13.01.2022 Ideas of quantity and magnitude need to be in place before we move into formal place value activities with young students. In fact, it is worth checking out what counting strategies and ideas of magnitude older students have too. How can a child understand a system of tens and know what a hundred looks like with bundling or stacks of 10 if they have limited experiences with counting large collections of loose objects? They can't really! Read today's blog for fun, cheap and effective activities you can do with your students to provide purposeful counting. https://naturalmaths.com.au//counting-and-quantifying-col/

13.01.2022 Ann has been eying up the counters at the local grocery and it has set her thinking. Easter Eggs - a novel form of Assessment! More at https://naturalmaths.com.au//who-really-is-the-best-at-ma/

11.01.2022 In the last three blogs, I unpacked ways of using three days of the week picture books. You may not have access to those particular books but there are others that you could use in similar ways. I have made a list of the ones that I am familiar with - please feel free to add other titles to list and let us know how you use them. As we said in the first blog, we have just finished the software update and new teacher notes for our popular product, Calendars. The software can be... used as described in the teacher notes to support your explicit teaching but can also be used to support any incidental learning opportunities such as those that arise from sharing picture books, so head over now and check out the free Calendar samples. The Calendars software allows you to select any month of 2021 onwards to work with. For example, you can shade all the Sundays with a single click or pick out individual days, either by clicking on them or by highlighting them on your screen. The software can be used to support everyday and incidental situations such as marking birthdays or special events or can be used more formally to introduce the calendar mental routines included with the software. The mental routines offer starter questions that immerse the students in the language associated with calendars and with strategies for using them. The Calendars package supports the teaching of the ACM for Foundation: ACMMG008 and Year 1: ACMMG021 and Year 2: ACMMG041. https://naturalmaths.com.au//days-of-the-week-picture-boo/
