23.01.2022 Researchers in the United States are trying to ascertain the quantity of non-nutritive sweeteners that children are consuming. It's currently estimated that one in four children are exposed to these sweeteners, but only 23% of parents can correctly identify them on food labels. More than half of parents seek out foods labeled as reduced sugar, but are unaware of how they are sweetened. There is now concern that these sweeteners which are 180 to 20,000 times sweeter than suga...r, may alter appetite and taste preferences, as well as the gut microbiome, leading to changes in blood glucose levels and contribute to metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, diabetes and weight gain. Findings are inconsistent, and researchers need to know how much food products contain to determine health effects. https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_re/2019-10/aaop-aa101819.php See more

22.01.2022 In the clinic lately, Ive seen an increase in the number of people presenting with autoimmune conditions. Coeliac disease, type 1 diabetes, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis are just some of the more common conditions that I see in clinic. As you can see, autoimmune conditions vary considerably depending on the tissues which as affected. What is an autoimmune disease?... Autoimmune disease occurs when a normal part of the body is attacked by an abnormal immune reaction. The cause of autoimmune conditions is generally unknown. Some diseases, such as lupus, can run in families and certain cases may be triggered by infections or other environmental factors. Regardless of whether or not the cause is know, there is a common thread that is shared by every autoimmune condition: an inflammatory immune response. The treatment of autoimmune diseases vary depending on the type and severity of the condition. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or immunosuppressants may be used to improve to the symptoms. However, this approach doesn't address why the inflammation is present in the first place. Experiencing this yourself? Lets investigate your underlying inflammation. Address the cause.

19.01.2022 HERE ARE MY 8 TIPS FOR GENETIC HEALTH 1. Eat more: - Vegetables: Green and leafy especially. Also include broccoli, brussels sprouts, tomato, beetroot, capsicum, sweet potato, squash and zucchini. - Fruit: All the berries, plums, apricots, papaya, mango, apples and pears.... - Herbs and Spices: Turmeric, ginger, garlic, paprika, cardamom, cinnamon, mint and basil. - Protein: Adequate protein and reduced sugar intake promotes proper liver clearance of toxins from the blood. - Essential fatty acids: Coconut, avocado, olive oil and oily fish. 2. Eat organic wherever possible. Use the dirty dozen and clean 15 fruit and vegetable guide and wash produce thoroughly. 3. Minimise intake of processed, calorie rich and nutrient poor foods as these cause systemic inflammation and interfere with how your genes respond 4. Avoid foods containing trans-fats and high fructose corn syrup. Studies show that food containing high fructose corn syrup promotes specific genes in: - Fat and glucose metabolism - Liver damage and regeneration promoting fatty liver and liver damage 5. Have meat free Mondays'! Incorporate vegetarian proteins such as nuts, seeds, legumes, pulses and consider fermented soy products. 6. Avoid Canned Foods! They are lined with BPA and its well established that BPA disrupts the endocrine system altering hormone production and can adversely affect fertility. 7. Avoid and minimise gluten especially if you are a known celiac but also for intolerant individuals, this is important. 8. Drink clean water. - Install filters on your taps - Store your water in glass bottles and avoid plastic drinking bottles To find out more how you can improve your genetic health, make an appointment for a consultation.

19.01.2022 Stress is the body’s natural way of responding to demands and pressures. In days long gone, it was our defence mechanisms against danger and predators. Our ‘fight or flight’ mechanism, brought on by changes to hormones released by the body, tells us how to respond to the stress. We either confront the danger or escape it. Too much stress or prolonged stress can trigger physical, emotional or mental symptoms e.g muscle tension, mood swings and racing thoughts.

19.01.2022 Negative stress is a feeling of being overwhelmed and unable to cope with demands. These demands can be external (e.g. related to finances, work, relationships) or internal (e.g. illness, or a medical procedure) For example, having a family and running a household can feel stressful and even chaotic at times. Trying to multitask between kids, your spouse and work can add up and leave you feeling overwhelmed and even anxious at times. We can deal with negative stress by incorporating self-management tips and speaking with a healthcare practitioner who can guide as support us.

