23.01.2022 When we meet for your Initial Naturopathic Consultation, we spend some time identifying and clarifying your health goals. This gives us the ability to plan for and focus on the health outcomes that are most important to you. As your practitioner, in addition to applying my knowledge and skills as a healthcare practitioner, I'm here to provide support and provide accountability, to trouble shoot and to collaborate with you to develop solutions that are the best fit for you and your lifestyle.

23.01.2022 It's definitely hot chocolate weather here in Adelaide today! I love a simple hot chocolate as a treat, this is how I make mine: 1. Place 1 cup of plant milk in a saucepan and warm over a medium/low heat on the stove 2. Add 20g or so of quality dark (70-85%) chocolate & whisk until the chocolate is melted and combined with the milk. 3. Pour into your favourite cup and enjoy!... If I'm feeling like adding something a little extra I might whisk in some chai spice, vanilla and maca, cinnamon or a pinch of chilli.

22.01.2022 Herbal medicine, sometimes known as botanical medicine or phytotherapy, is the use of plants, plant parts and extracts, to treat symptoms and conditions, and to enhance health and wellbeing. Herbal medicine aims to return the body to a state of natural balance, so that it can heal. A vast variety of herbal medicines are available, and different herbs act on different organs, systems, and pathways within the body. ... Herbal remedies may come from any or all parts of the plant - commonly the leaf, flower, stem, seed, root, fruit or bark of the plant are used. Herbal medicines are typically created using the whole plant, rather than isolating a particular constituent, creating a synergistic, complete and balanced medicine. Herbalism supports holistic treatment, with prevention of disease as important as symptomatic treatment of existing conditions. Hormone dysregulation, stress and anxiety, allergic conditions, skin conditions such as eczema and acne, poor detoxification and elimination, metabolic conditions, autoimmune disorders, fatigue and insomnia and colds and flu are just some of a range of conditions that can benefit from the skilful prescription of quality herbal medicines. Herbal medicines are powerful and can act on the same biological pathways as pharmaceutical medications. They may interact with medications and should always be taken under the expert supervision of a qualified herbal medicine practitioner. At Naturae Health, all herbal medicines are prescribed following a comprehensive consultation with qualified Naturopath Ky Wakefield. Each prescription is unique and created to suit your individual requirements. Herbal medicines may be prescribed in a number of forms including liquid herbal extracts, standardise capsules and tablets, powders, teas, tonics, baths, and topical applications such as creams and pessaries. If you would like to know more about how herbal medicine can address your health concerns and support health and well-being, feel free to ask your question in the comments.

21.01.2022 Confession time...I’m often not very good at prioritising rest Many of us have grown up believing that our worth is attached to what we do and how much we achieve. Resting, we have been told, is a waste of time, it’s #lazy Nothing could be further from the truth. ... Our bodies (and minds) require rest to function at their best. Making time for rest will improve your performance and your quality of life There will be times where work tasks take precedence for short, intense periods. This is absolutely normal. However if you have a tendency to consistently overwork, to always keep pushing through, to think ‘I just need to get this done,’ to always put work first, then you can’t be living your best life. Tough but true. For me to create a better balance between work and rest I find it helps to schedule my rest activities in the same way that I schedule my work. Scheduled rest is equally important and non negotiable as scheduled work. Every so often I need to remind myself of this. Over time prioritising rest becomes more intuitive and all areas of life benefit from taking care of yourself xx

21.01.2022 If you've been here for a little while you'll know that I absolutely love veggies, especially all the leafy greens that I flat out refused to eat as a child! This beautiful green leaf with the jewel coloured stems is Swiss chard, actually a member of the same family as beetroot. The leaves are somewhere between spinach and kale in texture, not quite as tough as kale can be but more resilient to cooking that spinach. Swiss chard is a very good source of vitamin K and vitamin ...A, and a good source of vitamin C and the antioxidants alpha and beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and choline. Swiss chard contains high levels of nitrates, which been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce the amount of oxygen needed during exercise, and enhance athletic performance. It's also a good naturally occurring source of sodium, so season lightly when cooking with it. Chard is typically used in cooking in much the same way as spinach is. It can be used raw in salads and the large leaves make excellent wraps. I often saute onions, garlic, chard, chilli and cooked chickpeas in olive oil over a medium heat. Finish with a squeeze of lemon and a drizzle of tahini or yoghurt and a sprinkle of sea salt.

