25.01.2022 I’d like you to meet Kim & Tex..... They’ve been coming to me for a little while now. Tex had some body issues that Kim was addressing, but my job was getting her to take the spurs off this horse that had no forward, and start getting them both connected and listening to each other. Kim has done an amazing job and is really beginning to find their true potential together, be that trail riding or chasing cows!
25.01.2022 Just thought I’d share with you all some true craftsmanship.......beautiful work TE Able.
24.01.2022 Another fantastic flat out week of lessons, great clients and beautiful horses. The owner of this gorgeous little mare told me she’d never been able to get a trot with her head down.......... This video was taken at the end of our first lesson on Wednesday this week. (I WISH I had got some footage from the first couple of minutes!)... Quite often we can over complicate things for our horses by asking too many things at the same time. We need to simplify the conversation we’re having with them to avoid them overreacting, getting anxious and confused. In the case of this mare, we just had to isolate the one thing we wanted, which was the relaxed head carriage, and then just guide her to it. Allow HER to find the right answer, and discover how good it felt! Great job, and perseverance by the rider too
24.01.2022 ******ALL PLACES BOOKED***** This Saturday (Nov 7th) a few of my regulars have other commitments (other than horses! ) So from 11:00am onwards if you’d like to make a time to come by our property near Yackandandah, I’d be happy to help you connect and communicate gently with your horse. 0418 578939
23.01.2022 After just a week of training, Lawsy had his owner Meg drop by to see his progress. It’s one thing I insist on. If I have a horse here, I want the owner to make regular visits for lessons to ensure that horse AND rider are travelling and learning together.......
23.01.2022 I thank my horse Rusty every day.......he helps make me not only a better horseman.... but a better person.
23.01.2022 Just another wonderful week, surrounded by great people and amazing horses...... and me, wishing I took more photos and video for the week....again
23.01.2022 So after two weeks, it’s time for Lawsy (Woodstock Smokin’ Outlaw) to head home. Meg came by this morning for a lesson, just to make sure these two are on the same page, and for me to give them some homework to keep moving forward. With my aim of building confidence in both horse AND rider, I think you’ll see in this short video that the connection is there. With that connection comes the understanding and trust. The longer this free-flowing conversation continues, the more confidence will grow.
22.01.2022 Have a look at this beautiful little mare! Dawn searched high and low for this horse, and when she finally found her I remember saying if you don’t buy her...I will! So they’ve been together a while now and Dawn asked if she could come over for her first lesson under saddle (we have done some groundwork lessons with other horses in the past) but today we just wanted to work on their communication. Now one thing I say quite often to people is that in some cases, to open the... lines of communication there first has to be quiet..... You will see in the first part of the clip, Dawn is trying to communicate with Sophie through the reins to relax and lower her head. Nothing wrong with that, quite common practice. Thing is, the message isn’t understood and Sophie flicks her head around to say I’m not really sure what you want! To start an understanding, the first thing I asked Dawn to do was just let go..... loose rein, just let her travel. From there, where we have little or no input, we can add one thing and it will be heard. Imagine two people that speak different languages, yelling at one another about how to do something. The only way anything is going to come of that is if they both become silent, then perhaps one speaks calmly with hand gestures and facial expression etc. And so it begins..... I see my training of horses a bit the same way. Sometimes, you just have to quiet. Sometimes, you just need to stay out of their way, then quietly......ask. My favourite Ray Hunt quote..... First we go with them, then they go with us, and then we go together So as the clip goes on, you see Sophie start to lower her head, swing those hind legs through, relax, loose rein, but with the occasional ask to bend...And so it begins... You’re very passionate about your horses Dawn, and i love that. I appreciate you bringing your gorgeous girl to me and allowing me to help you on your way. I hope to see you both again soon
22.01.2022 I don’t think I pay you enough Joanne Hill
22.01.2022 ******ALL LESSONS BOOKED - SAT 7th****** Thanks everyone for the fantastic response. For those of you that called but couldn’t find a suitable time, please stay in touch. I look forward to working with all of you in the near future.