19.01.2022 Journalling A Gratitude journal my help you refocus your attention on the positive aspects of your day this way, your mind can be retrained to concentrate let on feelings of stressing overwhelm. It's a beneficial new habit for the whole family to start.

19.01.2022 Let's give everyone a HIGH-FIVE today.

19.01.2022 We live in a world of plastic. Plastic cups, bottles, plates and packaging. Our plastic society is putting our eco-system and health at risk. There are some simple steps we can take to change our wasteful habits. It's exciting to see that supermarkets have finally come on board to eliminate some plastic from their stores. This change is a massive step in the right direction for the health of ourselves and our environment.... Unfortunately plastic bags are only part of the picture, plastic packaging is still being used to package fresh, frozen and dry foods. We drink most of our fluids from plastic cups and bottles and our skin care is often delivered in plastic tubes and tubs. Did you know that Australia alone produces almost 3 million tons of plastic per year and of that 130,000 tons will end up in the ocean. Did you also know that most plastics contain a chemical called Bisphenol-A or BPA. This chemical is very detrimental to our health. It is what we call an endocrine disruptor chemical. BPA and many others are part of these chemical, which interfere with any aspect of hormone action. They basically act like hormones in our body and as a result can displace and disrupt our own production of hormones. Most affected is the female hormone oestrogen, this results in contributing to many hormonal issues such as endometriosis, PCOS, infertility and PMT.

18.01.2022 Coping with Stress. Under normal circumstances, your body and mid rely on several mechanisms that help you cope with stress and recover from stressful circumstances. This is called adaption and is a normal and healthy response to stressful events we all encounter from time to time. However when stress is severe, cumulative (caused by multiple issues piling up on top of each other) or present for a long period of time, your ability to cope with or recover from it may be compro...mised. Other factors that may have a negative effect on your ability to cope with and bounce back from stress include: - Being in less than optimal health - Not having strong coping skills and strategies to draw on when you need them - Inappropriate diet and lifestyle habits i.e excess alcohol or caffeine, lack of whole foods and exercise

17.01.2022 Isn't this a rare gift?!?! This amazing organ is your uterus. It is shown here, connected to your ovaries.... Most women are born with this profound spellbinding organ, yet most of us, have never ever seen one : asides from illustration & ultrasound. It is typically about about 7 cm long and 5 cm wide. The uterus works hard, and for a long part of our lives, it is almost always busy performing miracles and healing the womb with its monthly detoxification & equilibrium process. The organ expands more than 100 times its size to house our children, aka the fetus. Each month self-destructing, shedding and re-building its lining, and through this, it eliminates our blood, aka menstruation as it works through a contraction process Moon ( Menstrual ) pain, is therefore pain of the uterus, not ovaries. It can support up to 150 times its own weight. It is the only organ capable of creating another organ > Placenta. It is connected to you. If you get stressed, it gets stressed. If you relax, it relaxes. In that same organ, life is summoned literally. Life is also shared, because there are women who with that organ, gave life to up to 15 children. It is the second heart of a mother, because it is there, she forms the hearts of her children. The Physical body & DNA of her most loved life source. A hub for the soul to connect to this dimension & time space reality. Ladies : Meet Your Uterus Words by Billa Sheehan https://parenttv.com/

14.01.2022 Herbs and Nutrients to Manage Allergies Naturally Allergies, including hayfever, are caused by an immune imbalance. Pharmaceutical medications may help reduce symptoms but do not address the underlying cause, and in some cases, such as nasal sprays, can cause a worsening of congestion when stopped. The following herbs and nutrients may help to manage your symptoms of allergy, as well as supporting your immune system.... - Perilla, albizia, Baikal skullcap and Atractylodes are all herbs used traditionally for hayfever, sinus, congestion, asthma and eczema. - Turmeric, Horseradish and Garlic are also traditional herbs used to reduce inflammation, clear mucous congestion and support the immune system - Nutrients such as Zinc, Vitamin C and bioflavanoids, Quercelin, Vitamin D are essential in any immune issue. 14.01.2022 WHAT IS STRESS? Stress is something that everyone has processed at some point and affects people in many ways and causes different problems for different people. It needs to be pointed out straight away that stress should not always be seen in a negative light. A little stress is good in fact, it’s vital as it is designed to protect us.... Stress acts to motivate and sharpen your focus in situations where immediate action is required. When faced with a dangerous situation your body switches on your acute stress response also known as fight or flight. This gives your body a burst of energy to help you deal with the danger by either running away or fighting back.

