25.01.2022 Today is happy release day... Ronnie who has seen a bit of the state in his young life. He's been to Healesville Sanctuary and Nature Parks on Phillip Island.. Got a call yesterday saying he was ready to go He is best to learn to be wild in the wild . Good luck Ronnie and stay out of trouble

24.01.2022 Please ensure masks are disposed of properly... This is the next problem we are going to see with our Wildlife...

23.01.2022 So this little guy I named Roy, sadly Roy didn’t make it and had to be pts, ffs people if you hit and animal please check it out likely it’s injured. I’d say Roy had been injured for days before I got the call to go see if I could find him, after a few hours I did. And a massive thank you to the Churchill police for coming out to put him out of his misery, but not before we shared some time together, he had a drink of water then slept beside me. There’s no excuse for this type of thing

22.01.2022 It’s twins! A Koala up here in the Strathbogie Ranges with two babies! Thanks for capturing this special moment Roz.

21.01.2022 A roo grieves it’s dead mate, who along with her joey, was hit by a car and left to die. All animals feel emotional pain, loss and grief. Please consider that.

21.01.2022 Just to let those know who helped with this rescue He made it to Healsville Sanctuary and unfortunately after speaking to them today they made the decision to put him to sleep. Thank you to those who helped us help him.

21.01.2022 Just got an update from Healesville Sanctuary on Ronnie who we moved to them nearly 2 weeks ago And they were checking if it would be OK if we picked him up from Phillip Island Nature Parks where they have better flight avairies of course we said yes So excited to see this video

20.01.2022 Yesterday the Murray Bridge girl woke up and walked straight up to me and rested her head between my feet. In that moment, she was telling me that we knew each ...other. Clare and I went through as many pics of our released wombats that we could find and she didn't have a nose patch match until Clare remembered Porky. Porky was rescued and released in 2010. Ten years later, she is home From that moment on, she is behaving like she has always lived here, even trying to get into my bed! She remembers us Porky was an adult when she briefly stayed with us so she is over 15 years old which is a great innings for a wild wombat! Porky somehow found her way home and here she will stay We will start introducing Porky back to her old nurse wombats in the next few weeks and she will join them out in the sanctuary shortly. Welcome home darling girl! See more

20.01.2022 Today is National Threatened Species Day. An annual memorial on the anniversary of the death of the last Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger), in order to raise awarenes...s for Australian wildlife currently facing extinction. This year, we turn our attention to the Mountain Pygmy Possum. Sadly, our little mate is no stranger to extinction, having already thought to have been extinct until its rediscovery in 1966! They are the only Australian mammal to live exclusively in alpine regions, hibernating for up to 7 months under the snow covered boulder regions of VIC and NSW, until emerging in spring to breed and raise their young. With a gestation period of only two weeks and a lifespan of up to 12 years in females (the longest known lifespan of any small terrestrial mammal!), it’s hard to fathom that these guys are critically endangered. However, the sad reality is that even with these advantages the threat of habitat destruction, rising temperatures, predation by feral species such as foxes and cats is contributing to their population decrease, with an estimation of less than 2000 remaining in the wild. In particular, light pollution is a significant threat to the possums' main food source, the Bogong Moth. The moth’s migration down south is impacted by the light source from major cities, meaning fewer moths reach the Pygmy Possums’ habitat. A small way that you can help is simply by turning off all unnecessary lights overnight! You can also contribute to Zoos Victoria's campaign to figure out where all the moths are getting lost on their migration through the alpine areas by recording sightings of Bogong Moths in this handy moth tracker: https://www.swifft.net.au/mothtracker/ The Pygmy Possums pictured in this post were reported to our Emergency Response Service, where they were put into care with authorised wildlife carers for a successful release back into their natural habitat.

18.01.2022 Remember Ross, the retired musician from Olinda, Victoria who formed an unbelievable connection with Little Deer? In a heartfelt interview with Ranges Trader Ma...il, Ross spoke about his wonderful companionship with his deer friend and why he called Vets For Compassion for help after she began showing signs of illness. Dr. Elaine also shares more details about the callout that touched the entire Vets For Compassion team, and why it was so important for her, Dr. Chris and volunteer rescuer Jacob to lay Little Deer to rest in a spot where Ross could continue to visit her. Thank you Ranges Trader Mail for the wonderful write up and for supporting Vets For Compassion! 17.01.2022 Did you know that echidnas have toothless jaws? Yep, that’s right! Instead of teeth, they have a long slender beak, armed with a 15cm long sticky tongue that th...ey use to crush their food up against hard pads on the roof of their mouth! Echidnas love to feed on invertebrates including ants, worms and insect larvae and can eat up to around 40,000 per day pretty cool, huh!! #bonorongwildlifesanctuary #bonorong #monotreme #randallthethreeleggedechidna #echidna

07.01.2022 It is not too often that I have the privilege of caring for a juvenile Powerful Owl. What an amazing team effort to save this bird. Dave at Wildlife Victoria t...o take the initial calls and information required, Sarah and Simon for doing transport and Tanya for her volunteer vet nursing skills. We believe this lovely, young bird may have come to grief on a barbed wire fence. He sustained multiple injuries including a lacerated chest wound, a bloody beak from a hole through the lower mandible and a fractured leg. He is now at Healesville Sanctuary and is undergoing surgery today. Fingers crossed for full recovery. Powerful Owls are the largest species of owl in Australia. They are excellent hunters, mainly catching possums and gliders, but they will also catch bats, birds and large insects. They are often seen roosting during the day with their prey, waking up to snack on it and guarding it from other predators. Powerful owls mate for life and they both help to raise the chicks with the male doing most of the hunting in the initial stages. Powerful Owls are a threatened species in Victoria.. Their numbers are dropping particularly with the loss of old growth trees where they require the natural hollows for nesting. See more

06.01.2022 We can all work to reduce the use of plastic and discard rubbish properly so that there is a lower chance of it harming our wildlife! Do you love fishing? Did... you know that we are frequently called to rescue birds who have become entangled in fishing line. Please make sure discarded line is not left in open bins or along shorelines. See more

02.01.2022 Now this is sharing with the Wildlife I love this so much

02.01.2022 This little cranky blue tongue really got me thinking yesterday about just how damaging misinformation about our wildlife is I received a call to come and re...move this blue tongue from inside a house, I arrived to a household full of terrified people In my eyes all I saw was a very scared little blue tongue that wasn’t very thrilled about being in a house with multiple large predators In the eyes of my customers, due to stories and incorrect facts they have heard over the years, this was an animal capable of causing serious harm to themselves and their pets. When we tell stories about Wildife ie. snakes chase you, lizards have venom, blue tongues keep snakes away, eagles carry off lambs, we can unintentionally (or mind blowlingly, intentionally) cause unnecessary fear and stress to others and in a lot of cases, injury or death to our wildlife So please if you have questions around our wildlife please ask a professional, not Joe blow at the pub Blue tongues are beautiful little harmless lizards, but if they’re scared, they will hiss and carry on, because in their mind, their life depends on it!
