24.01.2022 We have had the most prolific season of snap peas, loads of coriander, beetroot, fennel bulbs, more broccoli, cabbage, tomato seedlings coming along nicely and several older tomato plants growing beautifully. We were recently gifted some biodynamic soil from long term clients and oh my goodness the garden was singing after receiving such nutritional vitality. Thank You Of course there is still plenty of colour in the garden, including a very successful flowering of Iris... after I shifted them to a better spot last year. Apart from working on the shed Gregory has been catching up on a lot of educational webinars and is very inspired by quite a range of new information on some of his old favourites that have come to light. Ask him when you see him. As for me I have been further inspired by an organic gardening book that was recently recommended. Why ? The needs of healthy soil is so similar to ourselves. Both require nutrients for the same reasons, a healthy microbiome with good bacteria which in turn helps plants and us to be much less susceptible to pests or diseases. Prevention has always been the best form of cure. When we remove ourselves from nature and further destroy our ecosystems, we are in effect destroying ourselves. Ground yourself and get your hands into some healthy soil, and feel wonderful I will post a pic of the book in the comments. #naturesmedicinecabinet

24.01.2022 A weekend of gentle soaking rain was just what the garden needed. Leaves shiny and fresh, and all the tanks, ponds and bird baths full. The refreshing, inspiring, comforting and healing encouragement from gardens and nature is universally appreciated. ... I see the buds forming on the trees in preparation of spring, reminding us of the cycle of seasons and of life. This article gives a greater understanding of the neurological benefits of gardens and nature. Also we will be taking a scheduled two week break from July 25th if you need to stock up with anything please let Alison know and pick up no later than 4pm on Friday 24th July. We will be working on the garden, taking some bush walks and hopefully catching up with extended family. #natureheals #loveinthegarden https://www.brainpickings.org//05/27/oliver-sacks-gardens/

23.01.2022 Today is just the best day to be out in the sun in the GV soaking up those wonderful Vit D promoting rays. Such an important vitamin (often referred to now as a hormone) for bone and teeth growth in children, bone protection in adults and of course its incredible role in immune function and cardiovascular support, and very important in supporting good mood. Go for a walk, get in the garden, lie in the hummock, read a book somewhere nice in the sun. ... Earlier and later in the day is best for Vit D syntheses without sunscreen, and choose your sunscreen wisely as many are more toxic than the benefits they afford. Just remember to put on a hat, as your brain is the part of your body that really doesnt like overheating. #naturesmedicinecabinet https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/12/9/2757/htm

22.01.2022 If you have young children or like us grandchildren, now is the time to connect them to edible weeds. Dandelions grow just about everywhere, we pick the (non furry) leaves to put in just about any savoury cooking or in salads. The best edible dandelions grow with flowers on a single stalk, not branched and have smooth with serrated edged leaves. ... Our grandchildren can recognise an amazing amount of edible and medicinal weeds, herbs, and veggies. They are constantly picking flowers to taste the nectar or to make tea, leaves of medicinal weeds to sooth a bite, scratch or sting especially from a nettle. This page below seems to have a lot of great suggestions for children. #naturesmedicinecabinet

20.01.2022 Hmm YES we are OPEN, not sure why FB has us set as temporarily closed and I cant seem to fix it. Any ideas anyone? I still have the open select hours switched on in the edit page/hours section and the selected hours are indicated and saved.