14.01.2022 What Is Hayfever? The medical term for hayfever is allergic rhinitis, and it's basically caused by an allergic reaction triggered by pollen, mould, animal dander, dust and other similar inhaled allergens. The symptoms can vary from mild irritation to severe allergy requiring medication. What are the Symptoms?... Once the pollen season starts you may be able to relate to many of these, often debilitating, symptoms. Your nose, roof of mouth and back of the throat and eyes itch, your eyes are watery often associated with sneezing and clear watery discharge. You may have a headache, cough or ever a wheeze, asthma symptoms are often exacerbated. People feel irritable and sometimes even depressed as it makes you feel awful. Your eyes are often red and swollen, your nose is congested and sore, and you constantly feel congested.

14.01.2022 WHAT IS THE ‘STRESS RESPONSE’? With the stress response, the body first reacts by releasing certain hormones such as epinephrine (AKA adrenalin), which helps you respond quickly to a threatening situation. There is an increase in heart and breathing rate as well as an increase of energy.... Another thing the body does is direct blood away from your digestive system and other less important organs and delivers it to your large muscles, heart, lungs and brain. This whole process is to enable us to respond quickly to sudden events and remain mentally alert and physically prepared to meet the challenge. The nature of stress today is not a confrontation with a sabre-toothed tiger or hostile warrior, but rather a host of emotional treats: - Major life changes - Work - Relationship difficulties - Financial problems - Being too busy - Children and family And our bodies react to these stressful events as if we were being attacked or repeated invoked. Prolonged stress or lots of little stressors at once can cause this response to continue. In order to deal with long-term or chronic stress, your body release a hormone called ‘cortisol’. Cortisol allows us to stay in an active, attentive state for a long period of time to deal with the stress at hand this sounds great BUT chronic stress affects every system in your body and long-term or poorly managed stress can have serious health consequences.

14.01.2022 REDUCE STRESS High amounts of chronic stress which can be caused by emotional issues, relationship problems, and holding on to guilt, anger or shame all have an impact on your endocrine, reproductive, digestive and immune systems.

12.01.2022 Sometimes it's time to take a break on the weekend and forget that Monday is coming.

12.01.2022 Brain boosters and Busters How does your diet affect, enhance or inhibit your brain power, moods and stress coping ability? Boosters Have an Avocado they’re a powerhouse of nutrients including the vitamin C, magnesium and good fats that help keep you feeling satisfied... Oily Goodness good fat such as omega three of essential for a healthy mood. Try sardines, almonds, chia or hemp seeds Bring on the Berries The perfect snack, Rich in antioxidants to keep you thinking clearly Go Nuts for Nuts they're packed with the building blocks e.g. food fats, protein and vitamins, that promote a feeling of calm Busters Processed Foods - artificial additives can affect mood and behaviour in both adults and children Fatty and Fried Fast Foods - unhealthy fats can increase feelings of stress due to the cellular damage they cause Caffeine - limit coffee and caffeinated drinks, which can increase feelings of nervousness and racing heart Alcohol - too much can make you feel fatigued, and distress and disrupted sleep

11.01.2022 How to Improve Your Gut Health There are steps you can take to improve your gut health. One of the keys to a healthier gut is increasing the number of beneficial bacteria in it. Here are a few strategies to support a healthy gut:... Limit your refined carb intake: Harmful bacteria thrive on sugar, and excessive sugar intake can harm gut barrier function. Take a probiotic supplement: Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can improve your gut health. Probiotic supplements have been shown to be beneficial for gastrointestinal diseases. Eat fermented foods: Fermented foods, such as plain yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir and kombucha, contain probiotics that can improve gut health. Eat plenty of high-fiber foods: Soluble fiber, which is found in fruits, vegetables and legumes, feed the beneficial bacteria in your gut.