21.01.2022 Looking forward to another beautiful day full of lessons, learning and wonderful horses
21.01.2022 This really resonates with me. I think it’s well worth sharing, from an inspirational woman.....Thanks Maddy.
20.01.2022 Sometimes...... even when you’re a nice guy....... you can’t just expect everyone to like you! This poor mare has some issues and has been a real handful over the past few weeks for her loving owners. I worked with her a few weeks back with some basic groundwork and she was quite nice, but since there’s been a huge change in her behaviour. I straight away thought of ulcers, so the vet was called but unable to get near her. From her behaviour traits the vet put her on the ul...cer medication. With aggression like this though, I’m fearing it could be something more serious. Unfortunately this is 2mths into first horse ownership for these people Not the nicest way to end the day. See more
19.01.2022 Quite often I get asked to help people with float loading lessons, and the reply is always.... You know it’s not actually about the float. That’s the thing, it’s not about the float. It’s about your relationship and communication with your horse. Float loading is nothing but Advanced Groundwork. If you raise your hand and point, does your horse understand that you want them to walk that way. Not necessarily march forward bravely into a scary dark tin cave on wheels (altho...ugh that would be nice, and they eventually will), but to just take one step forward. After all, that’s how they’ll get in there......one step at a time. Self loading is important. If a horse walks into a float willingly on their own, you know they’re thinking IN the float. Horsemanship is all about working WITH a horse to make our thoughts, their thoughts. When we lead a horse into a trailer, they follow us in.....and then we step out leaving them there. Ever thought your horse then says to themselves Hey! Hang on! I only walked in here because I was following you and now YOU’RE jumping out and leaving me!? Similar thing when we bribe them in with food or treats. Pretty soon they’ll change their mind or decide the food reward’s not worth STAYING in the float for! Exit, stage rear!!! There’s nothing special about my method of asking a horse onto a float ....notice I didn’t say GETTING a horse on a float? That’s because I’m asking them on... offering them an option. They don’t have to go on. They have a choice. I’ll never stop them from backing off if I know they’ve made their mind up and they’re getting off. When they get off, I won’t punish them for that decision. I’ll just take that opportunity to do some more groundwork training. And that’s the important bit. You can’t punish them. You can’t be thinking RIGHT! I’ll teach you for getting off that float when I need you on and at my dressage lesson in 26 minutes!!!! You just take an opportunity to practice moving their feet before OFFERING THEM another option......Would you like to go stand quietly in the float? Anyway, have a look at the video and let me know your thoughts........
19.01.2022 Thank you Chris, you’re too kind We just love having people visit our property here in beautiful Wooragee, bringing their own horses and spend time with ours. We get such a thrill from helping people chase their equine dreams, and as you know, we sometimes enlist our own personal horses to help inspire someone to dream bigger. Really looking forward to watching your journey mate
17.01.2022 My daughter Taya having a play around today with a pony she’s training up. Hopefully ready for sale next month. He learning fast, and starting to calm down nicely. Taking the time it takes
17.01.2022 Here’s a good little story...... I’ve known Jenny for a while now. She initially asked me to work with Blue, her previous horse. That went well, but Blue was getting on so Jen was on the hunt for a younger horse. So she purchased Buddy..... site unseen, off some dodgey trainer over on the coast that basically posted an Ad and video full of lies. ... Anyway, Buddy turned up, under weight, poor condition, obviously miss treated and scared of his own shadow......nothing like the ad (which I reckon was recorded some time ago!) Now most people would’ve crack it. Called the guy, told him the thing was back on the truck heading back his way and a refund better be coming!...... but not Jenny. This amazing lady (who, by the way, is no amazingly confident rider.....She won’t mind me saying that ) SHE, says Buddy’s not getting sent back to the person that did this to him, and she’ll keep him. I’ve gotta say, when I first met Buddy I was completely honest with Jen, saying this was not going to be a quick fix. He needed a lot of time, and a lot of body work. (THANK YOU Pam Martin!) I was SO happy when I left Jenny’s this morning. Perfect start to my day seeing Buddy trot for the FIRST time with his head hanging relaxed!! It’s been a long road so far, and we’ve still got a ways to go but, tomorrow’s another opportunity to take another step forwards..... Maybe Buddy will, maybe he won’t. But I know Jen will be with him either way it goes. That’s what horsemanship is all about.
15.01.2022 Word. It’s not about the Horse.
15.01.2022 I feel these two deserve Special mention. When I first met Bridget and Mason some months ago, they had parted ways at various places and paces, none of which ended well for Bridget! Mason was a very complex little fella, and lesser people would’ve thrown in the towel and gone looking for another one.... but not Bridge! Mason was VERY zoned out with his thoughts. I actually think he’d forget that you were on his back! when he did realise you were...... he decided he didn...’t want you there And then..... there was his back up I hear many had tried! Trainers...Clinics........ Credit where credit is due, Bridget stuck with him and now, she’s reaping the rewards. A relaxed, responsive, SMART, trainable horse, that I believe now just loves to learn. It was my first trail ride out with them yesterday morning. Bridget has reported that they’ve been going well, but this confirmed it. What a dude! Thank you so much for trusting me to be part of your journey back. You’ve made me very happy seeing where you are now..... TOGETHER.
