25.01.2022 Hearing the news that Covid has made its way up to the Kimberley. Praying and hoping that all our communities remain safe. 24.01.2022 Join our friends at the Aboriginal Catholic Ministry in Sydney this Sunday for their National Sorry Day Healing Mass at 11am EST https://www.facebook.com/ReconciliationChurchSydney

23.01.2022 We've been asked this question a lot lately - Should we do an Acknowledgement of Country at the start of a video or conference call? The simple answer is yes. An Acknowledgement of Country is an opportunity for all participants in the meeting to pay their respects to Traditional Custodians, and we think it brings us all closer together as Australians.... Just as technology has allowed us to be together virtually, an Acknowledgement brings us together as a society and as a country. We have put together this guide to help you plan your upcoming meetings: Option 1 - General Acknowledgement Although we are meeting virtually, we continue to Acknowledge the Traditional Custodians that have, for thousands of years, walked upon and cared for the lands upon which we are all individually located. We acknowledge the continued deep spiritual attachment and relationship of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to this country and commit ourselves to the ongoing journey of reconciliation. Option 2 Specific locations and Language Groups (Individually acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the lands upon which each meeting participant is located): Although we are meeting virtually, we continue to Acknowledge the Traditional Custodians that have, for thousands of years, walked upon and cared for the lands upon which we are all individually located. We respectfully acknowledge: The _____________ peoples in (location 1), the ____________peoples in (location 2), the ________ peoples in (location 2) and so on We acknowledge each of these Nations and the continued deep spiritual attachment and relationship of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to this country and we commit ourselves to the ongoing journey of reconciliation. Stay safe and follow the guidelines of your State and Territories and we will get through this!

23.01.2022 Congratulations to Clint on the next step on his journey to become a Deacon!

23.01.2022 Following the new restrictions put in place by the SA Government, the NATSICC office will be closed for at least the next 6 days. We are still available via email etc. We are advising those that have purchased Acknowledgement Plaques or ordered Toiletry bags that deliveries will now be delayed - apologies. Our thoughts and prayers are with all communities in Australia (not just here in SA) and we are urging everyone to be thoughtful of others and comply to all restrictions p...ut in place to keep us safe. Our brothers and sisters in Melbourne have been in the position that we now find ourselves in for the past 8 months - and we owe them a debt of thanks for their strength and perseverance to keep the community safe. We take this opportunity to remind Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (and those working with us) that the link below has COVID information tailored to First Nations communities. https://www.health.gov.au//coronavirus-covid-19-advice-for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Services can be found using the following link: https://healthinfonet.ecu.edu.au//map-of-aboriginal-and-i/

22.01.2022 And we are open for business. Hundreds of young people have already painted a leaf at the NATSICC cultural centre whilst learning about First Nations culture and faith.

22.01.2022 It is with sadness that we advise that the NATSICC Council has decided to postpone the Spirituality retreat until 5 - 8 October 2020 (pending the subsidence of the Covid 19 Virus). Given that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are far more vulnerable to the virus and we are expecting a number of Elders, the risk was far too high. Our Elders are the custodians of our culture and knowledge. All is not lost however, we shall regather on the grounds of St Clement’...s in October and enjoy the warmth that Spring in Galong has to offer. Refunds are available to those that already have tickets or bookings can be held over to October.

Fittingly, the theme for this year is - Together in the Spirit. NATSICC will be streaming a National Celebration of the Mass on 5 July - live from the Adelaide Cathedral. You can be part of history by joining us via www.natsicc.org.au Additionally, resources are being developed to assist Parishes, organisations and Schools to c...elebrate this special day. 19.01.2022 Sorry business has been a challenge, and even tougher, for communities during the pandemic. Here is SA’s guide to Sorry Business. Each State and Territory is different so check with your local Health Department.

19.01.2022 https://youtu.be/qsSyfQ4LQP4 With some Parishes reopening (with limited attendees) and schools back across Australia, the scope for local celebrations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday has increased. With this in mind we have developed a resource to help you celebrate with us! We have created a 5 minute virtual Acknowledgement of Country and information presentation that will allow you to pay your respects to the Traditional Custodians of your area - which is im...portant if current restrictions mean you can't have a local Custodian in attendance. Featuring music from Wadeye, the Tiwi Islands and the Torres Strait Islands, the video contains rich imagery of the gifts that First Nations Catholics bring to the Church in Australia. It is the perfect way to set the scene on this important day. Remember to check https://www.natsicc.org.au/2020-atsi-sunday.html for more resources and to join us at 11.30am EST on 5 July for the livestream of our national celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday from St Francis Xavier's Cathedral in Adelaide.

16.01.2022 This week's final reflection: Our Australian Catholic Bishops have walked alongside NATSICC for over 30 years and continue to do so today. We work closely with our own Bishops Commission - the Bishops Commission for Relations with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples (BCRATSI) - the goal being to share our gift of Spirituality with the wider Catholic Church and have those gifts fully embraced. Below you will find a link to the video messages to our communities and to... the wider Catholic Church on the eve of our first ever live streamed national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday celebrations. 15.01.2022 We are very happy to advise that the resources for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday are now available! We have taken some extra time to develop resources that you can use in various settings - including virtual meetings and online Mass celebrations. The 2020 booklet includes:... - Liturgy Suggestions for both First Nations and non Indigenous Congregations - Prayers of the Faithful developed by Aboriginal communities across Australia - Land: A Generation point for existence (Article by Clint McGoldrick) - Homily Notes by Fr Frank Brennan - Tree of Life Youth Activity - Acknowledgment and Welcome Guide A number of additional resources are being uploaded in the lead up to 5 July - including a Parish and School Slideshow, a virtual Acknowledgement and more. https://www.natsicc.org.au/2020-atsi-sunday.html

