25.01.2022 It’s not often we see these lovely wombats!

25.01.2022 Have you noticed lots of mushrooms? Especially after a rainy day? They come is so many different shapes and sizes! When you find some, try looking at them from different angles. Observe them from above, the side and if possible, see what they look like underneath! Use a page in your nature journal to draw all the different views, make notes about things like texture and smell. #NatureArtLab #Nature #Environment #Fungi #Mushrooms #Observation

25.01.2022 Always remember to look after the environment when visiting National Parks, Nature Reserves and Botanic Gardens! We all need to work together to take care of these wonderful places. *Don't pick plants or remove them from the area. ... *Keep to the paths and don't climb on rocks or trees. *Don't bring your pets, they can scare or damage our native fauna and flora. *Don't feed the wildlife, human food isn't good for them and regular feeding can change their instinctive behaviour. *Please take your rubbish away with you. Remembering these simple things means places like this can be enjoyed for years to come! #NatureArtLab #Nature #Environment #SharedSpace #Community #Care

24.01.2022 How amazing is this!

23.01.2022 Amazing whales! #curiousnature

22.01.2022 Today is National Threatened Species Day an important day for us to reflect on all the native species we’ve lost, and shine a spotlight on those that are faci...ng the same fate. As a country with some of the most beautiful and unique native wildlife, it is heartbreaking to know Australia has the worst mammal extinction rate in the world. WWF Australia is aiming to highlight the plight of Australia’s threatened native species and urge the government for stronger federal nature laws to protect our beautiful wildlife. For more information and to learn how you can help, visit http://www.wwf.org.au/

22.01.2022 Ecological Community Spotlight! Yellow Box-Blakely's Red Gum Grassy Woodlands. Did you know that there are habitats that are threatened too? When they are, it puts lots of species of both flora and fauna in danger of becoming threatened or extinct. Protecting habitats like this helps provide a refuge for those species while we try to save them!... www.environment.act.gov.au//yellow-box-blakelys-red-gum-wo Photo: Mulligan's Flat Woodland Sanctuary by M.Tranter #NatureArtLab #Nature #Environment #Art #ThreatenedSpecies #CriticallyEndangered #Habitat

22.01.2022 Have you seen these lovely birds?

22.01.2022 Have you looked at the buildings and sculptures you see when you go for a walk? There's so many great shapes! Can you find a circle, a square and a triangle? Can you draw a picture of some of the shapes you see? #NatureArtLab #Nature #Environment #Art #Sculpture #Shapes #NatureArtLabKids

21.01.2022 Did you know you can make your own Nature Journal from things you might already have around your home? For this one, I used some old wrapping paper for the cover, and a combination of brown paper, note paper and the last page from an old sketch pad. I cut them all to roughly the same size, used a holepunch to make some holes in the middle and an old bit of string to tie them altogether!... I think I might use the cardboard from a cereal box to make a studier cover for my next handmade nature journal. Are you planning to make one this school holidays? We'd love to see yours! #NatureArtLab #Nature #Environment #Art #NatureJournal #KidsActivities

21.01.2022 Observation is a really important skill to practice. There are lots of ways to get better at it but one way is to use your nature journal! At the end of the day, think about something that you noticed that wasn't obvious. Did you see an ant carrying a seed? Smell a flower? Feel the lichen on a park bench? Or maybe you heard a bird call you didn't recognise? Write or draw about it in your journal. The more you get into the habit of doing it, the more you'll be able to o...bserve! https://natureartlab.com.au//curious-creatures-deceptive-a #NatureArtLab #Nature #Environment #Art #Observation #NatureJournal

20.01.2022 Wonderful young artists program last week with Jessica and Julia. We enjoyed the company of a beautiful green tree frog Litoria caerulea, and many lovely observations, drawings and artworks were created.

20.01.2022 Nest hollows are so important - check out who lives here!

19.01.2022 Meet another little frog illustrated by one of our young artists last week - the Madagascan Tomato Frog! The interesting thing about this little frog is it’s round pupils - distinct from other frog species that have vertical, cat-like eyes, or horizontal and heart-shaped eyes. Illustration by Lili R.

15.01.2022 Do you have one of these lovely skinks in your backyard?

13.01.2022 Have you ever used pencils or crayons to create a texture? Try placing a piece of paper on some leaves on the ground or the bark of a tree, then shade over the top and watch the patterns emerge! Make sure you don't use the point of your pencil or crayon as you might put a hole in your paper. I like saving up my nature rubbings to cut up for collages later.... https://natureartlab.com.au/collections/kidsworkshops #NatureArtLab #Nature #Environment #Art #KidsArt #Texture

09.01.2022 It’s World Bee Day! Did you know that there are over 20,000 bee species around the world, and of these about 2,000 in Australia? Bees are vital keystone species that preserve ecosystem health and are essential for pollination and plant diversity. This beautiful illustration by 6 year old Lucy is about the Blue-Banded Bee (Amegilla cingulate) which has beautiful blue bands around its abdomen. This native Australian bee species performs buzz pollination and around 8 % of the world’s plants need buzz pollination to reproduce. Let’s celebrate bees today and create your own pollinator gardens to support more bees.

08.01.2022 Ephemeral. It's a funny word to roll around your mouth! It means something that only lasts for a very short time. Have you ever created a sandcastle? Done a dance? Made something from clay and then squished it up? Those are all forms of ephemeral art! We like arranging fallen leaves into patterns on a path. Made from little things that are nearby and we're careful not to disturb the leaf litter as that's very important habitat. ... You'll never know how long it might last, maybe some other people will see it, maybe a kangaroo will hop over it or maybe the wind will collaborate with you to create a new artwork! https://natureartlab.com.au//kids-nature-adventure-and-gol #NatureArtLab #Nature #Environment #Art #EphemeralArt #NatureArt #NaturePlay

07.01.2022 Here’s a special frog from our 2020 Costa Rica trip!

05.01.2022 Here's another great resource for the Aprasia parapulchella we spotlighted earlier this week!

04.01.2022 Sometimes it's nice to find a spot that makes you happy and then just draw. You might like to draw what you can see around you, something fun you did recently or maybe just fill a page with squiggly doodles. #NatureArtLab #Nature #Environment #Art #PlayIsLearning #JustDraw

03.01.2022 Tomorrow might be a good day to get inspired with an entry into this national science week competition. There are some great prizes to be won!

03.01.2022 Make a butterfly painting by folding a page in half then opening it up again. Put a few splodges of paint in the middle then fold the paper over again. Use your fingers to press the paint between the paper, try and think about the shape of a wing as you do but don't worry if it doesn't come out just right. Open up your page and let the paint dry, when it is get a marker and draw in the body of the butterfly. Then draw in the wings, use the shape the paint made to guide you and help keep your pattern symetrical. What other things can you make with your symetrical paint splodges? #NatureArtLab #Nature #Environment #Art #KidsArt #CreativeKids

01.01.2022 Floating dragons!

01.01.2022 Scat! It's the fancy word for POO! A scat is a great way to tell if an animal has been somewhere and what it has been eating. We found this scat on the Eucalypt Lawn at the Australian National Botanic Gardens. We used a stick (not our hands!) to see what it looked like on the inside. It looks like this animal has been eating the grass, can you figure out which animal might have left this scat behind? #NatureArtLab #Nature #Environment #Art #Kids #Scat #Poo #WhoDidThat
