25.01.2022 My eggs were very happy this morning in an alien sort of way

24.01.2022 Naturopaths have always known that gut health is the cornerstone to health. Science is finally catching up. Take care of your gut bacteria and it will take care if you! https://calgaryherald.com//calgary-researchers-zero-in-on-

22.01.2022 FAQ Friday! Continuing on with another question about naturopathic medicine. If you have a question you would like answered, please comment below or send me a message. What kind of education does a naturopath have? Education varies depending on the country. The accredited education for a Naturopathic Doctor in Canada and America is equivalent to that of a medical general practitioner. They are highly educated primary care providers who integrate standard medical diagnostics... with a broad range of natural therapies. This education includes: Prerequisites including 3 years of pre-medical sciences at a University with a cumulative grade point average 3.00 on a four point scale. Prerequisite courses: biology, biochemistry, chemistry, organic chemistry, introductory psychology and humanities. Successful completion of a 4-year-full time program in an accredited school of Naturopathic Medicine that includes more than 4,500 hours of classroom training and 1,500 hours of supervised clinical experience. Passing NPLEX board exams that are written after the 2nd year and 4th year of study. NPLEX is the standard examination used by all licensing jurisdictions for Naturopathic Doctors in North America.

22.01.2022 How important is your gut bacteria? SUPER important! Your immune system is only one thing that it effects. Check out this article about how important your gut bacteria is in relation to your immune system and Covid-19: https://bit.ly/2VLUZP9

21.01.2022 My kids love spaghetti. It is one of the few dinners where everyone is excited and there are never any complaints. To be honest though, I really don’t have time to make my own sauce. Would it be healthier if I made my own? For sure! Will that ever happen? Unlikely! Sometimes we have to make compromises that result in healthier options for everyone. 21.01.2022 Usually we go home to Canada in July which is just when my lemon tree in Australia is ripening. I end up picking them all before I leave and handing them out to friends. But things being what they are this year, we didn't go anywhere. So trying to find the silver lining (if you really want to see it!), I have been baking lots of lemon recipes. 21.01.2022 Let’s make some SMART Goals SMART is an acronym. It stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-Based. This is a great way to set goals for anything, but particularly good for health goals. Specific goals are clear and detailed. You want them to be measurable so that you know when you have reached your goal. Make sure your goals are actually attainable. If you don’t run, you probably won’t be doing a marathon in 6 weeks. Be realistic so that you can... achieve your goals. Once this goal is achieved, we can always set new ones. Make sure your goals are relevant. They need to be important to you, not someone else. And give yourself a time by which you want to achieve your goal. Open ended goals make motivation difficult. When making health goals I want them to have meaning to you. I don’t want you to say you to just say will lose xx kilograms, or xx inches. Losing weight may be needed in order to achieve your goal, but what do you want to do. Give your goal meaning. Some examples could be: In 6 weeks I want to be able to walk up the stairs without getting out of breath. In 6 months I want to be able to run 5km. In 3 months I want to be able to bike ride with my child. In 6 months I want to be able to carry around my new born grandchild. In 3 months I want to wake up happy and full of energy Make your goals something that will make you happy. Something that will change your life. Make yourself 3 health goals following the below structure: In _____________________________________ (time in weeks or months), I will be able to: ___________________________________________________________________________

20.01.2022 We have a big problem with single use plastic. We can all be part of the solution. What do you use for storage? Here are the lunch containers for my 3 children. It makes for a bit of washing but keeps plastic out of landfill and our oceans. Check out my blog article for more information about the harms of plastic and what we can all do to help. https://behealthy.live//we-have-a-problem-with-plastic-an/

19.01.2022 FAQ Fridays! I thought I would start posting some answers about what is naturopathic medicine over the next weeks. If you have some other questions you would like answered, either post here or send me a PM and I will post an answer in coming weeks;) What is Naturopathic Medicine? Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care system that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. The naturopathic philosophy is to stimulate the healing power of the body and treat the underlying cause of disease. Symptoms of disease are seen as warning signals of improper functioning of the body, and unfavourable lifestyle habits. Naturopathic Medicine emphasizes disease as a process rather than as an entity.

16.01.2022 "Eat Food, Mostly Plants, Not Too Much." This is from Michael Pollan's book 'In Defence of Food'. I love this sentence. It just sums up everything about eating healthy in 7 words. Doing this can be far from easy, but I think it takes the confusion away from what we are trying to achieve. https://www.booktopia.com.au/in-defens//9780143114963.html I haven't read his book "Food Rules" yet, but it looks really good too. I'm going to get it and I'll let you know.... https://michaelpollan.com/reviews/how-to-eat/ See more

16.01.2022 There is no bad weather, just bad clothing. This is a common saying in the outdoor world in Canada. I used to say it a lot while working at Mountain Equipment Coop (for Australians, this is like Paddy Pallin on steroids). This came to mind this morning as I looked out the window at the rain. The weather shouldn’t be a barrier to getting outside. I remember visiting relatives in the notoriously rainy Victoria, and asking them what they do in the rain. They replied that ...they put a rain jacket on. They weren’t going to let the weather get in the way of them being outdoors. There are so many advances in outdoor clothing these days. Cold, rain and sun are really no excuse to getting outside. So remember on days like today, there is no bad weather, just bad clothing, and get yourself outside. Your body and mind (and your dog) will appreciate it. Mine did.