17.01.2022 Is your brain always busy and your head always full of tasks and thoughts and mistakes you made 10 years ago? A busy mind can be distracting and overwhelming, and makes it difficult to focus on what you are doing in the moment. I’d like to share a tool with you that my psychologist uses with busy brain and overwhelmed people to give them some breathing room. He calls it a brain dump ... You will need: 20 minutes Pen Notebook No interruptions Now write whatever pops into your head. This isn’t anything as fancy as a journal, this is the raw material that’s swirling around in your mind. You will probably never look at it again. I often start with ‘Right now I feel...’ Once you run out of words you stop writing, put the notebook away and get on with your life. There is value in starting or finishing your day this way. A good brain dump an hour before bed can help those who struggle to get to sleep due to busy brain Why not pick up a notebook and start tonight? Let me know if it helps

16.01.2022 My organic fruit & veg box from @girlfridayorganics is an absolute winner this week and I’m looking forward to prepping some beautiful #plantbased meals this week

16.01.2022 Women are not small men. This may seem obvious and yet, so much scientific research and so many therapeutic interventions, not to mention entire medical systems are based on the premise that if it works/is tested on a man, then it must also be suitable for a woman. Not so. Women’s health is a passion of mine, and not just because I’m a woman. So often I see women putting their health and wellbeing last on the list of priorities. We have so much going on that we are often n...ot at the centre of our own lives and we ignore the little hints that our body gives us that something may not be quite right. As a holistic healthcare practitioner, I support women in making the most of our beautiful bodies and extraordinary mindsdid I mention I’m passionate about this Many conditions are unique to women or have a much higher prevalence in women. The experience of poor health, sub-optimal wellbeing, and active illness is often different for women. As women, we experience unique social pressures, lifestyle struggles and challenges. Increasingly women are time poor, trying to balance multiple roles partner, parent, employee, entrepreneur, career woman, role model, inspiration, friend, community member, chef, cleaner, driver to name a few. Women may be adversely affected by genetic quirks, poor nutrition, and lifestyle imbalance in unique ways. Healthcare for women needs to be based on an awareness of these issues, as they affect each individual woman. Considering all this it’s easy to see how a personalised, supportive and holistic treatment approach designed with the unique needs of women in mind is not just a pretty good idea, it’s essential to long-term health and wellbeing. If this resonates with you and you would like to get started on your healing journey with us, contact me for a chat.

16.01.2022 Happy International Coffee Day I LOVE coffee and I’m not embarrassed to admit I’m a bit of a coffee snob Because I’m a bit ‘adrenally challenged’ and prone to anxiety I limit myself to one cup of good coffee a day & I enjoy the heck out of it! ... Coffee has a number of potential health benefits including improving memory & mood, improving physical performance, potentially lowering the risk of developing Alzheimer’s, dementia & Parkinson’s disease, lowering the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, providing significant antioxidant protection and reducing the risk of liver & colorectal cancers. Research is these areas is ongoing. Do remember that coffee consumption can increase your experience of anxiety and panic attacks, and may disturb your sleep. Coffee may also raise your blood pressure although this effect is usually temporary. The stimulant effect can cause a feeling of increased fatigue when it dissipates, not great is you are already suffering persistent fatigue. When my anxiety is more present or I’m feeling fatigued I like to mix a half shot of regular coffee with a half shot of decaf...all of the goodness with much less of the undesirable effects. The bottom line? If you like coffee, enjoy quality coffee, in a dose that you tolerate and preferably earlier in the day

16.01.2022 As a Naturopath and Herbalist, everyday I see the power of herbal medicines in action. I felt called to take these amazing botanicals and make them accessible to as many people as possible, and so in 2019 I established @naturae_herbal Tea is therapeutic in many ways. The herbs themselves have thousands of years of use in healing. The ritual of making tea is an act of self-care and mindfulness.... The aroma when you lean in and breathe deeply, capturing the fragrance of nourishing botanicals and signalling to your body it’s time to relax. In a too busy world, tea brings an element of everyday self-care to our lives. Have you tried our Herbal Tea Blends? I'd love to know what you think!

