the trail is open. Of course always check with the Section Coordinators of the area you are planning to trek

03.01.2022 We have changed our name from the Bicentennial National Trail to just The National Trail. We had our AGM this morning via Zoom (it was supposed to be in Canberra :( ) and this was a resolution that was passed. The Logo will be the same with the word Bicentennial taken off.

02.01.2022 Thinking of a National Trail Adventure? This calendar might be a great place to start.

02.01.2022 If you go to this link there is a PDF file of all NSW State Forests indicating whether they are open or closed

02.01.2022 SOLD Thanks everyone for your interest. FOR SALE "Blossom" an 11 year old pack horse. An ideal candidate to travel the length of the trail.... "Blossom" is 11 years old, about 14.2 hh, and has done several trips mainly as a pack horse, usually in the mountains and occasionally ridden. Her last trip was in 2019 for 18 days in the rivers of Northern Victoria. Easy to float, she's an exceptionally good doer, cast iron constitution, has excellent feet (never been shod, as hoof boots used on front feet if track is very rocky) and a fast walker. She has coarse hair and skin, and never been galled or marked. If I was doing the entire BNT again, I'd take her. Asking $1500." Blossom is not an old plodder for someone to ride and get their confidence back. She's for the serious long distance trekker. I don't have to sell her, so it's important to me that a new owner would use her to her full potential. I've ridden the BNT myself, 30 years ago, but I only do short pack trips now which the average saddle horse can manage. She will be an asset if I can connect her with the right trekker. Please PM Sharon Roberts or email her on [email protected] Hopefully this mare can give somebody a wonderful adventure on the trail.

02.01.2022 Advice please - are these panniers hanging too low? I feel like they are

02.01.2022 Betina Bendall would like to buy a 2nd hand decker pack saddle. Please email her on [email protected] Bendall would like to buy a 2nd hand decker pack saddle. Please email her on [email protected]
