25.01.2022 The Friends of the A Class/ Nguraren Kalleep Reserve have been at it again doing a fantastic job caring for their bushland. Volunteers weeded out Pittosporum extensively in the reserve. They also started preparing possible habitat trees for a upcoming prescribed burn. The volunteers are a committed group who are making a real difference.
25.01.2022 Great to see Quenda around the urban areas of Margaret River. One of our members had the privilege of sharing her veranda with a Quenda last night and wanted to share. She has noticed its digging holes in her garden from time to time. Learn more about Quenda here - https://www.natureconservation.org.au//Quenda-Our-Ecosyste Visit www.natureconservation.org.au to register for our upcoming Citizen Science Presentation on 8 October when you can learn about the WWF Quenda Count. 24.01.2022 So sweet and love the names! Well done F.A.W.N.A Inc. for all your hard caring for our Western ringtail possums. Looking forwarded to hearing more about the amazing Kaatijinup Biodiversity Park proposal in the future.
22.01.2022 What a special environment for kids to learn from.
22.01.2022 Some weeds are prettier than others, but that doesnt make them any less dangerous. Arum lilies are toxic to our native fauna, chokes native vegetation and threatens the natural beauty and biodiversity of our home. But right across the region, properties like this one are being reclaimed and restored through our Arum Lily Blitz. Were offering free herbicide, contractor subsidies, support, resources and more. Want to get involved or learn more? Register at https://www.natureconservation.org.au//co/arum-lily-blitz/

21.01.2022 Great work by the Friends of Rendall Close Weir this afternoon caring for the river foreshore in cold and wet conditions. The volunteers discussed their ideas and plans then quickly got to work. Large areas were whippersnipped, drains cleared and a huge amount of weeds were pulled out. Further plans are afoot for weeding and planting. Thanks to the volunteers for their hard work in a much loved river foreshore reserve.... Thanks to Tracey and Rick for supervising the working bee and to the Shire of Augusta Margaret River for funding support to our friends of reserve groups through the Environmental Management Fund.

15.01.2022 Have you ever trekked the Cape-to-Cape track? If so, you may have noticed the number of arum lilies increasing, but thanks to people like Jane, thats soon going to change. With support from Nature Conservation through the Arum Lily Blitz, the Friends of the Cape-to-Cape Track mapped the entire length of this 123km trail last year and will be doing control work this year. What a great effort! If places like the Cape-to-Cape track hold a special place in your heart, consider joining the Arum Lily Blitz. Even small patches of local control on your property helps the big pictures and slows the spread of this invasive weed. 15.01.2022 Nature Conservation was saddened to hear about a serious act of environmental vandalism in our local bushland earlier in the week. Over 30 trees have been illegally cut down in bushland on the edge of Margaret River. The Shire has been notified but the bushland is not under their jurisdiction so the vesting State agency has been notified and will be investigating. This type of damage to natural vegetation and habitats is just not ok, especially when our beautiful Nannas for ...Native Forests are fighting hard to protect our remaining native forests. If anyone knows who might be responsible for this illegal act please contact our office on 9757 2202 and we will pass on details to the investigators.
15.01.2022 Did you know feeding native birds can alter natural behaviour and harm their health? It creates an unhealthy dependence on humans and the food is often not suit...ed to their physiology. Additionally, it can draw birds into unsafe areas where they may be predated on. Feeding native birds without a licence is now an offence under the new Biodiversity Conservation Act. Feeding commercially available bird seed can also spread weeds and may be a blend that isnt suitable to native birds. Instead, you can play your part by having native plants and shrubs in your garden, so birds have access to natural food sources. More info on having a bird friendly garden is available at https://perthzoo.wa.gov.au//do-your-p/bird-friendly-garden. Read more about feeding native birds in the winter edition of LANDSCOPE magazine, out now in newsagents and online at shop.dbca.wa.gov.au