15.01.2022 Is there a connection between dairy consumption and nasal secretions? (we're talking snot here people). There is much controversy around dairy and its health benefits versus drawbacks. I’m not going to get into the whole thing today. I just want to talk about nasal congestion and dairy. Many people will try to say that no matter what you should always consume dairy for its calcium content. [ 177 more words ] http://behealthy.live/2020/09/10/dairy-and-snot-connection/

14.01.2022 What do you do for self care? What makes you feel good? I haven't been posting for awhile. Life has seemed so busy and I think I needed some self care. I personally like time alone but also getting outside and getting exercise. This is us on a very wet walk a couple weeks ago. We're never to old for a good puddle jump!

12.01.2022 So the holidays are coming up. How are you feeling? Are you excited? Or are you feeling a bit like this little snowman worried you might melt?

12.01.2022 Healthy Delicious Zucchini Banana Muffins So here it is. This is the recipe that I use to make muffins to sell. These are healthy, delicious, dairy-free, sugar-free and lunchbox friendly. They are super versatile as you can make the base and then add whatever flavourings you want. You can easily make several different muffin types in one batch. In these muffins there is no sugar (unless you add the chocolate chips) no dairy (as long as you use dairy-free chocolate chips) and no nuts. 09.01.2022 Following on from my post about incidental exercise, I finally found an article I was looking for about fidgeting. There have been several studies about fidgeting and the amount of calories it burns. People who fidget tend to be thinner as fidgeting can burn about 350 calories per day. No it doesn't count as exercise or have the benefits associated with moderate intensity exercise, but it does still count and can in fact make a big impact. These studies are what leads to reco...mmendations such as standing desks. https://www.nytimes.com//the-fit-tend-to-fidget-and-biolog

08.01.2022 Did you know that almonds are good for wrinkles? In a study of postmenopausal women, those who were given 20% of their daily calories as almonds had less wrinkle severity and less wrinkle width after a study time of just 16 weeks. Almonds are full of good fats and protein along with vitamins and minerals. They are a great snack, and also good for wrinkles it seems! 05.01.2022 Do you take the stairs at work? There are two different kinds of exercise incidental and planned. Planned is when you go out to just do exercise. When you go for a run, to the gym, for a bike ride, boot camp etc. Incidental exercise is all the exercise that you get through your day-to-day activities: walking to the train, walking to school, walking around the office, running after the kids in the backyard. 05.01.2022 I know everyone knows they should be healthy, but we all have our excuses right? If you ever needed a reason, this is a very important one. Please pass on to your friends and loved ones. Many people are holding out for a vaccine to end this current crisis. But vaccines in general are not as effective with obese people, and if we ever have a vaccine for Covid-19, they predict it will not work very well for them. If there was ever an excuse to get healthy, its now!... https://edition.cnn.com//obesity-covid-vaccine-/index.html

05.01.2022 This is what Naturopaths have been recommending forever. We will all get sick from various bacteria and viruses at some point. Your best defence is a healthy immune system.

05.01.2022 Because I know you love delicious recipes! This one is a big favourite in our house. You can freeze it too, but it never lasts long enough around here with my little people. Enjoy! https://behealthy.live//30/healthy-chocolate-avocado-pudd/

05.01.2022 Another FAQ Friday! This one gets mixed up all the time. What is the difference between naturopathy and homeopathy? Naturopathy encompasses the entire spectrum of natural medicine, of which homeopathy is just one part. Homeopathy is a system which uses extremely small doses of natural substances to stimulate the body's own ability to heal, and thus is based on many of the same principles as naturopathy - treating the cause, treating the whole person, doing no harm, and using the healing power of nature. Homeopathy is part of the foundation of naturopathic medicine, yet it may be taught and practised just by itself and by health care providers who are not naturopaths.

04.01.2022 What is your cheat food? We all have one. Mine is Green & Black's Salted caramel and almonds. I can try to tell myself it is healthy because it has dark chocolate in it but who's kidding who, it isn't. But if I am going to eat it, I tell myself I can't have anything else. I try to limit my sweets to just one in the day. Usually I succeed. Sometimes I don't. But some things are just too tasty.

01.01.2022 Who likes to get dirty? I don't usually, but lately I have been going mountain biking with my son and his friends and I have to say it is pretty fun. There is definitly something about riding straight through a puddle of mud that makes you feel a bit younger and more carefree. Give it a try. Next time it rains jump in the puddle with the kids and see how you feel.