15.01.2022 This week is Natural Medicine Week, a week long celebration of online events and education aimed to raise awareness of the important role natural medicine practitioners play in the health and wellbeing of Australians. Natural Medicine includes a variety of approaches including ingestive therapies (like nutrition & naturopathy), bodywork (such as massage & chiropractic) and Chinese medicine (think acupuncture & Tui Na). While specific approaches will vary, natural therapies place the individual at the heart of all treatments, supporting and correcting in a way that is personalised and collaborative and establishes the conditions for long term wellbeing.

10.01.2022 Mental Health conditions are very common, with almost half of all Australians experiencing a mental illness of some form in their lifetime. There are multiple contributing factors that can lead to deteriorating mental and emotional health so it is important that treatment is holistic and person centred. Naturopathic treatment aims to treat the whole person, identifying causative factors, moving beyond symptomatic treatment and supporting long term wellbeing.... In some cases, gentle Naturopathic interventions may be adequate to restore a person to optimal health, and in others the holistic approach of Naturopathy makes it an excellent adjunctive treatment to conventional interventions. As a Naturopath with both personal and clinical experience in mental health conditions, my approach is: Judgement free Always focussed on your individual needs Supportive my role is to support your choices and to support your personal emotional and physical wellbeing Collaborative I happily work with the other practitioners in your care team Holistic I consider all areas of your life and health and work with you to develop a treatment plan Balanced I respect the role of medications in treatment and I’m mindful of potential interactions Transparent I encourage communicating with your treating Doctor that you are working with a Naturopathic practitioner and that there is full disclosure of any prescribed items Innovative I aim to think outside the box to provide you with the tools that you need, based on your individual circumstances Diverse - treatment may include supported lifestyle change, dietary modification, nutritional therapies, and herbal medicine Comprehensive - I may identify other supportive therapies that can benefit you and will facilitate referral at your request Ethical I am mindful of my scope of practice as a Naturopath and will always assist you in a way that is appropriate and serves your best interests If you are ready to start working on your mental and emotional health, it would be my pleasure to chat with you to provide further information or to discuss how I can support your mental health and wellbeing. A free 15 minute phone consult is the best way to get started, the link to book at the top of this page :-)

09.01.2022 Today’s quote is a reminder to me (and you too) to take one day at a time and some encouragement to rest your mind in the present moment and let the future take care of itself xx

08.01.2022 Today is #mentalhealthday and the beginning of a weeklong focus on an often overlooked and critically underfunded and under supported area of healthcare Mental Health Week is an annual, national event that aims to improve community awareness and interest in mental health and wellbeing. It is an opportunity to have conversations with your friends, family and community about mental health and wellbeing This year particularly, isolation, loneliness and fear have triggered and e...xacerbated mental health problems in many of us I am a passionate advocate for mental health awareness and support, having experienced anxiety and depression myself for over thirty years and having seen many people I love dearly struggle to receive the acknowledgment, diagnosis and support that they need I look forward to sharing tips, resources and stories with you this coming week xx This beautiful portrait is by Jessica Miller

