25.01.2022 Todays news We finally found a matching buddy for one of our lonely Eastern Grey Kangaroo joeys. Being mob animals Eastern Grey Kangaroos must be brought up with other joeys of similar development and age so that they learn the social structures of being kangaroos. On a very sad note, a local resident found a roadkill wombat mum with a joey in the pouch. She retrieved the joey, kept it warm and brought it to us. Sadly on arrival it passed away. For this viable joey help came... too late. If the people who collided with the wombat mum would have checked the pouch and brought it to us or any other wildlife carer, the little wombat could still be alive. PLEASE, check the pouches of the animals you collide with; you could save a live. We are authorised to care for wildlife through Wildlife Rescue South Coast Inc. #checkthepouch #saveourwildlife #nocullofkangaroos #Wombat #kangaroo #australianwildlife #southernhighlands
24.01.2022 WACS is supporting Native Wildlife Rescue for which we are very grateful. Many thanks to the WACS team for their endless efforts to wildlife carers. Robertson, Southern Highlands, NSW
24.01.2022 Easter Wombats The first wombat is a young female which was found close to the main house early Sunday morning. She displays infected bite wounds to her forehead, along her spine and on her rump. These are typical signs of attacks by other wombats.... The second wombat is approx 14 months young. Sadly, she is suffering from mange (see image 2, 3 and 4). As no skin appeared to be cracked or bleeding she has a good chance of recovering, following regular treatment. If you require further information on mange treatment please also see Wombat Protection Society of Australia. 23.01.2022 Local actor/musician John Water, his family, fellow entertainers and friends did not hesitate to put together a successful fundraiser concert "FireAid" which raised funds to help those desperately in need of support during the bushfires 2019/2020. Native Wildlife Rescue was supported by John and his amazing team. Due to the restrictions of covet 19, the entertainment industry are desperately in need of help themselves. The majority, like John do not qualify for any Governmen...t support. John and his team are working on a script and music for their all Australian show, which will provide many jobs within the entertainment industry.. Lets give back and show John and his creative team that they can count on us too.
23.01.2022 What a lucky joey..... Sadly his mum was the victim of a road collision last night whilst the joey was thrown from her pouch and sustained a critical fracture to his foot. Xrays revealed that the fracture can be mended. ... 22.01.2022 Help came too late.... .....for this juvenile male, badly manged wombat. Mange in conjunction with roadkill have an devastating effect on our wombat population.... Mange can be treated in the early stages and is more successful if done onsite, within the wombats habitat. Wombat Protection Society of Australia as well as your local wildlife groups are happy to assist with detailed information on how to treat manged wombats. Another reliable source, mostly within the Southern Highlands / Southern Tablelands is Wombat Care Bundanoon. We also treat and assist with manged wombats. 21.01.2022 Double admission..... ....arrived at our care centre last Friday after a thunderstorm blew through in Robertson. The first Joey was rescued out of kangaroo mum‘s pouch after she encountered a collision with a vehicle. Sadly the mother passed away but her Joey was saved and is now slowly settling in at our care centre. The Joey is a boy and weighs just under 5kg. ... Th other kangaroo is a male juvenile around 12kg which was found lying in a ditch by a neighbour; sadly he was unable to move, completely wet and stone cold. We placed him on a big cushion in front of our fireplace to warm him up slowly. Sadly he passed away during the night. These are very hard and emotional times when we realise that we cannot safe this particular animal despite all efforts. 21.01.2022 Thats what buddies are for. Any rescued young orphaned joey is being buddied up with other joeys of same age to reduce the human imprint whilst in care and it is a good way to learn how to be a wombat (a kangaroo, a possum etc.) in preparation for survival after release. When you find a young joey in deceased mums pouch please dont attempt to raise it by itself; contact your local wildlife group where the joey will be raised by trained and experienced carers. ... 20.01.2022 A young male Eastern Grey Kangaroo was rescued from the Kangaroo Valley this morning. His foot was caught at the top strand of hinged-mesh fencing. Due to his small size he was dangling from the fence with one foot/leg; not touching the ground. This could indicate a possible hip dislocation apart from the obvious injury to his foot. He is also at high risk from suffering from myopathy. Any animals caught in netting or fencing are required to come into care as injuries might... not be obvious immediately but become apparent a few days later. We are members of Wildlife Rescue South Coast Inc. #wildliferescue #wildliferehabilitation #bancullingwildlife #kangaroo #southernhighlands