19.01.2022 This glorious Autumn weather has been perfect to get all the jobs in the garden completed before the much needed rain arrives. In between everything else we have managed to harvest some olives and they are currently in a tannin reducing brine. Next we will bottle them in a recipe given to me by an old Italian many years ago. Delicious! Planted garlic, beetroot, an assortment of greens, and scattered lots of different saved flower seeds to encourage beneficial bugs to the ga...rden. Today we will harvest one variety of pumpkin, the last of an earlier crop of carrots and keeping an eye on the sweet and white potatoes. Just about all the bulbs are up with a promise of lots of winter colour, and this first picture I have here is an orange flower that normally only flowers in Spring, hmm a bit confused. We also took down the old green plum to make way for a flowering gum, it was a bit sad as the plum trunk had enormous character, but hollow inside and a magnet for fruit fly. The autumn colours are gorgeous and the rabbits have finally finished moulting and are looking sleek again. We have been in shorts and T-shirts soaking up as much potential Vit D as we can to help take us through the winter. Our garden is slowly being developed in between the busyness of our lives, the next thing Gregory plans to build is a potting shed come glass house followed by a new chook house and enclosure for some new chooks. Every time I feel a little despondent I look back at some old photos and can really appreciate what we have achieved, simply bit by bit, one step at a time. As the natives trees and shrubs grow taller, the native birds increase, the amount of food we harvest , and the sheer joy, exercise and relaxation the garden gives us, we smile and feel blessed. #natureheals #naturesmedicinecabinet #backyardsupermarket

19.01.2022 Its a perfect spring day to be in the garden. Feeling a lot of satisfaction after planting a lot of seeds in seed raising boxes, all placed in a sheltered and warm part of the garden. We have prepared new garden beds for them, and now we wait. Picking lots of snap peas, silverbeet, beetroot, carrots, leeks, spring onions, celery, broccolini, rocket, and coming along nicely are broad beans, globe artichoke and garlic. ... Gregory is plodding along with his shed replacement, which he is thoroughly enjoying and yes like the house it will be over engineered. Thanks to the timely rain our young trees that are now established enough look like they are really going to have terrific growth. Some of the natives will flower and the bees are now very active and healthy looking. The full moon is early next week and we have quite a few passion fruit close to ripe, I am in anticipation of them dropping according to the passion fruit/full moon phenomena ! Spring is of course the season of fluctuations in temperature, wind, lots of pollen and according to Ayurveda it is when Kapha AMA melts, resulting in mucous, hay fever, asthma, bronchitis, sinus etc. Keeping balanced, not getting cold or overheating is important, keeping daily routine of tongue scraping, the practice of Nasya, 2 drops of warmed black sesame oil in each nostril every morning, having a morning drink of warmed water with a little grated fresh ginger and lemon juice, add 1/2 teaspoon honey when its the right temperature to drink. There are many wonderful herbs and homeopathics your practitioner can help you with, as this year more than ever your usual sneeze or cough wont go down well ! A handy tip; If you enjoy essential oils, one drop of one of the following, peppermint, lemon grass, rosemary, cinnamon leaf, thyme, eucalyptus or simply your favourite placed at the bottom of your mask, makes the wearing of it just that bit more pleasant, and, as most essential oils are anti viral and anti bacterial it gives you some natural protection. One of our rabbits is currently collecting lots of dry material and making a nest under the stack of weather boards (which will go on the shed) she sadly doesnt realise that there will be no mate, but very cute to watch. #naturesmedicinecabinet

17.01.2022 Have you ever eaten Umeboshi plums? They are delicious and are coloured purple with a very aromatic taste that comes from Perilla Frutescens leaves also known as Shiso or Chinese mint. Thanks to a gift of young plants from a TCM practitioner friend we have been growing these for a few years now and our grandchildren know them as cough leaves. ... Yes the leaves can be eaten raw or cooked and have been traditionally used throughout Asia for mucous congestion, cough and all manner of respiratory problems. I have included an Ayurveda link below regarding the active components and benefits of this easy to grow plant. Perilla is also in a few of our tableted immune formulas. I harvested ours this morning before it dies down in order to dry the leaves to use during the winter and collect some seed for planting in the spring. There are just so many ways to look after yourself naturally with a productive herbal and veggie garden. https://ayushology.com/health-b/health-benefits-of-perilla/ https://www.chopstickchronicles.com/umeboshi-homemade/ Oh and I have also been advised it’s toxic to horses so be careful if you have them nearby. #naturesmedicinecabinet

