13.01.2022 Please check out Coastal Waste Warriors by my beautiful friend Kirstin. Hope to see you at the beach clean up

11.01.2022 A massive thank you to our Coastal Waste Warrior Crew who came along to our second beach clean up this morning along both sides of the Dawesville Cut. We had an...other great turnout of 44 volunteers with a lot of new faces. We were better prepared this time with a new system where each clean up team worked in pairs or more keeping a tally of litter as they found it on our data sheets which made it less overwhelming at the conclusion of the clean up. I’m sorry to report that this clean up found even more than the last. A total of 20 bags weighing a total of 110kgs! But on a positive note this is 110kgs of rubbish we have stopped from entering our ocean putting our marine & bird life at risk. We are really lacking in waste facilities in the area along with people who have no respect for our environment leaving their rubbish along the pathways and stuffed in between the rocks - unfortunately with the time we had we couldn’t pick all of it up or access it in the low lying rock areas. The top 10 types of litter picked up was: Cigarette butts: 1816 Fishing line: 408 meters Plastic food packaging: 209 Broken glass: 182 Plastic bits & pieces hard & solid: 155 Paper & cardboard packaging: 122 Aluminium cans: 103 Plastic drink bottles: 90 Glass beer stubbies & premix bottles: 84 Bait & tackle bags: 74 For full results see the last few photos in this post. Thank you to local businesses Coconesia and The Glass Jar for donating the giveaway prizes raising awareness of eliminating single use plastics in our own lives and reducing our waste. Thank you to all of our volunteers and attendees from local groups Falcon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Estuary Guardians Mandurah, Dudley Dolphin and the Dolphin Buddy Club.& @men of the trees. It’s great to be able to connect with our community to make a positive impact together! The data from our cleanups is input into the Tangaroa Blue Australian Marine Debris Initiative database. More effective than cleaning up beaches is preventing rubbish from ending up there in the first place. Through the AMDI Database Tangaroa Blue can identify issues and then work with communities, industry and government to address the problem which can include improved infrastructure such as rubbish bins and anti littering campaigns etc. #coastalwastewarriors #tangaroablue #cityofmandurah #keepaustraliabeautifulwa #cleanupaustralia #donotlitter #pickitupandbinit
