23.01.2022 LEADING When teaching a horse to lead safely, the most important thing is to have the horses respect so it learns to give you your space. this means the horse isn’t running into you or over you by using their shoulder to push through. Instead, they're watching you attentively waiting for your next move and are calmly moving at your pace, whether that be a fast walk or a slow one. If a horse does not respect your space from the ground, you cannot expect them to respect you fro...m the saddle. This is Bam Bam, a 17h thorough bred who has just retired from racing and begun his training to become a casual riding horse. The main focus for Bam Bam at the moment is leading, as he had no respect for the person leading him and would use his shoulder to push through. This is Bam Bam's third session that has focused on leading, as you can see form the video he is giving me my space by not leaning on me with his shoulder, and following at a sensible distance where he can stop himself if I happen to stop suddenly. You can also see him giving way to me as I turn to my left into his path. He is very attentive, moving his hindquarters away at my slightest signal. The lead rope is not an important part of earning your horses respect as can be seen when he continues to follow me respectfully when I take the rope off him, you are the one the horse must learn to respect. 01.01.2022 RELEASE When working with horses, understanding when to release is a crucial detail. This is Bess, an ex-trotter who, in this video I had only recently broken to the saddle and introduced to liberty groundwork. With the use of pressure and timely release, as you can see she has become very willing and calm in work.
