22.01.2022 Over 20 years ago I started facilitating annual tree planting activities for the Tailem Bend Primary School (my old school). For 8 consecutive years we planted thousands of local native seedlings at the Pangarinda Botanic Garden near Wellington, SA. Last month marked the 25th anniversary of the garden. One of the most rewarding local action projects I’ve been involved with. The ABC’s Gardening Australia ran a story on Pangarinda last year, check it out here - https://www.abc....net.au/garden/factsheets/pangarinda/9441066 Tailem Bend Primary School, Pangarinda Botanic Garden, Murray Valley Standard

21.01.2022 Inspirational impressive very informative and professional presentation you should be proud of the results of this project... Some of the feedback Natural State received from the 50 people who attended a Conservation Landholders Tasmania field day in Forth on Saturday 9th March 2019. Natural State was invited to share our knowledge and experience in planning and implementing natural area restoration services, to provide technical advice to landholders, and to demonstrate the results of our hard work at one of our local project sites. Over the past 6 years we’ve been working with local landholders, Rob and Brenda, to deliver a range of conservation and land management services to manage 40 hectares (100 acres) of native forest adjacent to the Forth River. Some of the on ground work has included: * planting over 9,000 seedlings at >95% success rate, * 40 hectares of forest searched annually to manage Montpellier Broom & Gorse; and * annual burn offs to reduce the forest fuel load around infrastructure. It was great to be able to show what can be achieved through good planning, ongoing monitoring, and a lot of hard graft. This project has been completely privately funded and delivered with no assistance from any government funding programs. Rob spoke of his experiences to date from a landholder’s perspective and discussed his goals and objectives for the property into the future. Herb from Habitat Plants described the process of growing quality seedlings in a production nursery. It was a great day. A big thank you to Rob and Brenda, Herb & Sally from Habitat Plants, and the Conservation Landholders Tasmania group for facilitating the field day. Photo: Tasmanian Land Conservancy

15.01.2022 Came across this very rare specimen the other day doing some bush regeneration work near Rocky Cape! On a serious note our work involved protecting a patch of Banksia serrata woodland which is a threatened vegetation community in Tasmania.

15.01.2022 STATEMENT: COVID-19 Safety Plan for Natural State. Together, we can all play our part in preventing the spread of this virus to ensure that our North West Tasmanian community stays safe. Today, I have developed a COVID-19 Safety Plan for Natural State to prevent & reduce the potential risk of spreading the virus through our business operations. This will soon be a requirement for all Tasmanian businesses as directed by WorkSafe TAS. If any of our existing clients, or prospective clients, would like a copy of the Natural State COVID-19 Safety Plan, please contact me directly via www.naturalstate.com.au. Take care everyone, Matt.

13.01.2022 Did you know? Natural State offers threatened flora & fauna surveys and natural values reports as part of the Development Application planning process with your local council? We can advise on how to avoid impacts to threatened vegetation communities or threatened species and provide practical solutions to encourage biodiversity. We live and work in the bush every day and have gained valuable lived experience in managing native forest for wildlife habitat. For instance, la...ndowners in the North & North West of Tasmania please be aware that over the next few months young Spotted-tailed Quolls will be leaving their dens as they become independent. The Spotted-tailed Quoll - Dasyurus maculatus is listed as Rare under the Tasmanian Threatened Species Protection Act 1995 and Vulnerable under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. This time last year we had 4 young quolls living in our wood shed and hanging around our house every day before they gradually ventured further from their den. It’s easy to coexist with these amazing little animals. Check out the video

08.01.2022 For anyone interested in an update on some of the land management work occurring up on the summit of The Nut at Stanley please follow this link to access a recent presentation prepared by Natural State for the Stanley Chamber of Commerce. This brief presentation includes a series of before and after photos since 2014, and shows how we’re managing the weeds on The Nut through encouraging ecological succession of the local tussock grass Poa labillardierei. Our weed management ...plan for The Nut State Reserve will be updated shortly to prioritise actions for continued follow up work over the next 5 years. Parts of the summit are looking better than it has for some time but there’s still a lot more work to do. https://docs.wixstatic.com//d69403_16a2e4e4ef7e4452aa49773 Visit Cradle Coast Circular Head Council Stanley, Tasmania Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service

07.01.2022 Beautiful day up on The Nut at Stanley today hand seeding Poa labillardierei Silver Tussock Grass seed as part of our revegetation trials to restore the muttonbird rookeries, currently very densely covered with the weed Hemlock. Seeding rate around 1Kg / 100m2. Great style little man!

06.01.2022 Please read our Sustainability Report 2018. As part of our commitment to sustainability and environmental management we’ve been tracking our performance to quantify our annual greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) over the past 4 years. We proudly take action to avoid and minimise the lasting effects of climate change on our planet and to reduce the burden on future generations.... The average carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) emissions per person in Australia is around 21 t /yr, our household (3 people) and business GHG emissions for 2018 was 24.05 tonnes CO2-e . Whilst we work at minimising our emissions, Natural State offsets our annual emissions through actively managing 17 hectares of wet sclerophyl forest on our property which sequesters an estimated 14,450 tonnes of (CO2-e) per year. Please note: we do not receive any economic incentive or reward for the ecosystem services this patch of native forest provides to our community. It's time to take action folks so I'd like to put a challenge out to local ENGO's - Landcare Tasmania, Greening Australia; NRM's - NRM South, NRM North, Cradle Coast NRM; Local Councils - and environmental businesses to prepare their own annual Sustainability Reports and make them public also. Let's provide some much needed leadership in this space. Here’s a link to the PDF version of the Sustainability Report: https://docs.wixstatic.com//d69403_7ccda412cb954b6aa66fcbb

06.01.2022 Matt is giving a talk at this workshop next week. If you're out Scottsdale-way - check it out!

04.01.2022 We enjoy delivering workshops to share our vast experience in planning and implementing revegetation, river restoration and bush regeneration projects in TAS, SA & VIC. Here's one we prepared earlier........

01.01.2022 Now is the peak of the seed collection season. So in between writing reports for our highly valued customers I’m out collecting & processing native seed ready for our revegetation projects on the NW coast this winter / spring. Stay safe everyone.