15.01.2022 Just wanted to say THANK YOU to all my amazing clients, and wish each of you a relaxing, happy Christmas & New Year. I never take my job for granted and feel so privileged that you allow me into your lives and the opportunity to assist you along your equine journey. I look forward to 2021 with big plans for the future, and wish nothing but contentment and success for all of you. ... I wish I could include every one of you and your beautiful horses in this video, but here is but a sample of the last twelve months of wonderful lessons...........
14.01.2022 I had a memory pop up on Facebook this morning. I can't believe it's been two and a half years since I started Evie for my daughter Taya! So here's a little summary of that time past. The journey that started with a dream. The dream I think most of us have inside of us. That little kid that just wants to get on and ride.... No saddle or bridle. Not a care in the world. Just be totally there. Connection and trust. It's funny, but every horse I get to work with in this job, no matter where they're at when I first meet them, they all have IT........ The potential to play a part in somebody's dream.
13.01.2022 ****THANKS EVERYONE! Spot filled **** SATURDAY LESSON : ONE SPOT AVAILABLE!! 9:00 - 10:30 ... This Saturday at our arena only (Sorry, no time for me to travel between lessons, so you’d have to come to me) First in!
12.01.2022 Rusty, like me, VERY happy to finally see the sun after the last 7 days has yielded 72mm in a mix of rain, sleet & SNOW A HEAP of cancellations this week due to the weather, which has been so frustrating. I’m really enjoying seeing the great progress of my clients and their horses. It’s on the improve from tomorrow, so next week we’re back into it again! Look forward to seeing everyone.... If you need some help, don’t hesitate to get in contact as I’d love to help you improve your connection and understanding with your horses.
12.01.2022 I don’t think horses get much better than this!

07.01.2022 Day 1 of 7 Day Lockdown here in Victoria...... A day of having to cancel all appointments (which is quite sad ) and rescheduling. Hopefully 7 days will do the trick. See everyone on the other side. Rusty and I miss you already!
06.01.2022 I constantly talk to clients during lessons about the importance of being aware of what we’re doing whilst in the presence of our horses......any horse. Don’t get too distracted by what the horse does. And don’t worry. Remember.... Worrying is just betting against yourself. The horse is purely reacting to what you’re doing.....so concentrate on that.
05.01.2022 Cold, miserable day but we still managed to have some fun
05.01.2022 I’m not really into the Americanised Halloween rubbish. Be good if tomorrow was remembered for something more significant Take a minute everyone.........
04.01.2022 Lawsy got his cues mixed up today He’s a good boy, always trying to please and just an absolute pleasure to be around this horse #WoostockPaintHorses
03.01.2022 Walking over a noisey timber platform that takes 1-2secs is cool for some horses...... but ask them to stand still ON the noisey timber platform can sometimes, be a bridge too far But things can become clearer to our horses when we offer them choices that allow them to have a say in the conversation. I could drive this horse to the platform and put pressure behind her until she gives in to that. Then once she’s up there I could block her forward movement to make her stay up... there. Or, I can offer her choices. If she’s not comfortable, allow her to move away. It has to be a continuous, gentle, encouraging conversation. We must listen and HEAR what our horses are telling us. When we start hearing them, they become more aware that we are listening. Having her choose to stand and relax on this platform is no different really to float loading. They have to want to do things for you, but for them too.
03.01.2022 I’m lucky enough to get the opportunity to work with some beautiful horses. Here, is just one example, Lenny. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Lenny and his owner for a while now, and it’s pretty hard not to get a bit attached to him. I turned up to the lesson this morning thinking that Lenny was at that place.... where his body and thoughts are right there, in the same spot, with the rider.... So, at the end of the lesson in less than 10mins I went from bridled to bridle-less, and Lenny being Lenny, just took it in his stride. Sometimes you get to a point.....You ask your horse to trust you, when what you really need to do........is trust your horse.
03.01.2022 I can’t stress enough the importance of what Grace is doing here. The anxiety under saddle, the rearing, spinning, bolting that some horses exhibit is very often the result of one thing....... a lack of true connection. We need to backtrack. Stop trying to dominate, stop trying to give the orders, stop thinking that our horse is being disrespectful, misbehaving and just quietly ask them.....Can you hear me?... Is your horse hearing you? Are they checking in with you, or do they forget you’re standing there? I often see people trying to address problems from in the saddle because........that’s where they see and encounter the problem. What surprises people is how often problems disappear after working on other things that would sometimes seem unrelated. Groundwork, for example. Not lunging.... but good, solid, quality, CONNECTED, groundwork. Groundwork to where you can move you horses feet on a suggestion, to where your horse weighs nothing, where your horse looks to you for guidance. Where there’s TRUST. Then FEEL the difference.
01.01.2022 A Lesson slot has become available tomorrow, Saturday 14th, between 1:00 - 2:30 0418 578939 if your interested
