21.01.2022 Today is a big BIG day in the Nature Hearts household. Today I can officially reveal that I am a published author!!! Nothing like a bit of society lockdown to ignite your passion project. I've been wondering how to do this 'launch' and wanting to get it right, but I'm not sure what right or wrong would be in this situation because my super powers are TEACHING and NATURE. ... So I've joined these forces to create my first series of five books for children who are learning to read. The best part is they are all photographed by me and set in the natural environments of the SUNSHINE COAST. Reading about places they know or experiences they have had is extremely powerful for our young ones learning to read. Head to the website to delve into my passion project! Books are $10.95 each or save $$'s by buying the set of 5 titles for $49.95. www.natureheartseducation.com.au #publishedauthor #natureeducation #naturehearts #sunshinecoast
21.01.2022 Limpets on the move!! I bet you didn’t know that limpets commonly found in rock pools can actually move. What you see here is the tracks of a feeding limpet, they feed on the algae of rocks by using their tongue covered in tiny teeth. Found this morning at Kings Beach, Caloundra ... #kingsbeach #natureeducation #sunshinecoast #rockpools
19.01.2022 School Holidays = Nature Adventure Time If you’re looking for a new location I recommend giving Chambers Island a shot. Beautiful calm waters, sandy shores on the bank of the Maroochy River, mangrove forests, trees to climb, plentiful picnic spots, amenities and a playground. Unstructured time in nature has many health benefits for both adults and kids. It reduces our stress, gets our bodies moving, improves our mental well-being and gives kids an opportunity to manag...e risks and solve problems. We love the Island so much that I had to include A Visit to Chambers Island in our first series of books. Books can be purchased here www.natureheartseducation.com.au/shop Find out more about Chambers Island and our other book locations at our gallery here www.natureheartseducation.com.au/gallery Enjoy the last week of school holidays. 18.01.2022 TOP 5 ACTIVITIES TO MAKE YOUR CHILD A SIGHT WORD MASTER As we gear up for the BTS season (that’s back to school ), I want to take a moment to talk about sight words. Possibly not the most exciting topic but one that will soon be at the forefront of many excited early years parents and students alike. If you are new to the game you might be wondering what sight words even are . They are the most frequent words of the English language. In that last sentence I used 4...Continue reading

16.01.2022 STORY BOOK SUNDAY Featuring one of the greatest stories of survival and adaptation. The one about the bin chicken, tip turkey, picnic pirate or whatever term of endearment you use. I know, I know, not usually considered one of our most elegant or inspiring species, but try to see their story of endurance from a different angle. They have been able to change their behaviour at such a rapid rate that their population has exploded rather than dwindled in the face of habit...at destruction and loss of natural food sources. Physical features that were once perfect for sifting through river beds, like super long beaks and bald heads, are also perfect for diving into rubbish bins. Bin Chicken by Kate and Joel Temple is a story of how a bird that was once sacred became hated by its fellow bird species for its ‘revolting’ behaviour (and smell). But really it’s a story about survival and how the white ibis is actually the ‘Queen of the Rubbish Pile!’ PS If you’re new here, I LOVE a good picture book. They are fun to read and share, provide countless learning opportunities and have the ability to deliver an environmental message in an easily digested format. #storybooksunday #binchicken #misunderstood #naturehearts #naturelearning