17.01.2022 https://www.abc.net.au/news/ I havent as yet met my gorgeous new great nephew in person, and I am so looking forward to a cuddle. I enjoy seeing little videos of him but its hard, I also want to hug my amazing niece (his mum) and my other close relatives. How about you ? ... Yes there is a mountain of things to do here, from building the shed, glass house, chook house, beading, knitting, garden and of course study. There is so much resource literature to read, family and friends conversations to enjoy via relevant platforms...........and yet, a hug from my parents and extended family, a lazy afternoon with a dear friend, to jump in the car for a simple day trip of exploring is what we yearn for. Sigh! Fortunately the one thing in life you can always count on is change. Sometimes it comes suddenly and other times like a slow train heading straight for us. Right now its expect the unexpected and go with the flow time! Yes this situation too will change and acknowledging where you are at in the middle of this is important, how you feel, what would ease or support your feelings and most importantly keeping your communication going. Use your inner compass to guide you, your inner wisdom is profound and real. Be wary of following alarmists or saviours just now and stick with what you know supports you, validates you and sustains you. A good article below. Sending lots of good vibes to you all. 2020-07-27/coronavirus-impact-on-mental-health-disenfranchised-grief/12477398?fbclid=IwAR0KJ95qd5GmPasm7-yFZmOtQ9yXEpyCrYUXS7LUuPgV5J6D5ThF0rhAPgg

17.01.2022 There are many ways to keep fit. Gregory has his regular three mornings a week home gym routine, we both do yoga at home, walking, stretches and of course my favourite.......gardening. Yes if the hole I need to dig is a bit too challenging, Gregory is my man, using a combination of crowbar, a variety of shovels, the trusty pelican pick and a thingy that picks up the soil in its jaws. ... Yesterday I planted sweet peas, and the sugar peas, cauliflower seeds I planted recently are popping up. Two beds are prepared for garlic, carrots and beetroot and this straight down steady rain is making the garden sing, the tanks are filling and I am looking forward to Wednesday another happy day in the garden. I am not sure who to give credit to for this inspiring picture, if anyone does please comment. #gardensarethebest #naturesmedicinecabinet

16.01.2022 Spring is always busy in the garden and today was a Cumquat jam making day. Our two fairly old potted cumquats have done well this year Picking lots of snap peas, broad beans, carrots and lots of leafy greens. The potatoes have all popped up, the wisteria is about to flower, the roses look promising and a lot more honeyeaters are back in the garden. ... Looking forward to the rain tonight and the freshness of a new day. Spring has sprung

16.01.2022 The end of the year seems to be galloping towards us, with Christmas and holiday preparations for many in full swing. We are closing at midday on December 24th and will return bright and fresh on January 4th. Please place any orders for repeats and ensure pickup before midday on the 24th. ... A few photos of the veggie garden below with some potatoes harvested, picking tomatoes already, the corn looks very promising, the geometry of a purple cabbage, black radishes, sweet potato slips all planted and so much more. We love our home made muesli, although I still soak it with hot water or hot milk before eating making it easier to digest and obtaining the maximum amount of nutrients. The Albizzia tree has grown beautifully and looking down on it’s beautiful soft pink flowers from upstairs is such a delight. Used in both Ayurveda and Chinese medicine for the nervous system, anxiety, sleep and more. As Gregory slowly uses the building material he had put aside for the shed, more space becomes available in the back yard and so I can plant more medicinal and native plants. The hazelnut trees are loaded suggesting a cold winter, it’s a pity we don’t have squirrels (just joking) and I am very thankful the cockatoos haven’t discovered them yet. All the fruit trees are netted to stop fruit fly and the red plums are almost ripe. Here’s looking forward to a better 2021 and a wonderful garden full of delicious edible and medicinal produce. #naturesmedicinecabinet

