25.01.2022 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ACID-LOWERING MEDICATIONS Acid lowering medications are some of the most widely prescribed drugs worldwide, yet an increasing amount of research highlights the negative health effects of these medications for both people and pets when used long-term. This includes increased risk of bone fractures, pneumonia and other upper respiratory tract infections, diarrhoea, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease and dementia - just to name a few! In this episode I explain what acid-lowering medications are, why a doctor or a vet might prescribe them, and ways that you can minimise the side effects and heal any damage already done via diet, lifestyle and targeted supplementation.

24.01.2022 Another amazing opportunity to get the dog health message out there!! This coming Saturday (the 12th) I talk with Lara Shannon about carbohydrates and sugar in commercial dog foods. So tune in to Pooches at Play from 1:55pm on Channel 10. And if you love it so much that you want to watch it again you can catch the reply on Sunday on 10BOLD at 4pm! Of course it wouldn't be a photo shoot without Busta!

24.01.2022 When I'm busy working 7 days/week and have no time (or desire) for meal prep - I LOVE that I can just easily grab some Big Dog and trust that my dog's diet's aren't being compromised (although Pet Stock were out of several flavours due to a freezer malfunction :-( ) Raw food feeding doesn't have to be complicated or time consuming - just go with what works for you at the time

23.01.2022 Have you considered Saccharomyces boulardii for immune and gut health? If not, read on ... Just some of the health benefits of S. boulardii include - Protects against gut pathogens... Reduces antibiotic-induced diarrhoea Modulates the immune response Decreases inflammation in a wide range of disorders Inhibits bacterial toxins Enhances the gut’s natural enzymes and nutrient transporters Increases one of our most important gut immune compounds, Secretory IgA (SIgA) In regards to the last point, in both people and dogs, SIgA is our first line of defence against invading microbes and is key to maintaining mucosal homeostasis and integrity. It is the main immunoglobulin found in any of the mucous membranes of the body (think eyes, mouth, nose, lungs, gastrointestinal tract etc). S. boulardii is safe for both people and dogs, and we can easily buy it as a supplement with or without other probiotic species. There are lots of different brand options (both retail and practitioner-only), so if you're not sure, send me a message and I can recommend one for you :-)

23.01.2022 My beautiful Bug She has overcome so much in the past 12 months following her spinal surgery. Prognosis was that she’d never walk again - but they completely underestimated her spirit!

22.01.2022 DIGESTIVE ENZYMES Scrolling through the internet you'll come across extreme views on digestive enzymes, especially when it comes to our dogs. Some sites say they do nothing and could even be harmful. Other sites say that every dog should take them everyday for their entire lives. Who's right? In this episode I discuss the ins-and-outs of digestive enzymes for both people and pets - what are they, the different types, causes of enzyme deficiency, how to know if you nee...d one, food and supplemental sources, along with applications for both people and dogs. But digestive enzymes may not be for everyone, so I also highlight who shouldn't take them. https://podcasts.apple.com//episode-8-digest/id1527172504 See more

19.01.2022 Recently I had the privilege of appearing on Channel 10's Pooches at Play where I chatted with Lara Shannon about leaky gut in dogs, its role in allergies and how feeding a raw food diet can help. All the details in the video below

19.01.2022 Grain-free dog food doesn't mean carb free! And like with people, high carb diets can lead to a number of different health problems for ours dogs, the top two being obesity and diabetes.

16.01.2022 Eggs are a great source of nutrition for dogs. Most people will only feed chicken eggs, but if you have access to duck eggs, it's always good to mix things up. This article outlines the differences between chicken and duck eggs. It's written for humans, but just as readily applies to our dogs as well :-)

15.01.2022 That’s one happy kitty in his pod by the heater #burmesecatsofinstagram #sleepingcat #happycat #naturalhealthandnutrition

15.01.2022 In Episode 4, I highlighted the dangers of consuming too much rice (for us and our dogs) due to the high arsenic levels. A new paper, published just last month, shows that cooking rice in a certain way removes over 50% of the naturally occurring arsenic in brown rice, and 74% in white rice. Importantly, this new method does not reduce micronutrients in the rice. I've linked the original paper below. There is a more reader-friendly version linked in the comments. :-) ... https://reader.elsevier.com/reader/sd/pii/S0048969720368728

