21.01.2022 Recently, a family were overwhelmed with the amount of flowers received, despite asking for donations in lieu of flowers- friends did both! This has been a common experience during Covid19. . We suggested they bring all the arrangements to the service. They lay them around below the coffin. At the burial we all helped remove packaging, plastics etc and dressed the bottom of the grave to create a bed of flowers and greenery before she was laid to rest. It was a si...mple and satisfying act and visually spectacular. . Choosing flowers for a funeral is such a personal experience. . We will often ask families if the person who has died had a connection to their garden or particular flowers. . Some people have a connection to their local florist or we can recommend a florist that practices sustainably. . You can always bring flowers from your garden or some florists will forage in your garden to make arrangements. Your friends and family may want to bring flowers or greenery from home as an act of love. . The options are endless and this is another example of holistic care. We have witnessed funerals where almost every guest arrives with a plate in hand. They quickly fill the empty trestle tables we set down the centre of a room. Plates of all shapes and sizes and each with a love story. Perhaps a favourite dish of the farewelled person. . It’s extraordinary the energy that it brings to a room and at the end, everyone usually leav...es with their plate with a few goodies from someone else’s plate and no one needs to worry about dinner that night! . Sometimes ‘bringing a plate’ is a way that people can support the immediate family in a meaningful and practical way. . By all means, catering in a venue is fabulous too, but don’t forget about the tradition of community. .