07.01.2022 How do you get your kids interested in learning to read? Ever noticed how kids can talk endlessly about something they have already experienced? A day at the beach, theme park, the latest Minecraft upgrade? Learning to read works in a similar way. Reading really comes alive for our young ones when the locations and events in the book relate to their own experiences. They have improved comprehension as they delve into their memory bank and are less likely to become bor...ed and disengaged. Our series of books, written by a practicing primary school teacher, might just be the connection you need. Maybe you've already visited the locations. Maybe you will discover a new location to explore. Either way I can guarantee kids will love learning to read with our books. Give the gift of reading this Christmas. All books are available to purchase online at www.natureheartseducation.com.au/shop
07.01.2022 A majestic strangler fig found in the rainforest of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Such a peaceful looking plant and yet rather feisty! It germinates in the canopy of existing trees then grows its roots around the tree ultimately killing it! You will find this tall fig tree in our new book A Day at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Perfect for beginning readers who love nature. https://www.natureheartseducation.com.au/shop... #marycairncrossscenicreserve #sunshinecoast #visitsunshinecoast #visitsunshinecoasthinterland #naturehearts #natureplay #outdoorclassroom #getkidsreading
06.01.2022 Every day on the water is a good day STAYCATION #3 SUP AT GOLDEN BEACH, CALOUNDRA You just can’t go wrong if you visit Golden Beach. Especially when you meet a mate who has a boat, kayak and SUP! ... I’ve always wanted to try a SUP and the calm waters of Pumicestone Passage at Golden Beach provided a ‘golden’ opportunity to give it a shot. Turns out it’s a lot of fun, but also a lot harder than it looks! There is a reason it’s Miss 10 in the photos . Golden Beach is located just south of the centre of Caloundra with the most popular stretch being the 4km between Bulcock Beach and the Power Boat Club. It is protected by the very narrow northern strip of Bribie Island. Only a few weeks ago the fragility of this sand island was tested as the ocean broke through the narrow dune after wild storms and king tides. Today the ocean was no longer breaking through, but it has left a bit of a mess that nature will fix with time. The area is incredibly important to migratory birds with the Little Tern, Common Tern and White-winged Black Tern all visiting during our summer months after breeding 1000’s of kilometres away in Europe and Asia. So a great day out soaking up the sunshine, loving nature and sinking our feet into the sand. If you don’t have great mates like us you can hire all sorts of boats and water craft from Golden Beach Hire on the Esplanade. #staycation2020 #goldenbeachcaloundra #visitsunshinecoast #SUPfirsttimer

03.01.2022 STAYCATION #5 NOOSA NATIONAL PARK Oops! Nearly forgot to tell you about our final staycation adventure. I blame the rude shift back into routines and time schedules that comes with a return to school! We were incredibly lucky to spend the final days of the holidays in the stunning Noosa region. The Coastal Track in Noosa National Park is an absolute must. Sweeping views, pandanus palms and heaven for surfers. While the whole track is about 10km return, you can choose to tur...n around at any time. This way no one misses out, the first few kilometres are even pram and wheelchair friendly. With the family in tow we got about half way around before turning back to the carpark. Next time I'm determined to walk the entire distance. Who's coming with me? #staycationover #noosanationalpark #greenexercise #kidslegsstoppedworking #lovewhereyoulive #visitsunshinecoast

02.01.2022 SOUND ON Went out to investigate the racket outside. Found a whole family of young green tree frogs taking over my grevillia. My these little ones are LOUD! They have obviously enjoyed the rainfall we had here this afternoon. My very professional home video for your viewing pleasure
02.01.2022 With just over two weeks until the Easter weekend, this is your friendly reminder to support BILBIES not BUNNIES this year. Buy a Pink Lady chocolate bilby from Target, Big W or Myer and part of the profit will be donated to the Save the Bilby Fund (look for the green tag). This fund will always have a special place in my heart. Way back in the early 2000’s I was lucky enough to be involved in the building of a predator proof fence within Currawinya National Park. Enclos...ing 25 square kilometres, the fence keeps feral predators out and a breeding population of bilbies safely in. A project of this scale was at the forefront of endangered species conservation. Today the fund continues to literally save the Greater Bilby from extinction through their breeding and release programs. It’s not just about money. It’s about education and awareness. Let’s raise a generation that thinks about our endangered species first. We protect what we love. Buying a chocolate bilby and sharing the story behind it might just be the conversation starter. Make 2021 the year to start a new Easter tradition. BILBIES NOT BUNNIES! As a bonus, the bilby tastes better than bunny! #sayyestothebilby #saynotothebunny #australianendangeredspecies #easter2021