15.01.2022 Another reason to grow your own and buy local. !

14.01.2022 One of our favourite vegetarian dishes is an Ayurveda veggie kitchari sometimes called Kitchardi. Made with split moong dhal, rice, spices ghee and seasonal veggies, its a perfect meal to have at the full and new moons, or simply because you dont want meat. Gregory finds he does not do so well as a vegetarian and I thrive, so we find the balance. ... Traditionally its the full and new moon times that many ancient cultures avoided consuming meat. Including Tibetan Buddhists, Daoists and my wise Feng Shui teacher. Especially at the full moon, as the energy is literally more full, and intensified. Blood pressure can rise along with emotions, sexual energy and frustrations. This is the time when conflicts are potentially higher and drugs both prescribed and elicit are sought. Interestingly meats along with alcohol and some drugs are very stimulating and so they can add fuel to the fire so to speak. If this dish were to be truly Sattvic and cleansing it would not contain the onion and garlic or the veggies, but its perfect for us today. The veggies fresh out of our garden today are leeks, carrots, peas, chickweed, nettle, celery, turmeric, fennel, coriander and a squeeze of lemon juice on top. Delicious #workingwiththeintelligenceofnature #naturesmedicinecabinet

14.01.2022 Yay fixed, thanks to wonderful and very patient Tara James. Her expertise is in helping people like me. Thank you https://www.smallmightygroup.com/

12.01.2022 We both love the full flavour, freshness and nutritional benefits of home grown fruits and veggies. Our soil is great, full of worms and of course we have lots of beneficial bees and bugs like lace wings to help pollinate and keep pests to a minimum. We make our own compost and use seaweed, and our very own rabbit manure. ... We still have fine nets on the quince, pear and peach trees to keep out the fruit fly which works very well, and the rest of the garden doesn’t seem to be affected. We also found a use for an old bath which has delighted our grandchildren and it also provides a beneficial cooling effect when we open the windows in the evening. Our garden is currently providing, beans purple and green, beetroot, cucumber, zucchini, carrots, purslane, tomatoes 3 varieties, rhubarb, spring onions, chives, celery, okra, corn, potatoes, apricots, red plums, lemons, strawberries, black currents, raspberries, passion fruit, and lots of culinary herbs. Taking over again are three types of pumpkin and sweet potato, the hazelnut trees are loaded this year. Yes it’s enjoyable work, keeps you fit and out in the fresh air, and the reward is delicious, loaded with vitality food. As my Ayurveda teacher constantly reminded us only life can give us life so choose food that is full of life, recently living and notice the difference in your own health and vitality. Gregory and Alison are back in full swing on Monday January 4th. Wishing everyone a Happy New Year

12.01.2022 Wonderful ! Yes its often the synergistic relationship of the ingredients that creates something super special and is why Ayurveda has combined herbs with minerals, natural sugars, ferments, oils etc for thousands of years, and why traditional western herbalists use three or more herbs combined for the best results. Antibiotics resistant bacteria has become a major problem and understanding the medicinal benefits of kitchen herbs and medicinal herbs is something we need to... come back to. Confidence in your own health comes as a result of listening to your own body, how it feels after eating too much or too little, or perhaps incompatible combinations like a meat dish followed by fruit and ice cream. How is your clarity of mind when regularly having early nights and early mornings? How too little or too much exercise causes inflammation, but the right amount for you is empowering. How many more mouthfuls of food did it take from your first burp signifying you were full, to being stuffed and having hiccups? Very easily noticed in children. The more you observe yourself and your children too, the more self empowered you become and have the ability to help your loved ones understand themselves as well. Live according to your individual needs, your stage of life, the current season and temperature. 11.01.2022 Natures medicine cabinet has something to offer everywhere we go. Plantain grows abundantly in the GV and it’s great to sooth a cough. Make a decoction of the leaves or a very strong tea, add a little honey when it’s drinking temperature and sip three to five cups over the day. ... Make fresh each day. Hmm what you think is a weed could well be a food and, or a medicine. PS make sure the plants you harvest have not been sprayed with chemicals ! #comebacktonature #comebacktoyourself #naturesmedicinecabinet