11.01.2022 How excited is this little fella? Do you have a favourite day of the week?

09.01.2022 Increasingly, we are seeing more and more people in the clinic complaining of ‘brain fog’, poor concentration and/or poor memory. One day, you might spend a good 5 minutes looking for an item, frustrated because you put them ‘somewhere safe’, but you can’t for the life of you remember where that haven was. All of us has walked into a room before and forgotten what we needed to do in there. These changes are gradual and it gets to a point where we become reliant on our phones ...to help us remember our appointments (or simply what day of the week it is) and lists so we don’t forget the basics, like milk, when we go shopping. There are a variety of reasons behind why our brain is not as snappy as it once was: Stress is a big one! Lack of sleep, high blood pressure, certain medications, or possible thyroid issues can also contribute to the ‘Dory moments’ everyone can relate to. There are a few natural remedies, which may help improve memory and concentration. HERBS: Sage has had recent studies showing that it can improve memory. Rosemary is another herb that has similar properties and its action have also been shown to improve concentration and memory. In fact, it has been widely regarded as the ‘go-to’ herb for memory performance for years. Ginger helps stimulate peripheral circulation (which sends blood to the extremities), so consuming it in either infusions or salads, etc can give the brain a boost. Another herb that’s notable for improving peripheral circulation is Ginkgo biloba. It’s also rich in vitamins B5, B6 and B12 so not only can it contribute to normal intellectual performance, it also decreases tiredness and fatigue. NUTS: Nuts contain all sorts of goodies such as protein, healthy fats, fibre, natural sterols, antioxidants and many vitamins and minerals. Nuts are also, in general, rich in phosphorus which helps to maintain an active memory. BERRIES Cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, etc strengthen the memory due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant compounds that delay cognitive deterioration caused by aging. EXERCISE: Exercise is great for ‘clearing the head’ as the endorphins released are great for stress relief. It also improves the oxygenation of blood, which gives the brain more juice. Don’t forget (lol!) if you don’t use it, you lose it! Reading, mental exercises, meditation and even talking to yourself, helps keep the mind stimulated and facilitate memory function. Whilst the above are some simple ways of improving memory function, there may also be certain deficiencies or hormonal imbalances that would need to be addressed, so be sure to speak with us as we can help you identify anything uniquely affecting you and your situation.

03.01.2022 VITAMIN A: Influences certain immune cells that play a vital role in fighting off infection. Some food sources include: sweet potato, carrot and dark green leafy vegetables.

02.01.2022 Leaky gut, also known as increased intestinal permeability, is a digestive condition in which bacteria and toxins are able to "leak" through the intestinal wall. Mainstream medical professionals do not recognise leaky gut as a real condition. However, there is quite a bit of scientific evidence that leaky gut does exist and may be associated with multiple health problems.... The human digestive tract is where food is broken down and nutrients are absorbed. The digestive system also plays an important role in protecting your body from harmful substances. The walls of the intestines act as barriers, controlling what enters the bloodstream to be transported to your organs. Small gaps in the intestinal wall called tight junctions allow water and nutrients to pass through, while blocking the passage of harmful substances. Intestinal permeability refers to how easily substances pass through the intestinal wall. When the tight junctions of intestinal walls become loose, the gut becomes more permeable, which may allow bacteria and toxins to pass from the gut into the bloodstream. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as "leaky gut." When the gut is "leaky" and bacteria and toxins enter the bloodstream, it can cause widespread inflammation and possibly trigger a reaction from the immune system.

02.01.2022 ZINC: Essential for the function of immune cells. Some food sources include red meat, poultry, nuts and whole grains.

02.01.2022 Did you know that our genes have a significant influence over our health? In recent years our understanding of the impact of our genes on nutritional metabolism (nutrigenetics) and of diet or foods on gene expression have grown significantly. Our genes have many variations, called single nucleotide polymorphims, a mouth full I know, but they are commonly known as SNP's. These SNP's affect the way we process nutrients or can dictate our specific dietary requirements. Certain S...NP's have also been linked to a variety of potential health issues, which makes prevention even more critical.