19.01.2022 A young mother Eastern Grey kangaroo sustained severe injuries after a collision with a car yesterday late afternoon. Wildlife enthusiasts checked the pouch and kept the joey warm by placing it onto their skin providing their own body temperature as a "heat source". These unfurred joeys; "pinkies" as we call them cannot hold their own body temperature and would get cold very quickly without a "heat source" which decreases their survival chances. ... This little boy is in very experienced hands with my friend and mentor. Sadly the tiny joey has a few bruises around bis nose. The first three days are very critical. Hopefully he will defy the odds and will grow into a healthy boy. 18.01.2022 Buddy - Buddy Today, a male Eastern Grey Kangaroo joey was found near a fence, all by itself. It has a small injury just below his neck. We assume the mother Roo may have lost it whilst jumping the fence. This joey has gone to an amazing carer who already has a little kangaroo joey in care of similar size.... Whilst we have wildlife in rehabilitation it is of importance that these are buddied up with other animals of same specie, age and development. Only then will they be less imprinted by us human and learn the "language and behaviour" of being a wombat, kangaroo, possum etc. Hand raising wildlife on its own will never make them fit for release or survival back into the wild. 15.01.2022 It is that time of the year again that commuters travel in the dark. It is the same time when the Australian nocturnal wildlife become active. Please watch out for our wildlife. When you encounter wildlife incidents please, if it is safe for you to do so check wether the animal is still alive and/or has a joey in its pouch. Either way please seek assistance from your local wildlife group. ... It is also of great assistance if you could stay onsite until one of our rescuers arrives. Injured wildlife still can move away from the scene or predators will arrive before our rescuers. 13.01.2022 Still alive..... .....was this wombat mother despite lying on her back with all four legs stretched out. In this position even a healthy wombat would be unable to roll itself back onto the feet let alone an injured one. ... The driver who collided with the wombat neither did check wether she was still alive nor if there was a joey in the pouch. Another local resident passing by spotted the injured wombat and realised a little foot sticking out of mums pouch. When approaching the wombat, he realised that mum was still alive and called for help. Due to the wombat mums severe injuries, we sadly were unable to save her. Her little female joey was very cold but she is now comfortably resting in a humidi crib at a very good friend and fellow carer. 12.01.2022 It is this time of year again..... where commuters travel in the dark and encounter wildlife crossing roads. This is high risk to collide with our precious and vulnerable wildlife.... For further assistance please call your local wildlife group, either Wildlife Rescue South Coast on 0418 427 214 or WIRES. Sadly this little male Eastern Grey Kangaroo lost its mum yesterday. 09.01.2022 In transit..... This little guy stayed briefly at our care centre after being rescued and before being taken into permanent care by another dedicated carer who is able to feed it every 3 hours. 08.01.2022 Lucky Pinky The original car driver who hit the mother wombat failed to check her pouch. Lucky for this little 340 gr Pinky one of our rescuers/carers found the deceased wombat near Burrawang, stopped and checked the pouch despite being pressed for time for the school run.... The tiny girl is doing very well and shares a humidi crib with another same sized male wombat joey. Both have a very good chance to develop into strong "forest bull dozers' but this will take approximately another 2 years in care. Please if you are in a situation twhere you hit an animal, render assistance by checking if the animal is still alive and/or has a joey in its pouch. (Please ensure that it is safe for you to do so.) 08.01.2022 So many losses.... Within two days 3 young kangaroos were hit by cars on Tourist Road, Robertson, within only 50-100m apart. These collisions resulted in horrendous fractures and neither of the animals survived. Two of these kangaroos were carrying young joeys in their pouches. The joeys were old enough to be hand raised by experienced wildlife carers.... Sadly the pouches were not checked and 2 more joeys lost their lifes. If you encounter injured wildlife please contact your local wildlife group. It is of tremendous help if you can stay onsite until assistance arrives. If you are pressed for time please mark the site with a plastic bag or ribbon wrapped around a branch. 08.01.2022 Devastating news for this little 8kg female wombat. She was found on the side of Kangaloon Road, Kangaloon in the afternoon, not moving at all. A local lovely gentleman brought her to us hoping we can help and with assistance of a veterinarian would be able to fix her injuries. ... 06.01.2022 A big huge thank you..... to my mum who did not hesitate to come out from Germany last November to help us with the care of the increasing numbers of rescued wildlife. Not only did she experience the fear of, the destruction, the losses, the injuries of wildlife and humans caused by the horrendous bushfires. She also was unable to return back to Germany as planned due to the Covet 19 pandemic. Devastatingly and very unexpected I lost my very unique and beloved husband Woody.... 04.01.2022 We are not impressed at all with the pending cull. Too many animals have perished in the recent fires. "Get rid of inconvenient commodities" is nowadays societys response instead of thinking outside the box and finding proper solutions.