08.01.2022 My #mentalhealthweek tip for today is related to food & nutrition When we are experiencing acute mental or emotional distress it will often affect our appetite, food choices and nutritional intake. Making good choices, shopping and cooking can be overwhelming My simple tip for today is to focus on eating one nutritious meal every day ... :: think about what time of the day you usually feel the best, this is the time for your healthy meal :: choose quick to make meals. The meal featured here took about 10 minutes to make :: you do not need to make everything from scratch. Here I’ve used @yumisdips zucchini balls & beetroot dip because it’s quick, they’re pretty healthy, delicious & the colour of beet dip makes me happy :: it’s fine to use pre-cut or frozen veggies. It’s ok to use quality tinned foods. It’s ok to order in healthy options. It’s ok to shop online for your food. It’s ok to use your microwave - just don’t use plastic or plastic wrap, choose ceramic please :: if shopping & cooking is too much, use a food delivery service to have that one health giving meal a day delivered to your door. I like @livesoulara :: half your plate is veggies. This can be salad mix, bagged veggie mix, frozen veg, pre-cut veg, quick cook goodies like broccolini and asparagus. Choose what you like & what is easy :: quarter of your plate is protein. Again choose whatever you fancy. I often choose tinned beans or chickpeas (I always keep organic/BPA free tinned beans in my pantry), nuts, seeds, tofu and chickpea tempeh are go to options for me as a vegan. If you eat animal protein the same organic/wild caught/BPA standard is a good rule of thumb for tinned fish. Many supermarkets also have pre cooked or quick cook meats :: quarter of your plate is starchy veg like sweet potato, potato, grains rice, noodles or pasta. Your gut bugs will love you if you choose whole grain options :: add a little fat. I like nuts, seeds, avocado or olive, hemp, avocado and coconut oil :: I usually chuck pretty much everything in one pan with some olive oil, garlic, salt & cook it over a medium heat & garnish with seeds or avocado What’s your go to easy healthy meal?

06.01.2022 It’s self care Sunday and this #plantmama is making the most of the Spring weather and spending a big chunk of time tending to my #indoorplantbabies I’ll also be visiting a friend and cranking out some basic food prep to set me up to eat well this week What are you doing to care for yourself today?

05.01.2022 Fear is one of our strongest emotions. It is designed to make us sharp, get us moving, protect us from danger. Fear has a very powerful effect on our bodies. Anxiety is often fear driven. In fact, anxiety is often the word we use when we describe fear of something that may happen, a future threat or something that we think may go wrong in the future. For some people anxiety can lead to being overwhelmed with future fears, and results in avoidance behaviour which limits exper...iencing new things, curiosity, adventure and enjoyment of life. Practicing remaining in the present is a useful tool to tackle this ‘future forecasting’ anxiety behaviour. Noticing when you are thinking of or focussed on potential future problems and gently and without judgement bringing your thoughts back to the present moment is a simple but powerful mindfulness practice that is beneficial in both acute and chronic anxiety conditions. This practice takes a moment, and like all habits gets easier and becomes more natural when used regularly. There are numerous guided mindfulness practices on Apps like insight timer, calm and smiling mind which are really helpful for getting you started. On a personal note, practicing bringing my busy, worrying, overachieving mind back to the present is one of the most beneficial things I’ve done to manage my anxiety. It’s helped me to be more self-aware, to be kinder to my mind and to learn to let go of things that I can’t control. All of these are ongoing processes by the way, every day presents it’s challenges and that’s why having simple, effective and easy to implement tools to support our mental health is so important.

04.01.2022 Working from home has its perks I love having my main meal at lunchtime On the menu today are asparagus, edamame & baby spinach stir fried in olive oil, chilli & salt brown rice, hemp seeds, spicy kimchi & a big squeeze of lemon juice ... Plenty of fibre, plant protein, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants & ready in less than 10 minutes

04.01.2022 Today is World Gratitude Day This day is designed to encourage mindful appreciation of the good things in our lives, to be thankful for our blessings Did you know that practicing gratitude is good for your health? Being thankful can reduce stress, improve sleep, improve your immune function, improve self esteem and reduce symptoms of depression. Gratitude has been shown to improve professional communication and social skills, and to contribute to better physical and emo...tional wellbeing. Keen to benefit from gratitude practice? Why not start and finish each day by writing down three things that you’re grateful for, or share something that you’re grateful for each night at family dinner

01.01.2022 All the good, green things for lunch today I like to fill half my plate with veggies, then add some protein & healthy fats to balance my meal.
