29.01.2022 I've gone IoT! OK, IoT is Internet of Things, technical definition from Wikipedia...'is the interconnection of uniquely identifiable embedded computing devices within the existing Internet infrastructure.' There are lots of ways to connect sensors, relays, devices etc to the Internet, or just your local network. IoT devices can be simple control relays, to sensors that upload data to Cloud based server platforms.... Just starting small, I tested an Arduino Yun to control an auto door. The Yun publishes a web page to the local network, this allows anyone on a browser to control the door. You can open or close the door, or also use an auto open, wait and then close the door. The time delay is adjustable from 0 - 100 seconds. The web site also updates the open/close status a couple of times a second. All works well! Design an enclosure in Inventor and sent to the 3D printer. Job Done!

22.01.2022 iPad control from RTI processor (or iPhone, just smaller)

22.01.2022 Cool things with C-Bus #07 - AV / Scenes / Logic integration I have run through a few cool things with C-Bus to give you an overview. Now it’s time to put some of the things together - INTEGRATION!! In C-Bus we have scenes that are usually triggered from a wall switch. Here’s some scenes that I use at my place... At the front door is a DLT switch with a few scenes on it. Two are ‘Welcome’ and ‘Entertain’. Both scenes send a trigger to the C-Bus Touch Screen. The logic picks up the trigger, then has a look at the time of day. If its dark (based on sunrise and sunset) then lights are turned on. The trigger is also sent to the RTI processor. The Welcome scene triggers the TV to turn on, selects the set-top-box input on the amp, HDMI input on the television and resets the amp volume to a pre-set level. In a single button the house is set! It is much the same with the ‘Entertain’ scene. The light levels are different but the C-Bus response is similar. The AV control from the RTI processor is a little different however. This scene selects the Sonos input on the amp, ensures that Sonos is playing and preset the volume. And we have music playing through the living areas for gusests to feel welcome. One button! This is what we mean but Integration and Home Automation. Getting the systems installed to do the work for you. Could your home do with a little control?

21.01.2022 RTI Control System Offer Update The first system from our RTI SURFiR and controller package offer was installed this afternoon! Ya!! All went well and now the owners can operate the system easily and reliably. The system ended up with Austar, Blu-Ray player and Set-top-box being sent to the television. All functions are on the signle buttons at the top of the remote. Press the 'Austar' button and the TV turns on, the correct input is selected and the buttons change to Austar ...functions. The Set top box (dual turner recording type) operates the same way. The Blu-Ray is similar but adds power on commands for the Blu-Ray player. The Austar and set top box are always on, so no need for power commands. System done! Had a though while doing the system, for the same price, I can use your existing iPad or iPhone to control your your AV system. It will need an Ethernet outlet available for the controller and WiFi coverage to the area. But you can have iPad touch screen controls for $990! If needed I can provide WiFi networks to add if you need them. The screen shots are a sample from my iPad control to give you an idea.

20.01.2022 Cool things with C-Bus #08 - AV / Scenes / Logic integration Bedroom This time scenes from the bedroom. When entering the bedroom at night, there is a scene 'Goodnight'. This makes sure that the living area lights are off, the blinds are down and the living room and cinema audio systems are off. It also turns on lighting in the passages to the bedroom and turns on the bedroom bedhead and side light to a low level. The scene is also on the switch at the entry door for when you... leave the living room. Everything ready to get into bed. At the bedroom door is a 'Leave' scene that I use in the morning. This scene makes sure the kitchen blind is up and turns on kitchen lighting if its dark (based on sunrise time). Heres the lazy bit, it turns on the living room plasma and audio system, presets the volume, switches it to television and alters the TV channel so I can watch Sunrise while cooking. Yep, its lazy, but hey, isnt that what control systems are for? At the bedhead is a usual 'Shutdown' that effectively turns off the whole house so we can go to sleep without anything on. In case there are guests who are staying after a few to many wines, there is also a scene that turns everything off except the spare bedroom and its ensuite.