15.01.2022 ‘COMPLETE & BALANCED’ - CAN YOU TRUST IT? We regularly hear the term ‘complete and balanced’ when it comes to dog nutrition, but what does ‘complete and balanced’ mean and can we trust that it’s providing our dogs with optimal health? In this episode we explore what ‘complete and balanced’ really means, the methods companies can use to get that claim on their product label, and how feeding a food labelled as ‘complete and balanced’ is not a failsafe to keeping our dogs health...y long term. https://podcasts.apple.com//natural-health-f/id1527172504

12.01.2022 Following on from my podcast on rice for diarrhoea, the following website provides an easy to read overview of the types of rice that are lower in arsenic as well as naming other grains that contain little or no arsenic. For those who want more details about the health risks of inorganic arsenic in rice, I will attach some papers in the comments section. Although these studies relate to humans - particularly infants and children, we have to remember that the same health risk...s apply to our dogs as well. The new research highlights that infants and children especially, should not be eating large amounts of rice on a daily basis due to the long term health risks. Unfortunately, many popular kibbles contain rice as a main ingredient and this is what our dogs are eating every day for their entire lives. Food for thought! https://www.consumerreports.org//how-much-arseni/index.htm

12.01.2022 Trying to find some time to read, but the dogs have other ideas! #frenchbulldog #lapdog #feedingdogs #naturalhealthandnutrition

11.01.2022 A great paper from 2013 that presents the evidence for the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases that arise from the contemporary canine diet (aka kibble). There is increasing evidence that advanced glycation end products underlie much of the inflammation associated with cancers and other chronic diseases in both humans and dogs. The author suggests that a more species-appropriate, anti-inflammatory whole foods diet is what our dogs should be eating to reduce the inciden...ce of chronic disease, including cancer. http://www.veterinaryworld.org/Vol.6/Sept-2013/10.pdf

10.01.2022 Highly nutritious for both us and our dogs :-)

10.01.2022 Many of the dog owners I help express concerns about the use of commercial flea and tick products. Dr Karen Becker highlights some of the dangers, and provides same safer alternatives that you can try.

09.01.2022 My dogs love Big Dog Even though I make a lot of my dogs raw meals, I always have a stash of Big Dog patties in my freezer for when life gets in the way! :-)

09.01.2022 Noooooo....... Following on from my podcast outlining the high arsenic content in rice, it seems that some types of wine may also contain unsafe levels of arsenic. :-(

08.01.2022 Whenever I have to look something up in this textbook the song from the Huggies TV ad - 'It must be love' - always plays in my mind!! I don't think I'll ever stop loving hardcopy text books - digital versions just aren't the same!

08.01.2022 Tune in to Pooches at Play from 1:50pm today on channel 10 as I discuss the benefits of raw food feeding and how owners can start the process of transitioning their dogs from kibble to raw.

04.01.2022 We’ve all grown up hearing that we should give our dogs chicken and rice during bouts of diarrhoea, but why? In this episode we explore the use of rice for diarrhoea how it came about, why it works, is it helpful or harmful, and are there better alternatives?

04.01.2022 Probiotics provide all sorts of powerful benefits for us and our dogs. Getting probiotics from supplements is popular, but you can also get them from fermented foods. When starting to incorporate fermented foods into your diet or your dogs diet - start small and build up over time. This will help to minimise any gastrointestinal upset!

03.01.2022 Of all the curious, definitely-not-human behaviours dogs exhibit, coprophagia (poo eating) is perhaps the most-researched by dog owners. I regularly get asked about the underlying causes of coprophagia, and this article provides a great overview.

02.01.2022 A great article - even if you just read the 10 take-home points.

01.01.2022 There are so many simple things that we can do every day to support our mental well-being #naturalhealthandnutrition

01.01.2022 Seems I have dogs on my mind this morning .... Writing up a human client's treatment plan, I wrote 'anal glands' instead of 'adrenal glands'! That would have been an interesting conversation!

01.01.2022 Happy 4th birthday to our amazing and courageous Ladybug. She’s been through so much and still fights on with so much passion and enthusiasm.
