20.01.2022 My lovely colleague at Yandina Dental alerted me to the fact that it was World Chocolate Day this week!! I'm not ashamed to admit that I am a hopeless chocohol...ic!! I can easily devour a family size bar of chocolate in one sitting and enjoy every last mouthful!! Sadly, the sugar content in chocolate isn't so great for the waistline or teeth, or blood sugar...the list goes on. I had to find an alternative, so now my nightly fix is this scrumptious treat, dairy free, processed sugar free, hot chocolate; Blend together 4 or 5 dates, two dessert spoons cacao, cashew nuts and a little water. I like to heat this up in a saucepan and sometimes make it really thick so it's like a pudding, the best part is, the fat content makes it so filling I'm never left wanting more #worldchocolateday

18.01.2022 I haven't spoken about mouth breathing for a while so I thought it was time to write another post about this important topic. Do any of you know a child or ad...ult who sleeps like the girl in the picture? Perhaps you do?? Why do I talk so much about the negative effects of Mouth breathing?? Because mouth breathing is a sign your body isn't getting enough oxygen. Without getting too technical, the body of a mouth breather or snorer is always under stress, this means cortisol levels are likely to be elevated and you might constantly feel stressed or on high alert. A mouth breather is also likely to have crowded teeth....interesting how many clues the human body leaves isn't it?? There are many ways to manage and treat mouth breathing and usually it's a collaborative team approach. www.vitalitydentaltuggerah.com.au See more

18.01.2022 Why MINDFUL EATING really matters!! Our body has two nervous systems, The Sympathetic and Parasympathetic. The first takes care of flight and fight type responses. It becomes active when we are in stressful situations, the second is necessary for subconsious functions such as breathing and digesting our food. These two systems cannot be effective if they are both active at the same time. If you eat on the go or while you are stressed and angry your parasympathetic system i...s unable to effectively function. This means that your food will not be well digested. Consequences could be indigestion, heartburn, failure to effectively absorb nutrients and in general just feeling crappy. If you simply must multi task ....(and hey who doesn't have too at times) at least take a few slow deep breaths before and during your meal, this helps turn on that parasympathetic system. vitalitydentaltuggerah.com.au Taking care of your whole body through your mouth!!

17.01.2022 In recent years we have seen a lot more science emerge about the link between the gut and the brain. This connection is not only fascinating but it completely changes the way we can treat disease. For example depression can be a disease of a poor gut microbiome, not necessarily in all cases, but it provides another avenue for treatment as 90% of Serotonin, one of the 'happy neurotransmitters' is produced in the gut. Gum disease and a weak immune system can also be a sign of ...a distressed gut. Nursing your gut back to health can be a long process but a good start is to practice mindfulness, even a few deep breaths a day to help centre your mind can be a good start. Also keep your diet rich in 'real' food. The type that grows in the ground or once roamed the earth or swam in the ocean!! Happy gut = happy mind and body!! vitalitydentaltuggerah.com.au #mouthbodyconnection - - -#vitalitydentaltuggerah #tuggerahdental #nutrition #totalbodyhealth #mindbodyhealth #holisticdentistcentralcoast #holistichealth #tuggerahbusiness #biologicaldentistry #centralcoastdentist #visitTuggerah #Marinersbuilding #centralcoastmariners #nutritiontuggerah

12.01.2022 As with any job....sometimes being a dentist is not so great. People are scared and the procedures we perform can be tricky and complex. But, to receive these... flowers of appreciation from a patient who had for her whole life been embarrassed to smile and was previously terrified of the dentist really touched my heart. The feeling that you've made a difference in someone's life is the best!! See more

07.01.2022 What is the relationship between these two images? The man on the left is snoring and possibly suffers sleep apnoea, which means he actually stops breathing du...ring the night. In the last post I wrote about the link between chronic mouth breathing and a lack of oxygenation. The picture on the right shows a man holding his heart. The heart of a chronic snorer has to work harder to pump blood throughout the body. When a muscle works harder, it gets bigger. This is a good thing if we are talking about our biceps, but the heart is not a muscle we want to enlarge. An enlarged heart has a greater risk of heart attack. This can occur in both men and women. Snoring is an alarm telling you all is not well in your bodydo not ignore it! At Vitality we have extensive training to help guide you back on the path to health www.vitalitydentaltuggerah.com.au
