23.01.2022 Koalas will seek watering points in addition to the water they derive from eucalypt foliage especially during drought and heat wave events. Retaining koala fodder trees near creeks, rivers and dams, controlling wild dogs and creating wildlife corridors helps protect koalas on rural land. #nativebiotaruralecology #ruralrevegetation #koalaconservation

22.01.2022 Next generation paddock trees. Protecting seedling trees with heavy duty guards until they can withstand browsing and rubbing by livestock is what it's all about.

14.01.2022 Propagating some understorey species today. Acacia vestita, a lovely weeping form of wattle and Indigofera australis the native indigo. Both valuable additions to revegetation plantings for pollinator fodder, small bird habitat and low wind shelter. Remember to heat treat seeds of native legume family plants to initiate germination.

13.01.2022 The restorative power of the Australian bush, Melaleuca quinquinervia, Broad Leaved Paperbark showing a massive regeneration event after the Summer bushfires. Salt Water National Park, mid north coast NSW. #ecologicalrestoration #nativebiotaruralecology

13.01.2022 Check out this wonderful resource all about regional ecology and agriculture with papers by fellow ecologists Cilla Kinross, David Goldney and Barb McTaggart. Spotted in Collins Booksellers Orange. #ruralecology #conservationonfarms #nativebiotaruralecology

11.01.2022 We are participating in this year's Aussie Backyard Bird Count in Native Biotas home garden in Clifton Grove, near Orange. Are you counting too ? Just 20 mins per day helps gain valuable information about our Aussie Backyard Birds. Be a part of citizen science as well as come to appreciate the importance of backyard native bird habitat as 'stepping stone' habitat. I for one have a new found appreciation for shaded bird baths as being highly frequented in our native bush garden. Visit aussiebirdcount.org.au #aussiebackyardbirdcount #nativebiotaruralecology

10.01.2022 The precious shrub layer showing how valuable the mid storey is for bird nesting habitat. Seen during a recent Site Inspection in a Red Stringybark ( Eucalyptus macrorhyncha ) Forest with a significant grazing history. Even though Native Blackthorn ( Bursaria spinosa ) exists on the property it is of low abundance. In this case the nesting bird has had to make do with an exotic woody weed, Firethorn (Pyracantha). We endeavour in our Vegetation Planning work to raise awareness of native understorey plants and the urgent need to conserve and increase them on rural properties. #wholepropertytreeplan #ruralrevegetation#sustainabiltyeducator #treeplanforyourfarm

09.01.2022 Happy horse loggers. #sustainableforestry #farmforestry

04.01.2022 Thinking of fencing? Then spare a thought for Sugar Gliders which being nocturnal can be hooked on barb wire during flight. A plain top wire or plain wire with electric outrigger is more Sugar Glider friendly.

04.01.2022 For a star performer windbreak species on medium to high quality sites you can't go past sheoaks, Casuarina cunninghamiana. Much favoured as a horticultural windbreak since they fix nitrogen and are not highly crop competitive. Their fine needle like foliage is highly effective at reducing wind speed. #nativebiotaruralecology #windbreakdesigner #ruralextension

02.01.2022 By planting Casuarina cunninghamiana ( River Sheoak ) and Banksias ( Banksia marginata and Banksia integrifolia ) you can help increase the feeding resource for these magnificent birds. #ruralrevegetation #biodiversityplantings #farmtreeplan

01.01.2022 Mini mountains of Pyracantha cut, stump painted and windowed today to make way for rural property biodiversity plantings of Acacia, Melaleuca, Casuarina, Themeda, Lomandra and Callistemon. #wildlifeonfarms #ruralrevegetation #nativebiotaruralecology

01.01.2022 Favourite February photo of Ash the orphaned wombat joey, my shoulder bag field companion whilst helping with WIRES wildlife food and water drops to the Gospers Mountain firegrounds, Lithgow.