03.01.2022 Mange treatment for wombats On several occasions this wombat was spotted on Vaughan Ave, Robertson. It is suffering from mange but we can treat it as it not too advanced yet. 02.01.2022 From Brazil Slums to the Taj Mahal Cadence & Co Southern Highlands in conjunction with their Sydney office offered to support our local wildlife sanctuary in the Southern Highlands after the recent bush fire and flood crisis (Robertson just under 800ml). After the initial knock down of a very dilapidated and ugly, yet just workable compound, a new enclosure was designed and erected over a period of 3 days. ... Every day a new crew of about 15-17 female/male staff members (carpenters, apprentices, architects, landscapers, admin and management all of Cadence & Co.) rolled up their sleeves to build this amazing enclosure suitable for housing a variety of wildlife coming into our care. The interest was such that part of the crew commuted daily from Sydney. Not only was the compound donated but also the fixing of some gates and fencing, the cleaning up of storm debris and undergrowth as well as the building of a rock retaining wall. Gubbins Pulbrook Mitre 10 and Reese Plumbing provided the much needed material. The coffee man Van Morton provided refreshments for morning and afternoon tea and the provision of lunch was also a courtesy of Cadence & Co., to keep everyone going and the Mittagong Hotel provided accommodation. What a true community effort. Amongst the Cadence staff members ran a high level of team spirit throughout the building process, and everyone was enthusiastic about the rehabilitation work we are doing. We are most grateful for their generosity in helping us to continue our work with the native wildlife. A huge THANK-YOU to everyone involved. #southernhighlands #communityspirits @Cadence & Co
02.01.2022 Another young wombat around 9.7kg, was found all by itself going walkabout with no mother wombat anywhere near. This size wombat would be an easy target for their dominant and territorial counterpart which would result in nasty attack wounds around the neck area, ears, along the spine and rump. Luckily this wombat, named John by his rescuer, a Robertsonian, appeared unharmed. Despite his advanced development we are trying to buddy him up as he will be in rehabilitation for... quite a long time until he has proven to be strong and feisty enough before we set him and his buddy free. We kept him overnight in a large box. Despite a heavy lid he managed to climb out last night and was running loose in our big shed causing havoc. As usual we check up on all critters before our own bed time. This head count provided a great opportunity to catch the escapee to put him back into his box. He survived the night happily munching on grass, tipping over his water bowl and was found squeezed into his food dish this morning. All in all a normal wombat behaviour. We are authorised to rescue and rehabilitate Australian Wildlife through Wildlife Rescue South Coast. #wombat #rescueaustralianwildlife #checkthepouch #southernhighlands
02.01.2022 A listless and aimless wandering echidna was found in Berrima and brought to our attention. We are dealing with a youngish animal, less than 3 years old, going by its weight. It is very difficult to determine the sex of an echidna (unless it is maiting season when you may come across an echidna train, where a female is in hot pursuit of male admirers). 02.01.2022 Hello..... Australian Wildlife are constant victims of motor vehicle impacts. Sadly this beautiful male Brushtail Possum passed away overnight. ... If you come across an injured animal please check if it still alive and/or has a joey in the pouch. Lately, we come across a few orphaned small wombats grazing on roadside all by themselves. Small wombats will not survive and need to be brought into care. Whilst calling for assistance and help to arrive, please keep your eyes on these little "bulldozers" as it will be much harder and almost impossible to catch them at a later time. 01.01.2022 A young Swamp Wallaby was brought to us after colliding with a car. A tiny joey was snug in her pouch. The mother Wallaby was suffering head trauma and checked out by a veterinarian. We were hoping to be able to save both the mother and her joey. Very sadly one morning we found the little 47gr joey abandoned. This size joey is far too small for us to hand raise. ... To avoid stress and capture myopathy we moved the mother wallaby to a larger enclosure where she can move around freely but is still observed and we can intervene if required.