20.01.2022 XBMC On Raspberry Pi While waiting for the relays I had a play around with running XBMC media centre on the Raspberry Pi. I loaded the operating system onto a separate SD Card so I can swap its functions easily. Its pretty good really. Ok it was a little slow if it was trying to index all the movies files and confirm cover art and those things. But it doesn't have to do those things regularily so pretty happy.... The only thing that is a little disappointing is that the Pi won't play back a DVD ISO file, only a VIDEO_TS structure. Other than that, its good, have a try! http://xbmc.org/about/

14.01.2022 Cool things with C-Bus - Interfaces One of the great things with C-Bus is its ability to interface with other systems. The older style RS-232 and newer IP communication protocols allow C-Bus to talk to a great variety of devices and systems. The most common interface I use is a two way control to and from RTI remote control systems. The interface allows our audio visual system to control all of the lights and other devices on C-Bus. It also allows triggering of audio visual ...commands from C-Bus. This allows for a proper integrated control system. Other interfaces are available for things like... - air conditioners - pool controllers - web control systems - security panels - DALI lighting control - DMX lighting control - BACNet air conditioning - LonWorks - Crestron controls - lots lots more C-Bus can truly be used as the heart of a true home and building automation and control system.

08.01.2022 Cool things with C-Bus #09 - AV / Scenes / Logic integration Bathroom / Ensuite What can be done with C-Bus and Audio Visual in the Bathroom? Well a fair bit, some things you might not expect. At home I have a motion sensor in the bathroom, it picks up when someone is in there. From there a whole pile of programming kicks in. The touch screen looks at the time of day, or night. In the daytime the lights come on to a high light level so you can see properly. If it’s late, the ...lights only come on to a dim level so it’s not too bright. During the day and evening the music from Sonos and C-Bus Multi Room Audio turns on automatically. The volume decreases late in the night. The exhaust fan also automatically turns on if you have been in there for a certain amount of time. Of course all the electrical buts turn themselves off after you leave the room. All of these settings, the light levels, timers, volume levels and times can all be adjusted from the touch screen. There are a few other nice little things. If you have a bath (unfortunately I don’t!) and don’t want all the automatic things to happen, turning on and off, simply adjust the main room light to the required level and all the automatic timers drop out. They do of course turn themselves back on after you leave then room. Would you like Home Automation Please give me a call. I can do this for your home too.

02.01.2022 PSB Speakers and really good manuals! PSB Speakers are the main focus of the audio display... coming soon! PSB have been reviewed very highly; for all models in the range. They are also very reasonably piced for their performance level.... I was having a read of the installation manuals (yes, someone does actually read them). I was very pleasently surprised and rather impressed by the information that is presented in the manual. It is the first speaker manual (with the exception of very high end professional monitors) that provides good and acurate information on how to locate, set up and get the most from the speaker. There is some very good information in the manual. It is a short version of what I do for a calibration following the Home Acoustics Alliance procedures. Just goes to show you should read them! Only a quick listen so far, so wait for a full review. Have a look.... http://www.psbspeakers.com/

01.01.2022 Project update - Its alive! Well the project on the Raspberry Pi is up and running. Web interface to the iPhone is going. I have included some logic to turn on the stair lights is any other light is one - it all works! The output relay arrived yesterday. Played around with the board and an interface IC from Adafruit. Didn't work so good; the output was inverted from the control. Turn on and the output turns off. Ok, I could swap the contacts on the relay over but I like the L...ED on the crcuit board to match the light output. So I changed the interface relay for a simple ULN2003 Darlington Array chip. Perfect! Direct driven relays from an iPhone. Project cost: Raspberry Pi - $36.00 Micro USB Power supply lead - $8.00 26 PIN ribbon lead - $2.95 Pi Cobble breakout - $7.95 ULN2003 IC chip - $3.00 8 channel relay card - $8.00 Mounting box (allowance) - $16.00 Wires (laying around) Research and programming time (lets not worry about that bit) Total cost for 8 channels of iPhone controlled relays for lighting $82.90 I think thats pretty good!! Very happy. Next to to house it all and make it safe and solder up a circuit board. Now for a few more channels and a touch screen wall switch...