15.01.2022 Blessings Fr. Leo! From all of us at NATSICC

14.01.2022 Today's reflection focuses on the power of music to lift the spirit. Written and performed by our very own Torres Strait Islands Councillor Dolly McGaughey (pictured), these beautiful hymns evoke the spirit of the Islands. The Roman Catholic Church began its ministries in the Torres Strait when Pope Leo XIII requested that the Sacred Heart Fathers establish a Mission in New Guinea. It was decided among the Fathers that the setting up and servicing of such a Mission would be ...better facilitated if a site was chosen in the Torres Strait. Parishes are now established at (Sacred Heart) Thursday Island, (Holy Family) Horn island, (St Joseph the Worker's Church) Hammond Island and (St Stephen's) Bamaga. Listen here: https://www.natsicc.org.au/2020-atsi-sunday.html#tsihymns Don't forget to join us at 11.30am EST for our National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday Mass - streamed live from St Francis Xavier's Cathedral in Adelaide - www.natsicc.org.au Catholic Archdiocese of Adelaide Australian Catholic Bishops Conference Australian Catholics Catholic News Agency

12.01.2022 We know many schools, Parishes and organisations were unable to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday in July this year, so why not take the opportunity that NAIDOC provides to celebrate the contributions of Australia's First peoples to the Catholic Church in Australia? We have produced a resource booklet to assist in the planning of your celebrations this Sunday - https://www.natsicc.org.au/2020-atsi-sunday.html NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Aust...ralia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. The theme for 2020 is Always Was, Always Will Be. and it recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. We are spiritually and culturally connected to this country. This country was criss-crossed by generations of brilliant Nations. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists.

09.01.2022 Last week we lost our former Northern Territory Councillor and dear friend Cathie Wilson. Her constant smile and down to earth outlook on life was the exterior of a person who, on the inside, was deeply spiritual and faith filled. She had the ability to weave her Culture and Catholic Faith into one and was an integral part of the Council that hosted the 2012 NATSICC Assembly in Darwin. We are deeply saddened by her passing but are comforted in knowing that she is in the arm...s of the Lord and her ancestors. Cathie's funeral will take place at 9am tomorrow at St Mary's Cathedral in Darwin. Please keep Cathie, her family and her friends in your thoughts and prayers, The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Council.

09.01.2022 We want to let you know that all of us at the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Council (NATSICC) are keeping you, your ministries, families and communities in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult and challenging time. We are aware that most Aboriginal and Islander Ministries are closed to visitors and are operating remotely. 06.01.2022 Pope Francis’ Querida Amazonia Beloved Amazonia - has been warmly received by many members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic community. The tone of the exhortation is reflective of the position that underpins our vision for the Church in Australia a Church that is open to the gifts of First Nations Catholics, honest to the past and embracing of a new way of thinking that utilizes the principle of subsidiarity. It will take some time to ‘digest’ and ful...ly understand the implications of Beloved Amazonia but the synod and accompanying document are all leading us to a pivotal time in the global Catholic Church and particularly the Australian Catholic Church. The Church in our Great Southern Land is currently undertaking a Plenary process that carries the hopes and dreams of the 130,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholics. 04.01.2022 Our Second reflection for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday - 5 July

03.01.2022 https://youtu.be/1c3TGYHvX04 NATSICC was honored to be asked to contribute to Australian Embassy to the Holy See’s NAIDOC week acknowledgement. In a short 1 minute video, NATSICC Chairperson John Lochowiak reflected upon the 2020 NAIDOC theme.

02.01.2022 It was with great sadness that NATSICC learned of the recent passing of our friend and former Deputy Chair Joan Hendriks. Current Deputy Chairperson Shirley Quaresimin best expresses our sentiment - "Joan was a proud Indigenous woman and Elder of her people, but also a devoted Catholic who put so much into what NATSICC is today. Many a night we spent in our hotel room working on policy, I'm so glad to have seen her on her country one last time.... Joan you have earned your rest, rest now with your God."

01.01.2022 Holly Roberts YM joined us tonight for Mass at Clontarf College and presented NATSICC Youth Councillor Sabrina Stevens with a very special cross. Adorned with Aboriginal artwork, the Cross was blessed by Pope Francis in Rome earlier this year. It will be a symbol of hope for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholics and will be displayed throughout the 2019 Australian Catholic Youth Festival.

01.01.2022 Each day this week, in the lead up to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday we will be sharing an Image | Video | Song | Discussion piece. Today, Fr Frank Brennan (pictured with Aunty Elsie Heiss) has provided Homily notes for our special day. "St Paul in his Letter to the Romans reminds us that our interests ‘are not in the unspiritual, but in the spiritual, since the Spirit of God has made his home’ in us. In the Uluru Statement from the Heart, Indigenou...s representatives told us that their ‘sovereignty is a spiritual notion: the ancestral tie between the land, or mother nature, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who were born therefrom, remain attached thereto, and must one day return thither to be united with our ancestors." Click here for the full Homily notes: https://www.natsicc.org.au/2020-atsi-sunday.html#hn

01.01.2022 The journey has begun for the NATSICC group at the Australian Catholic Youth Festival. Our group, with young leaders from Northern NSW, Palm Island, Melbourne and Cairns, shared Mass at Clontarf College in preparation for the festival. #acyf2019