13.01.2022 We are hoping arums wont be a common sight in the future with the great work everyone is doing as part of the Arum Lily Blitz. The Italian white snail is another interesting pest. Maybe an Italian feast is in order as suggested here by Earth Sea Star.
11.01.2022 We are a fan of artist Christine Cresswell's amazing water colour paintings of wildflowers. Her work is on show as part of Margaret River Region OPEN STUDIOS. https://www.mrropenstudios.com.au/member/christine-cresswell If you are like us... big fans of native plants and biodiversity, not mono-cultures. And, happen to be a landowner with arum than needs managing. Now is the time to join the ARUM LILY BLITZ. We're offering free herbicide, support, resources and more. Want to get involved or learn more? register at https://www.natureconservation.org.au//co/arum-lily-blitz/
09.01.2022 Adopt a Spot kids go back to Flinders Bay Today Augusta Primary School were delighted to return to their previous planting site at Flinders Bay. They were lucky to have a very special cultural walk with Tamara from the Undalup Association. Tamara shared the deep cultural heritage of the land and inspired students to be carers of country. She explained the kinship network between the plants, animals and people of the land. ... She explained how Aboriginal people have lived for millennia, developing a sophisticated understanding of all of the resources in the area. Tamara also gave students an opportunity to try sword sedge (just like coconut) and the healing benefits of pigface. Children loved the sensory experience and showed a real sense of connection and engagement. Students also examined their native planting from previous years and were pleased to note the high survival rate of plants. However plenty of weeding is required, lots of work and plans for next year. Caring for a special place! Thank you to the Line in the Sand Philanthropic Group for funding Nature Conservations Caring for Coast Program including the Adopt a Spot Schools Program.

Stay tuned for more opportunities for the community to get involved in this exciting initiative. Thanks to Coastswap, Coastwest Grants and the Line in the Sand Philanthopic Group for their generous support for this event.
05.01.2022 Do you know your ringtail from your brushtail? Western ringtail possums can be distinguished from larger brushtail possums by their smaller, rounded ...ears, and tails with shorter fur. Their tail fur lies flat and ends in a white tip and is used for climbing. While, as their name suggests, brushtail possums' tails are bushy, and they have more pointed faces than ringtails. Adult brushtail possums are also generally bigger than ringtail possums (1.3kg compared with 1kg) Jiri Lochman You can read about 'The Tale of Two Tails' possum activity run by Nearer to Nature in #LANDSCOPEmagazine shop.dbca.wa.gov.au
05.01.2022 Amazing commitment from our Margaret River grandmothers. Well done to these passionate conservationalists! https://www.margaretrivermail.com.au//margaret-river-gra/
04.01.2022 Margaret River Primary School Year 6 staff and students were today presented with the prestigious United Nations Association of Australia, WA Branch 2020 Global Goals Challenge Award. The award was in recognition of their amazing teacher-led 2019 'Our Patch' Environmental Education Project where students applied their field based learning of Wooditjup Bilya (Margaret River) catchment to explore several global sustainability goals. Their thought provoking work provides insig...ht into how we can all work together to care for the river, now and into the future. The 2020 Year 6 students are also learning about Wooditjup Bilya and through the schools ongoing commitment are applying their learning to the global sustainability goals. Brilliant Work! Congratulations to the Margaret River Primary School and the teachers and students involved.

02.01.2022 Yesterday a determined group of weed warriors did a huge amount of work in Nguraren Kalleep - the A Class Reserve on the banks of the Margaret River. In a couple of hours the friends of reserve volunteers manually controlled a few hundred Sweet Pittosporum. This is essential bushland management work in an area recognised as vital Western ringtail possum habitat. Thanks to each of the volunteers for persisting on such a warm spring day.... Thanks also to the Shire of Augusta Margaret River for funding support for friends of reserve groups through the Shires Environmental Management Fund.

01.01.2022 There are more than 400 orchid species in WA. The orchid family is the largest plant family, comprising about 10% of all flowering plants. Yet, in the Southwe...st Australian Biodiversity Hotspot, orchids as a group are underrepresented, because there are very few epiphytic orchids here. However, terrestrial orchids are there in abundance. They look stunningly beautiful and some have the most astounding pollination mechanisms. See more