11.01.2022 Professor Ian Brighthope has always been passionate about strengthening the immune system and the many ways in which humans can keep themselves naturally healthy. The last six months this question has been at the forefront of our clients individual health approach. Bearing in mind that each person is divinely unique which always needs to be taken into account, there are of course some fundamental basics, which Prof. Brighthope explores in this video or transcript. To achie...ve a well functioning immune system is really not that difficult to do in todays world where living in developed countries with good sanitation, plentiful and a good variety of food, clean water, and good housing we should be fighting fit and enjoying long lives. Thus only needing medical intervention in case of trauma emergencies. The choices we make in this land of plenty largely determines our overall outcome and also that of our children. So please consider your health each time you make a choice in your daily life. The stronger you are the better example you set for those around you and the more able you are to help those in need. Remember from this moment on, your choices will reflect in your future, hopefully with Prof Brighthopes information your choices will be easy. 10.01.2022 High country magic at the end of an exceptional year. Lots of gratitude and thanks to my continuing clients for their patronage and trust particularly over this last nine months. A huge acknowledgment and thanks to my consistently caring and ever welcoming receptionist Alison and my phenomenally supportive wife Melynda, I couldn’t have done this year without you both ... Here’s to a more optimistic and predictable year ahead ! Have a joyous, connected Christmas and New Year focusing on all that truly matters to your heart. We return on January 4th 2021, all the very best Gregory, Melynda and Alison

10.01.2022 Being in the garden and in nature is my happy place, observing and connecting with the different stages of plant growth, the insects, bees, birds, lizards and depending on where I am other animals. The welcome rain has encouraged the fruit and nut trees to set a bumper crop, I have never seen so many hazelnuts, tiny as they are. The rain has encouraged more weed growth so that has kept me busy along with planting more carrots, beetroot, pumpkin, corn and climbing beans whic...h are all up. The potatoes are going well and I keep piling up around them the semi composted straw and hopefully the sweet potatoes will be sprouted enough to plant before too long. We have netted the old apricot tree and next will be the plum, quince, peach, cherry and last of all the pear. This for us is the best defence against fruit fly. The scent of the roses, honeysuckle, citrus and white cedar is just delightful and the Linden tree is finally waking up. Our big back yard that was once loaded with derelict sheds (just terrifying) load of nettles, weeds and four very old fruit trees is slowly coming together. The replacing of what was the original garage with all recycled materials is taking time as each piece has to be cut or shaped purposefully and Gregory is patiently doing a terrific job. Next comes the chook house and chook run plus a little greenhouse for me to raise seedlings and to store some gardening things. The rabbits are happy and healthy especially with such a variety of grasses and plants to choose from in their diet. Lots of birds visiting, honeyeaters especially, and lots of lizards too. Our garden supplies us with delicious and nutritious fresh food all year. #supermarketinthebackyard #naturesmedicinecabinet #suberbanmunrofarm

09.01.2022 Cardamom is one of our most favourite spices. Many people when first trying cardamom experience the calmative and relaxing effect as most people are stressed these days. Secondly its ability to shift mucous which is always needed in winter and spring. ... We have it in our warm spiced milk drink every evening, but I also add it to curries as well as porridge, cakes and cookies for our grandchildren and they love it. Suck a green cardamom pod to help breathe better, clear your head and reduce heat in your head, and enjoy the added benefit of a fresh breath. This informative article gives a lot more info of the health benefits of cardamom. Kitchen spices for good health. #ayurvedawisdom https://www.curejoy.com//26-aromatic-facts-of-the-aphrodi/

09.01.2022 Our two pet rabbits are nearly three years old, and the white one is the most inquisitive, today checking out the contents of Gregory’s shed. We originally had the rabbits confined to a large hutch and fed them a large variety of grasses, veggies and a rabbit mix from the farm produce store. They were ok on this diet but they weren’t thriving. The tricky thing was they kept managing to escape, by rattling one of the three doors to loosen the latch. It was regular exercise c...hasing them only to lock them up and repeat. As the first summer approached I realised keeping them cool was going to be tricky, and so the next time they escaped we left them alone leaving the bottom door of their palatial hutch permanently open to use if needed. The next worry was mosquito born Calicivirus and Myxomatosis both designed to eradicate rabbits. There is no vaccine for Myxo although there is for Calici but it has to be given three or four times a year and still has no guarantee so we haven’t bothered. Hmmm tricky. Over the last three years I have watched the rabbits choose a diet of a variety of medicinal herbs we grow. Herbs that support the immune system, for inflammation, fever, infection and digestion. The phytonutrients of these herbs are of great benefit and clearly the rabbits natural instinct, natural intelligence leads them to what is needed, usually only consuming these medicinal herbs over a couple of days and then they are back to the grasses and yes still the rabbit mix from the farm produce store. I am just so glad we can provide such a huge variety for them. They never eat out our veggies and the worst that happens is i have to protect a young native I may plant as they will nip it off at the bottom, so I use a guard. The rabbits look incredibly healthy, they are such personalities are quite playful and always inquisitive. Apparently they can live up to twelve years, hopefully they will in our smorgasbord medicinal garden. Smart rabbits #naturesmedicinecabinet

