25.01.2022 Now this is a pretty solid Maccas run! A tagged Macquarie perch recently recaptured has been on quite the adventure over 3 years, according to our mates at... the Arthur Rylah Institute. Keith Martin recently reeled in this Macca while fishing Lake Dartmouth. He recorded the number of the tag, its details, then let the fish swim free. ARI researchers had this particular fish in their database, which showed it was tagged in November 2017 at 37cm. Keith measured the fish at 40cm when he caught it and the ARI crew say many Maccas of this size are about 30 years old! Keith reported the tag was dirty and hard to read, understandable given it’d been swimming around for 3 years since it last had a clean. This particular Macca was caught by Keith at almost the opposite end of the dam from where ARI had initially tagged it. Research shows Maccas can make this run in only a matter of days. With nearly 10 years of data on this fascinating native fish, we’re learning more about Maccas with every recapture and it’s all helping ensure they’re around for future generations. #maccas #nativefish #ARIresearch
25.01.2022 Carp are considered one of the world’s most invasive fish species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The impacts of the species can be felt ...in decreasing water quality, decreasing native fish numbers and increased pressure on fishing and irrigation practices. The map below shows the extent of the spread of carp on the Australian continent. For more detailed information on the negative impacts of carp, see here: https://finterest.com.au/controlling-carp-numbers-biomass-/ Image: Stuart et.al, 2020 - Continental threat: how many common carp are there in Australia?
22.01.2022 It's broodfish collection time! Macquarie perch is an endangered species in the North East. This secretive native freshwater fish was once widespread in the Mur...ray-Darling Basin. The current population distribution is now limited to only a few locations some of which have been impacted by bushfires. Arthur Rylah Research Institute (ARI) survey teams partnered with Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) for the annual Macquarie broodfish collection. A total of 58 fish (30 females and 28 males) have been collected and transported back to the Snobs Creek hatchery, where they will add genetic diversity for improved breeding. This year the collection is assisting with the @NorthEastCMA #BushfireRecoveryProject, funded by National Landcare Program and Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment. Next steps will see the release of new fingerlings upstream to boost the recovery and increase the resilience of Macquarie perch populations in the region. #NLP #ARIscience See more
22.01.2022 We’ve just completed our autumn survey of fish in the rivers and streams across the Eastern Mount Lofty Ranges and there were some surprise discoveries, as this... video reveals! Highlights included a bumper catch of native Blackfish in the Angas River, just south of Strathalbyn, and Mountain Galaxias. About 60 sites were surveyed and the information will help better understand the health of the Eastern Mt Lofty waterways. Do you have native fish in your creek? 20.01.2022 Did you know that trout can take a heavy toll on native frogs? The Critically Endangered spotted tree frog has suffered major declines due to chytrid fungus dis...ease and non-native fish eating tadpoles. We don't yet have a way to fight chytrid fungus but we can help the frogs survive by reducing the impact of non-native fish. Recreation fishing groups like VRFish and Australian Trout Foundation Inc are one of many partners helping to save the frog by removing non-native fish from a site near Lake Eildon, Vic which is important for spotted tree frogs and has low recreational fishing value. 10.01.2022 Rapid Creek is Darwin's only freshwater source, unique among capital cities, it supports a number of important vegetation communities, and has been an important... cultural and sacred site for the Larrakia people for many thousands of years. It is cherished by people in Darwin for its swimming, fishing, and as a recreational site. Recent BRUV observations identified fish commonly known as Carp Gudgeon, Spangled Grunter, Ox-eye Herring, Chequered Rainbowfish Black-banded Rainbowfish, and Purple Spotted Gudgeon. Even more exciting during this footage are a couple of baby Barramundi inhabiting the creek around the Jingili water gardens. #FishingNT #NTFishing #RapidCreek #BRUV #Barramundi #Freshwater #FishingAustralia #FisheriesScience #YouFishWeScience #NorthernAustralia #SupportLocal #NorthernTerritory #Darwin #TopEnd #Larrakia OzFish Unlimited Michael Gunner Australian Marine Sciences Association Country Needs People Senator Malarndirri McCarthy - Northern Territory Save Rapid Creek
