25.01.2022 Australian stingless bees (Tetragonula carbonaria) collecting pollen from Petchoa flowers.

25.01.2022 This is a Blue Flower Wasp (Scolia verticalis) These solitary wasps dig beneath the surface of the soil or mulch to find grubs and beetle larvae to lay an egg on. Their larva then consume the host and eventually emerge as adults after pupation. The adult wasps feed on nectar, like bees.

21.01.2022 Swamp Mahogany (Eucalyptus robusta) I made this using some offcuts from a swamp mahogany burl I've been working with. #australiantimber #woodgrain #recycling #scrapwood

12.01.2022 It's great to see our Austroplebeia australis colonies taking advantage of the warmer weather we've been experiencing this winter. This is a rescued log colony bringing home a little bit of pollen.

10.01.2022 Yakisugi / Shou Sugi Ban Stingless Beehives. I made a few of these experimental Yakisugi/ Shou Sugi Ban style hives for our Austroplebeia species. They are a two piece vertical split hive with internal brood support frames, a viewing window and a weatherproof lid. All of the hardware and fixings are stainless steel. The timber (radiata pine) is sealed with a marine grade varnish after receiving a carbonisation treatment and being brushed back to achieve a three tone weathere...d and aged look. Each hive is unique and has its own character and charm. I didn't make these hives for sale I just made them for our future rescues, displays and propagation activities.

09.01.2022 Happy World Bee Day!

07.01.2022 Here we can see a symbiosis between the Australian stingless bee (Tetragonula carbonaria) and a species of fungus we have found on their resin/ propolis deposits.

06.01.2022 Tetragonula carbonaria resin art. These images show that a relationship seems to be occurring between Tetragonula carbonaria and a mysterious fungus that is fruiting from the resin they have placed around the ventilation hole in their hive.

04.01.2022 Australian Stingless Bee/ Fungus symbiosis. Earlier this year at Native Bee Care we discovered what appears to be the reproductive stage of a fungus growing from the resin deposits on a number of our rescued stingless bee hives. (Tetragonula carbonaria) After sharing our images of the fungus we were approached by a stingless bee researcher at a local university here in Queensland requesting samples. We have sent away multiple samples and we are eagerly awaiting the scientific... analysis/ identification of the fungus. Hopefully this observation and further research can help to shed some light on the relationships between Australian stingless bees and their associated organisms. #savethebees #mycology #symbiosis #citizenscience

02.01.2022 Australian Red Cedar Display Hive I made this vertical observation hive for a colony of Austroplebeia australis stingless bees. All of the hardware is stainless steel and the timber is finished with tung oil then a homemade beeswax polish. The base is removable and holds a honey sampling tray.