09.01.2022 We have plenty of chickweed growing at the moment, also known as healing star because of its star like flower, and its botanical name is Stellaris Media. Chickweed can grow quite thickly but is easily crushed when walked on. Its been used by herbalists around the world to support good health in a variety of areas, most commonly in skin complaints, digestive health, respiratory health and weight management. ... Its great in relieving itches and is often used in topical skin cream preparations. We simply add it fresh into our cooking finding it largely disappears, and as its flavour is subtle you dont really notice it and yet are still obtaining all the nutritional and health benefits. The picture is the chickweed in our garden which will flower in the next few days. I have included a handy link providing a lot more information including the many ways you can prepare this wonderful herb. #naturesmedicinecabinet https://buddhasalchemy.com/chickweed-the-healing-star-how-/

09.01.2022 We will be open again tomorrow Thursday 18th and back to our regular hours. Even though we have a very warm week forecast the signs of autumn are starting to show. The crickets are singing rain, dragonflies also rain and a change of season, the hazelnuts are falling to the ground the peaches were late but absolutely delicious and the birds as always appreciate a source of water. We have four bird baths and two ponds throughout the garden. ... Two garden beds have been planted with rocket as a quick green crop to eat and dig in, the three varieties of pumpkin are excelling themselves, we are still picking, cucumber, okra, zucchini, carrots, beetroot, silverbeet, celery, tomatoes although they are almost finished. Gregory painted the shed with a some sunny coloured leftover paint he had saved. It won’t matter how dull the day is during winter, I think his shed will always look as if the sun is shining on it. #backtowork

08.01.2022 On a very dull winters day, its truly wonderful how much colour there is in the garden. We will be setting up some more raised veggie beds soon as Gregory asked me where to put the excellent good soil he will be digging out for the footings of the shed replacement. Wonderful! We will now have a permanent bed for asparagus. ... The mandarins are delicious and soon the pink grapefruit will be pink enough to start picking. The bunnies of course have their warm winter coats on and are just as entertaining as ever. I have put a little video in the comments. What are you planting next ? #backyardsupermarket

08.01.2022 Our first plum blossoms are always exciting, both the green and red plum now and then next the cherry. Thank you to the wonderful client who gifted us a blood plum and pomegranate, they will be much loved. We have some passion fruit almost ripe, amazingly still getting strawberries, yummy mandarins, pink grapefruit and lemons. ... Carrots, peas, celery, rocket, beetroot, silver beet, spring onions, leeks and soon some red onions, more cabbage broad beans, and of course lots of herbs. There is always something to do in the garden. #naturesmedicinecabinet

03.01.2022 There is plenty of evidence that Spring is wanting to make an early entrance this year, or perhaps its just anticipatory excitement from our end regarding all the delights we know that awaits us. The Chinese lantern or gooseberry has been producing delicious sweet and tangy fruit on the protected and very sunny north decking. The orangey yellowish fruit ripens on the shrub in its lantern case and its important to not eat it when green otherwise diarrhoea can ensue. ... I have included a link in the comments to some of the nutritional and health benefits. See if you can recognise the plants in the pics and maybe comment if you like We have three more veggie beds and I have sown one with carrots, beetroot and celery. Some more seeds to go into seed raising pots to plant out when its much warmer, tomatoes, okra, eggplant. We have just recently eaten our last cauliflower and we have one pumpkin left.