10.01.2022 I always seem to forget just how screwed up habitats are around Inverell We sampled around 12 ish sites in the region, one had no fish, one had no exotics (the... only fish present was Mountain Galaxias) and besides those two one other lacked Gambusia, but trout were present (along with Darling Hardyhead). Most sites were swarming with Gambusia, with a few goldfish thrown in for good measure. At many sites there was limited riparian vegetation and tons of grazing damage. Still fairly dry up here, many sites were only barely flowing. Even one of the native fish pops we found was introduced! Firetail Gudgeons were found in one creek along with a previously recorded pop from Pindari Dam. The Pindari ones had come from around Grafton based on their genetics. We did find that Darling Hardyhead have returned to the lower bits of the Macintyre around Graman after the drought which was great to see. They seem to be present up and down the Macintyre main channel which is good to see. But we didn’t find any elsewhere except for upper Swan Brook, which was one of the few sites lacking Gambos. Darling Hardyhead were quite abundant in that creek. I’ve added captions to the photos to provide a bit more context.
07.01.2022 People don’t seem to understand the huge danger they put our bush communities in by having a campfire and then driving home after their weekend away without ens...uring it is out. In this example ample water was available within 5m but that was just too hard for these irresponsible campers who could take the time to fully extinguish their camp fire. It should be noted that in this case the Police were called as CCTV footage was available. I do not know if any action has been taken. Thanks for helping spread the word about the danger Warragul Drouin Gazette, much appreciated. See more
04.01.2022 Reimagine Recreate Restore is the theme for this year's World Environment Day. This World Environment Day will kick off the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration... (2021-2030), a global mission to revive billions of hectares, from forests to farmlands, from the top of mountains to the depth of the sea. Ecosystem restoration means preventing, halting and reversing the current damage to our ecosystems and to go from exploiting nature to healing it. Only with healthy ecosystems can we enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change and stop the collapse of biodiversity. Healthy fish and healthy rivers are an essential part of this. The UMDR and our partners are proud to be contributing to this in the upper Murrumbidgee catchment! 03.01.2022 It's been over 2 years since our humble beginnings in Launceston, on a bright and sunny Sunday, in late October, 2018, a rally that started and maintained the r...age. To add to the great work that our Hobart crew have been doing with regular informal Monday catch ups, we'd like to open up opportunity for a Launceston catch up and discussion next week for northern Tasmanians. If you would be interested in coming along, please register interest on this post or via private message, it doesn't have to be Monday night, any night next week is a possibility. If you haven't been able to make the informal Hobart meetings due to travel from the north, or would like the chance to have some input, meet with admins, volunteer or just discuss the issues, this is a great opportunity. It would be great to make it a regular thing in conjunction with our hard working Hobart team, please let us know and we'll organise it asap.... Cheers!
01.01.2022 Our Victorian branch has had some great success! Members from Native Fish Australia ( NFA ) Vic helped collect brood stock from the last Victorian population of Southern Purple Spotted Gudgeon from a drying lake and we are now seeing success! Eggs and successful fry hatching from a breeding pair laid in a tank environment!
01.01.2022 Look at these little guys! The eggs we recently harvested from the Murray cod nesting boxes have hatched. At the moment, they’re being fed brine shrimp, or as... you might fondly remember from your childhood days - sea monkeys! Soon they’ll be ready to go back outside to our plankton ponds where they’ll feed onyou guessed it! Plankton. Your fishing licence fees are what makes this all happen. Find out what else they contribute to here: https://vfa.vic.gov.au///your-fishing-licence-fees-at-work #fishinglicencefeesatwork #murraycod #snobscreekhatchery
